a lot of the profesional drum techs ive met working as road crew for varius bands use this tool...i beleave it works just fine ... its a good tool to use in a hurry instead of staring at the dial.. another thing...you keep saying fine tunning and stuff... these are tools to get equal tencion... it all depends on wat sound and pitch you tune your heads to...keeping in mind the the resonance head must be tuned as well...
These keys work fine. They are to be used as a reference guide to get your heads close to the tension you are looking for. I also tune by ear and these keys are great to get close to the tension your looking for and then fine tuning, Thus your lugs must be lubricated to get an accurate measurement. Are you that lazy that when you change your heads you cant lubricate your lugs? If your allowing the lugs to form corrosion that just tells me your nit taking care of them.
This shit is fake. Tension rod torque can be used to tell you when you are over tightening a bolt to prevent thread damage, but is not accurate for drum tuning because of the difference in screw tolerances, plating, corrosion, and thread wear. For example, my number 2 rod on my 12" tom requires 1 1/2 turn and to get the same tone as my number 4 rod which i need 2 and a half turns to match the tone. Each drum is different and the only way to accurately measure head tension is with a drum dail.
Do people not know how to tune drums anymore? I can tune my whole kit in 6 minutes. And it sounds great, even in the studio. I don't understand the concept of items like this. Much like I don't understand the idea of taking a pill to lose weight instead of exercising and eating healthy. Watch some Bob Gatzen videos, they're free, and you'll get better results.
Woah, woah, woah.. the evans torque key is $21.49 from guitar center NOT $30.00. Can we agree on that? And besides, I've used this key for about 6 months, there's really nothing hard about it.. once you know you're settings it basically is as easy as this video.
I use a combination of tuning resources, including the TAMA Tension Watch AND the Evans Torque Key. 1st I use the Evans Torque Key to make sure all lugs are torqued the same. I then verify my settings using the TAMA Tension Watch. This way I'll know if there's a problem with lugs or with the head. Finally, I fine tune using a Gibraltar Ratcheting Key, using one "click" at a time on each lug until I obtain the desired pitch. Time consuming compared to just 1 method, but very accurate!!
I just got one of these and I think they're great!!!! I don't understand why a lot of people say they suck, they really are good as long as you keep your lugs well lubricated and don't use ridiculously large key movements.
@tibuflavius Tama has the tension watch, pretty similar to the drum dial wich is a brand of its own and theres a rythm tech torque key and an evans one. probably more of them to.
The video response is interesting because she states that its useless and then proceeds to get a pretty even tune!? Surely this would be a great product to get the head in the right ball park, then check tuning and if necessary tweak by ear?
actually the reason its truly junk is a design flaw where the bearing that releases the handle when you reach the torque its set at can loosen itself from the hole its mounted in cause your key to severly over tighten even at the lowest possible setting. What worse is to fix this you have to essentially break the key further by removing the stopper on the handle so the plastic part will swing free, and then try to grab the small bolt the bearing is mounted in with your fingers and re-tighten it.
couldn't really make a recommendation, i tune everything by ear, the torque key was just nice while it lasted because i could start with all lugs at even tension and tune from there. really in the end the best way to get the best results tuning is to tune by ear and listen for the oscillation between the different lugs, the slower the oscillation the closer they are to the same pitch, and if you have a keyboard handy you can use it to give you the pitch you want to tune the drums to
Great video...but it doesn't explain which settings to use for your toms or snare. I have one but the manual didn't state which settings to use so you're still left on your own.
That's true...but some people have a hard time hearing the right sound or don't know what sound they want while tuning. Giving a setting range would point them in the right direction.
there seem to be a lot of complaints about this product. I bought this item, used it, and have had great success. The whole point of it is to get your ring equal all around. It does what it says. After you click all the way through your lugs, you just have to increase the setting a bit. The numbers do not tell you how many in/lbs you are putting on...it is there for a reference. My hi Tom is a 11(one full rotation around plus one increment of the dial), my low tom is an 8 on the dial.
i never grabbed the metal, only the black, i even made sure i didnt by just over tighenting one lug so tight until i notice the key will pop and so far no pop -.- so i just tuned back down
ofcourse its advertised to work perfectly like it is supposed to, every product is...
and yes colly it works well for getting them around the same. sure your can use a normal drum key to do that but i think this is faster.
oh and just saying, i bought mine for 15 dollars new so im not so mad about it not getting it exact. i can see how paying 30 dollars when you could just buy a normal key and spend a little more time would be annoying :/

