i am really surprised to see a C-5 landing on Kwajalein. I lived there 2 yrs 8 mos when i was a kid. That runway is just barely a mile long. When I was there, the biggest plane to land was a C-141. I didnt think that would fit...now seeing this!! the C-5 seems to take up the whole airfield
at the Air shows in san antonio texas they have one that flies and one you can walk in and its MONSTROUS! and i learned it uses reverse thrust to stop so quickly and when it uses reverse thrust lighting shoots from the engine to the tarmac!
The AN-225 is nothing more than a novelty -- the Russians only built one!! The C-5 has been flying for 40+ years. And at last check the USAF still have more than 100 C-5s in service today. I'm going to miss the sound of those GE TF-39s!!!
The AN-225 is nothing more than a novelty -- the Russians only built one!! The C-5 has been flying for 40+ years. And at last check the USAF still have more than 100 C-5s in service today.
I think it is funny how the Russians have small penis syndrome. The US builds a giant plane out of necessity. Then several years later the Russians build one bigger, just to show that they can.
My brother used to be the crew chief of this type of plane at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma, i took a tour of it an it is like 3 stories inside an you can fit a couple of AC-130's inside of it. When the plane is not runnig, it sits so low to the ground you cant even crawl under it at all. Cool aircraft
@074377623 Just about every really large airplane has that problem. Still a cool aircraft. Stood inside one when I was a teenager and felt really really tiny.
i'm living approximately 10miles north of EDDS in south germany, sometimes you can see and hear a c5 galaxy and an AN225, it's like a good song to me, not a noise
There are several C-5's stationed in Memphis with the Tennessee Air National Guard and when they come in for a landing and come over the house, you know immediately that its a C-5. That jet noise is so distinct.
Sound as unique as a fingerprint. Heard them land at Pope AFB when I was living on Greuber Road, miles away, at Bragg. To this day I don't even have to look up to know it's a C-5.
CF6-80C2L1F turbofan engine is what lockheed martin chose to put on these things. each one is 27 feet long, weighs 7900 pounds and has an air inlet diameter of 8 feet. they are rated at roughly 43000 pounds of thrust a piece, give or take. i see them take off and land almost twice a day here on the naval base in norfolk virginia
if your at Norfolk you saw the pplane i was on land it was a 767-300 North American airlines because i was taking a visit back to the u.s. because i am stationed at lajes ab
The C-5s are currently equipped with General Electric TF-39s. Once the AMP/RERP mods are done all C-5Bs (and the 2 C's) will have the GE CF6-80. C-5A's will still have the TF-39s.
only a few "test" planes have the C-5M conversion completed...They still fly with TF39's which you can easily distinguish by the "whistle" soudn from the engines. The CF6 is vastly superior thus far to the TF39s...quieter, more fuel efficient, and 22% more thrust than the TF39...my biggest question is...can they stand up to the tempo? Can they run for a long period of time before needing to be swapped out..only time will tell...I am 100% all for it as of now...makes my job easier :-P
I know this chick in the air force that told me they had to put in wires with sensors that would say when the engine fell off becuase these were on autopilot back in the day and they didn't realize when (or where) the engines fell off! HAHA It's true, trust me.
Anchor Chains,Train Horns, and the sound of C5's taking off and landing, are 3 of the best sounds in the world...holy shit i get goose pimples from hearing that every time! any1? any1? any1?
