You can take as many steps as you want in between dribbles and when you touch the ball has nothing to do with it. The only thing that matters is when you terminate your dribble. That requires doing something that precludes you from dribbling again. In this case, that happens only when Kobe grabs the ball with both hands. Yes, it would be traveling if someone ran down the court with the ball in one hand. But that's because he terminated his dribble by carrying the ball.
I think it could be a travel if you consider that he hasn't planted his two feet at the same time when he gathered the ball. If you look closely at the replay, he actually steps his left foot first, then the right, and uses the right as a pivot, which is illegal. But there's no way going at live speed that you can claim he's planted the left foot first...
This is a reverse pivot move going to the left... Kobe usually does this turning back right...
Anybody that knows anything about basketball knows this is a real basketball move and not a travel.... Kobe is the only player I've ever seen (streets and professional) that has ever used the reverse pivot like this
Most players use the double pivot that MJ made popular by a left pump fake, followed by a follow through going left again... most players don't have the balance to go back right
@oneman91: Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin McHale used to do this move. With McHale, it kind of looked accidental, so I don't know if his counts, but Dream definitely did it. Props to Kobe for being such a student of the game.
@badpdx Because Kobe actually got taught footwork and post moves from Hakeem...look it up you should find it and Kobe is a student of the game its actually inspiring
@eshnajizzle its not a travel..even when people do an up and under goin to the right and they bring it back left u have to hop off both feet thats not traveling its called goin up for a jumpshot
@DkilluminatiX1 Did I not say, that it isn't about the near slide on the pivot foot, but about the hop from right to right at the very beginning of the move? In effect, he already had selected the pivot foot and then planted the other foot and used it as a pivot. After that, it's a great move, but he had already travelled at that point.
He 1) dribbles 2) sets his left foot on the court 3) jumps off his left to land again on his left (very small hop, but it left the ground), 4) plants his right foot, 5) uses left to pivot around the right (which doesn't leave the ground).
There's one step too many due to the hop from left to left. It's a great move, and it's hard to avoid lifting the left. But he did lift it, and it should be a travel.
@DkilluminatiX1 No. Before that. Right after he dribbles the ball, he plants his left foot. He lifts it, and plants it again. Then he starts the spin.
He does however lift and hop off, or slide with, his left foot by about one foot immediately after the dribble. That counts as a step, and that makes the travel.
I don't know if you're looking at this through Kobe glasses, or if you're just simply blind...
Yes, he has to lift his left foot to turn AFTER he has planted his right. Nothing wrong with that.
BUT he lifts his left foot and returns it to the ground BEFORE he plants his right foot. That's 2 steps. His right then = 3 steps, his left around the pivot-foot-right = 4steps.
@yamanpaks From my previous reply: "I don't know if you're looking at this through Kobe glasses, or if you're just simply blind...

@eshnajizzle You clearly don't know the game. you an take as many steps as you possibly can in between dribbles. The dribble doesn't stop until the ball is gathered. All the things you mentioned happened under the legality of that one dribble. After he gathered the ball, all he did was pivot. Legal move.
@coolpkb It counts as gathering the ball when his hand returned to the ball, he doesn't have to have it in two hands. And that actually happens before his first step. So try again.
@eshnajizzle LMAO. No, it doesn't count as gathering the ball until he does something that terminates his dribble, meaning he isn't allowed to dribble anymore. That would pretty much be grabbing the ball with both hands (or carrying the ball). The ball coming back up to his hand is not gathering the ball, because he could just dribble again. Learn the game.
@coolpkb Sorry to tell you, but even if you continue on to a second dribble, touching the ball after it bounces sets the amount of steps allowed to be taken after it. You can throw the ball forward, take five steps, touch it, take two steps and it's not a travel. Take a third before initiating a second bounce, and it is. You know why it's like that? Because otherwise players could just keep running with the ball in one hand without travelling. Touching the ball limits the steps allowed after it.
@thug8200 i really hate 12 year old like u. i bet u havent even seen jordan play basketball live!!!! search in "the artistry of michael jordan!!! jordan didn't have the gift!!! HE WAS CUT IN HIS HS VARSITY FOR PETES SAKE!!!! WHAT r u smoking??? while kobe at the age of 18 was already in the nba!!!

DRIBBLE + STEP (RIGHT) + HOP (RIGHT) + PIVOT FOOT (LEFT) = TRAVEL
Not because of the very near slide of the pivot foot, but because of the hop off his right leg to his right leg.

Sorry, talking about the wrong leg here...
He 1) dribbles 2) sets his left foot on the court 3) jumps off his left to land again on his left (very small hop, but it left the ground), 4) plants his right foot, 5) uses left to pivot around the right (which doesn't leave the ground).