the torque key is a great product BUT IT DOES NOT DO YOUR JOB FOR YOU. you have to manually fine tune them before you can say your finished. it works perfect for getting your drums tuned in the same ballpark but you cant expect it to work perfectly.
I have torque key, and sometimes, when you are lost, which bolt did you tune more, and head has crazy sound, you can easily find middle way of tuning with this key; and because of that I bought this torque key
@billiehomes I just got one and it's great. Tuned my snare in 2 minutes. I think it's worth it. I'm super tedious when it comes to tuning snares and setting a pitch. Hey people, keep in mind that this key is not as precise as most of the customers expected! i think it is a good tool for drummers that r developing their tuning skills, to see how good their ear is working. I think most of the people is complaining because they maybe thought it will make all the work, like just use the torque and ull drumset will sound awesome. its better if u first tune with the torque and then fine tune by ear, then look for the ideal pitch. Thats my method and works for me
Boy, they should have included your comment on the package, because as demonstated in this video, it's suppose to be the PERFECT tuning aid on the market.
the key fucking sucks. I bought that thing for like 20 bucks and it was a complete waste of money!!! when you tune your drums go bye pitch and NOT tension. Also if you can sing the pitch and match it then that also is a good method of tuning.
I wanted to stop back by to let everyone know that Evans gave me a refund on my torque key, because NO referance guide or instructions come with the torque key
and Evans Tech Support could NOT explain how to use the torque key with out having a good ear for pitch and tone.
I was ripped off too and I agree with you, the torque key is junk. And for all of those who think the torque key is grand, then you don't know anything about drumming yet.
I too have watched the video response to this video and I agree, the torque key is such a waste of money
hey i bought one of these today and i really am impressed at how well it works my kit sounds fucken awsome. piece of piss to work so i dono y every one complains how hard it is to work
highly recomended if u want your kit to sound awsome
It's not going to be the exact same pitch because it is nearly impossible to tune two bass drums to the same pitch because no two bass drums are alike.
yeah i just got done buying a second bass drum finding out that i could make the new head sound like the old one on my other bass and then relizing i had to buy two decided to not have two bass drums any more i thought i was good at tuning( i use a regular key for now but im really antzy to get my hands on one or these evans tourch keys) but i couldnt get my bass drums to sound aloke enough tio please my ears evan after buying brand new heads so yeah food for thought
another thing you can do with two bass drums (which im gona do) is buy a double pedal for your right one and take out the muffling in your left one for a really hollow sound. Im going to use it for songs like "thunderstruck" by ac/dc
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The pro that told you it can't be done isn't a pro at all. it can be done. Once you make sure the shell and the size are the same, put the same heads on each (both batter and resonating), use the same exact dampening method on each, then use a tension tuner to make sure every lug has the same tension on it while using correct tuning technique.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It is literally impossible to have any two instruments that are exactly the same; that is true, but you can do your best to give them the same timbre so you can hear their true pitch in relation to each other. It is also true that it is hard to give them the same pitch because battery percussion instruments' pitch changes once you hit it, but it is possible to get them virtually perfect, which is all you would need in any setting.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Once a tension tuner is used to get them close in that respect, simple tweaking can bring one's pitch down or up to the other. It really is possible, all it takes is...well, an ear for pitch.
Furthermore, any part of the drum that is manufactured can be inspected and changed easily by the owner as well. You guys are way too closed-minded about the possibilities of drum customization.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The question was if one could get their bass drums tuned the same using this tool. I said they could. Then the topic changed to if it were possible to get two bass drums tuned the same at all. I said it was. That's all.
If you had been following along you would have seen that. Where we are now doesn't really have anything to do with the video or the guy's demo techniques.
Also, to assume I'm "suggestion" that a new drummer do anything to their drums without researching first is absurd.
its a self explanatory tool if u cant figure it out ur retarded. Ive had mine for a week and the first time i used it... it worked fine so i don;t know what everyone is complaining about
i just got one and i love it, i usually tune it freely to find a sound and then find out where each lug is and then remember that number, so i use the key and my ears
i cant get it to get that nice sound that the guy did at the end of the vid......the dial is from 0-1.....from 0 to like 6 doesnt even work.....it doesnt torque from 0-6 dats y when i watch some vids that show the tension for the key its like i cant get the sound and all cuz they askin to dial in to like 5 or sumthin.....so really need help how the hell do i use it???????/
Honestly, don't waste the money on this. The torque on your lugs may end up even but it doesn't necessarily mean the tension on the drumhead will be even. I've tried it and was not impressed. Nothing is better at tuning than a well trained ear and experience. Learn to train your ear and tune. Use google to learn how drums work and get a guideline to tuning. Like drumming itself tuning also takes practice. I'm no pro but the "quick fix" never really worked. It takes time to learn but its worth it
oh very true very true..every lug on my drums are diffrent tensions but then they sound the same..i was all impressed then i saw your comment haha....use a piano to help you out...and also most drums are in 4th steps so the tune "here comes the bride"....we all know...the part "here comes" in that tune is a 4th step to help you tun your drums
heys man you think you could torqe up my car shocks with that me and 3 other guys have it to much in the back so the shocks are worn out. o im sorry for bein rude let me tell you who the people were me solja boy yo daddy and ronald mcdonald dressed as a clown. ps you daddy needs to take some extense. psss thats natural male inhansmnet. we sould call yo daddy confident black bob. enzyte for niggas

There is NO tuning guide for the torque key
and you must be a pro at tuning to get the best sound either way.
It does not tune each lug evenly either,
get a drum dial and measure the differances.
Your best tuning aid is the drum dial. it comes with a tuning guide and you will be better satisfied with the great sound.

The torque key is a piece of useless junk
Pro's don't even recommend it
Don't waste your money, get a drum dial
for best tuning sound

At what stage was the key in the video set?
Sorry for this bad english but i'm german=)
plim1995 2 years ago
You'll have to contact Evans commercial department for that answer.
This video was "stage" in order to sell the torque key.
No one can make the turns this guy demonstrates and get perfect tuning
pilsonrobin 2 years ago
the video response posted above this comment is a more - HONEST - description of the torque key....
before you waste your money like I did, you need to watch the posted video response 1st

This torque key commerical ad is a LIE
Check out the posted response video below this video and you'll see for yourself.
I wasted my money toooo

the key fucking sucks. I bought that thing for like 20 bucks and it was a complete waste of money!!! when you tune your drums go bye pitch and NOT tension. Also if you can sing the pitch and match it then that also is a good method of tuning.

I agree with your comment stefaneisenbeis.........
I thought the response video was the BEST.
The torque key is a waste of money, contact Evans and get a refund like I did

I agree with the posted video response too,
The torque key does NOT tune each lug evenly, and commerical ad content is NOT always TRUE
We wasted our money too

I wanted to stop back by to let everyone know that Evans gave me a refund on my torque key, because NO referance guide or instructions come with the torque key
and Evans Tech Support could NOT explain how to use the torque key with out having a good ear for pitch and tone.
I'm getting the drum dial this tomorrow.

How did you contact evans
I need a refund too
I still can't tune my drums at all
The key is no help to me either

If you are like me and many others and are unhappy with the torque key, may I suggest that you watch the video response posted beneath this video.
This lady makes an Excellant Point about the torque key, plus she suggested that I contact Evans for a full refund, which I have already done.
Best, Tom

Awesome suggestion, Yes the response video does show terrible pitch variations as it did on my drum set too.
I tried the drum dial today and am much happier now

I agree, the torque key is GARBAGE
do NOT waste your money
Oh, please do NOT leave me a bunch of Pissy comments,
If you LOVE the torque key so well, please send me your video of your drum kit sounding as great as this guys' drum does

Oh, be sure and visit Bob Gatzen's site here on youtube
He's an Evans inventor and a drum Pro and he does NOT recomment the torque key at all.
Visit him and ask for yourself

The Evans torque key is a JOKE and a WASTE of Money..........
I just watched the video response to this video and I agree, the torque key is a waste because it sure does not tention my lugs evenly .
If you guys developed an ear for pitch , you'd stop BRAGGING about this piece of Junk.

I was ripped off too and I agree with you, the torque key is junk. And for all of those who think the torque key is grand, then you don't know anything about drumming yet.
I too have watched the video response to this video and I agree, the torque key is such a waste of money

Yea, I agree I wasted my money too
This guy in the video is an Evans Man and a Professional at drum tunning

Yes, assuming you use it correctly.

It's not going to be the exact same pitch because it is nearly impossible to tune two bass drums to the same pitch because no two bass drums are alike.
bryan770 3 years ago
yeah i just got done buying a second bass drum finding out that i could make the new head sound like the old one on my other bass and then relizing i had to buy two decided to not have two bass drums any more i thought i was good at tuning( i use a regular key for now but im really antzy to get my hands on one or these evans tourch keys) but i couldnt get my bass drums to sound aloke enough tio please my ears evan after buying brand new heads so yeah food for thought
zvouun 3 years ago
another thing you can do with two bass drums (which im gona do) is buy a double pedal for your right one and take out the muffling in your left one for a really hollow sound. Im going to use it for songs like "thunderstruck" by ac/dc
bryan770 3 years ago
No 2 drums can EVER be tuned the same, check with any Pro
lynn44bc 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
The pro that told you it can't be done isn't a pro at all. it can be done. Once you make sure the shell and the size are the same, put the same heads on each (both batter and resonating), use the same exact dampening method on each, then use a tension tuner to make sure every lug has the same tension on it while using correct tuning technique.
Synsacrus 2 years ago
What on earth are you talking about dude,
Ask any drum manufacture ! !
No 2 drums are ever made the exact same because the manufacture machine's have a high +/- value and are not percise..
If you can tune 2 drums tuned the same, then you need to develope an ear for pitch.
Sorry dude, but your comments are misleading to other drummers.
Stick to the FACTS !
zombieduh 2 years ago 4

It is literally impossible to have any two instruments that are exactly the same; that is true, but you can do your best to give them the same timbre so you can hear their true pitch in relation to each other. It is also true that it is hard to give them the same pitch because battery percussion instruments' pitch changes once you hit it, but it is possible to get them virtually perfect, which is all you would need in any setting.
Synsacrus 2 years ago
That's NOT what you said in your
1st comment ........
You left a MISLEADING comment to other drummers, Please do NOT do that in the future,
No hard feelings ?
zombieduh 2 years ago 2

Once a tension tuner is used to get them close in that respect, simple tweaking can bring one's pitch down or up to the other. It really is possible, all it takes is...well, an ear for pitch.
Furthermore, any part of the drum that is manufactured can be inspected and changed easily by the owner as well. You guys are way too closed-minded about the possibilities of drum customization.
Synsacrus 2 years ago
What are you talking about now.
Gosh, give it up.... The torque key is garbage, the guy in the video is NOT "tweaking" the demo drum.
He's just making a few simple turns and like magic, his drum sounds awesome.
And what kind of changes are you referring too anyway ?
Are you suggestion that a new drummer ruin their bearing edge by sanding it for a better sound or strip off one of the ply's on the shell
zombieduh 2 years ago 4
This comment has received too many negative votes show
The question was if one could get their bass drums tuned the same using this tool.
Synsacrus 2 years ago
Jezzz, where are you getting your information from ?
Please show us your video of 2 drums being tuned the exact same and stop misleading young drummers with FALSE information.
Just because you say it is so, does NOT make it a Biblical FACT.
No 2 drums are ever made the exact same because the manufacture machine's have a high +/- value and are not percise as you just agreed..

xfatalxxgoodbyex 3 years ago
i cant get it to get that nice sound that the guy did at the end of the vid......the dial is from 0-1.....from 0 to like 6 doesnt even work.....it doesnt torque from 0-6 dats y when i watch some vids that show the tension for the key its like i cant get the sound and all cuz they askin to dial in to like 5 or sumthin.....so really need help how the hell do i use it???????/
leo2372 3 years ago
Honestly, don't waste the money on this. The torque on your lugs may end up even but it doesn't necessarily mean the tension on the drumhead will be even. I've tried it and was not impressed. Nothing is better at tuning than a well trained ear and experience. Learn to train your ear and tune. Use google to learn how drums work and get a guideline to tuning. Like drumming itself tuning also takes practice. I'm no pro but the "quick fix" never really worked. It takes time to learn but its worth it
Jigglifier 3 years ago 3
oh very true very true..every lug on my drums are diffrent tensions but then they sound the same..i was all impressed then i saw your comment haha....use a piano to help you out...and also most drums are in 4th steps so the tune "here comes the bride"....we all know...the part "here comes" in that tune is a 4th step to help you tun your drums
