any ideas what an '84, 2 would be worth? it's only a dot-neck and i replaced the white guard with a tan one. i need extra $. i think i paid too much for it in '84, though.
You replaced p-90's with mini humbuckers D: But then im guessing you have so many guitars their's another one with p-90's and you just wanted one with the sound of the mini v.v
You're able to get new ones at Guitar Paradise (in Australia) for around $600-700... (in reply to when he said you might be able to find them on ebay and in used guitar stores)
Seriously, who gets a Firebird with the intention of swapping out the pickups? It's like the people who buy a Gibson LP Custom and swap out the pickups with EMGs!
If you ask me his playing wasnt that bad but I have to agree with a lot of folks here...that guitar was ugly as sin and that Line 6 amp sounded like crap!
@RichardGriffith10 Nah, I don't think that's it. I've had both of these guitars and I think the name came about because people didn't really know which model came first. Know what I mean Richard? It's just a cultural thing. It wasn't anything that Gibson did. For that matter the Explorer is more reversed looking than either of these, but since there's only one body model for those there's no discussion.
@Barnekkid I've got an Epiphone Firebird VII and a few people have asked me if it was a lefty that I'd converted to right handed. I mean, it's profile does look rather a lot like that of an upside down Jazzmaster.
despite the guitar is butchered... it actually looks good... I never liked the reverse look... but with full sized HBs it looks pretty good. ... don't get me wrong though... poor guitar... and I prefer the original reverse body.
okay, Line 6??? SERIOUSLY? you might as well just get yourself a banjo and amplify it through a glass bottle... plus, why modify it? why fix what's not broken...mmmkay?
@52Cheve lets see for one thing if you knew anything it has seymor duncons in it 2 its a vintage guitar and 3 the dude knows how to play guitar so ..................................
@sgogiz1 Listen to a real amp and we'll talk about it. When you own a vintage wonder like this Firebird, it deserves a better amp than a digital line 6 with shitty settings.
That's a set-neck Firebird and it nothing like the Firebird Johnny plays. They stopped making this shitty version because of the imbalance issues and the crappy tone. The one Johnny plays and most others play is a neck-through guitar, is much thicker and is NOT neck heavy at all. This was a shitty Gibson experiment gone wrong. You should find a better (real) one and demo it.
I agree with everything you've said here except that reverse Firebirds are not neck heavy. I own quite a few of them, and they are DEFINITELY neck (actually headstock) heavy. Those big-ass banjo tuners are death for that guitar. They dont work well in the first place (the ratio is too fast & they have straight cut gears giving them a rough feel when tuning). Second the weight and size of them contribute HUGELY to that guitars tendency to have headstock breaks.
@fillmorenyc1 I only played one once and it didn't seem as neck heavy as an SG for example. But it was several years ago. From my understanding there was a company (or still is) that makes similar tuners that have a 40:1 ratio (wow!) and are lighter and fit the Firebird perfectly.
David, one can't really hear the tone of the instrument when it's signal is being overdriven through a Line 6 modeler amp. The amp compression is causing the overdriven sustain. It would be great if you would play it dry through a tube amp, then the natural tone would become apparent. All in all, a very nice demo, thanks.
Just FYI, there is no such thing as a 1961 Firebird. They were introduced in '63. Check your serial number and Firebird history.
I agree, the guitar in the vid is too modded to be called a FB. Once those full size humbuckers went into it, anything resembling "Firebird" went out the window. And that Line 6 he's playing thru sounds like absolute dogs ass .
Calling that thing a '65 Firebird, and playing it thru that piece of shit set to nuclear meltdown is just flat out wrong.
@fillmorenyc1 you are surely wright, i bought it in 1964. at the end of the day, it was a mistake, this guitar is also none as t.he "fretless gibson", because the frets are so small that you do not feel them.
it was my first guitar, (not bad for a first guitar), but i got used to it, the easiest neck on hearth, and then i had to learn to change to other necks, with higher frets. and now i use it with a 11 set of strings, real heavy strings.
@firebird72008 Yes, I know that type of Gibson with the super flat frets!! Les Paul Customs used to be made with those frets too. I like really big, high frets myself. I have 2 reverse body Firebirds right now... a white Firebird V, and a green Firebird III. In my opinion, its the coolest body shape ever on a guitar, but its not for everyone, and tone-wise, its very "in your face"--not soft or compressed at all. Very unforgiving of sloppy playing, but I love 'em though!! :-)
It depends on which way intonation is viewed. If the frets are flat & wide, then they make intonation more difficult, cause the leading edge of the fret is not over the fingerboards fret slot... it is "ahead" of it by half the width of the fret. Conversely, flatter frets pose LESS of an intonation problem when actually playing, cause there is less string bending from finger pressure compared to a taller fret. Frets DO need to have a "peak" for correct intonation, though.
@fillmorenyc1 Believe me I know. I am obsessive about recrowning my frets after they go flat. I probably should just get stainless steel frets so they last longer.
Darth, if you find out who makes those tuners, please let me know!! Two of my Firebirds are Historic reissues, and I would love to retro-fit those tuners as long as it didnt require drilling any holes. As far as stainless frets, I have no experience with them, but players I know DO say that the tone kinda sucks with them. They say that they're excessively bright & lack warmth, but again, I've never heard 'em myself. They supposedly DO last WAAAY longer than nickel/silver frets tho!!
@fillmorenyc1 I did a quick search and just found regular banjo ones. If you are trying for a historically accurate FB, I probably wouldn't screw with the tuners. I don't have any use for historical stuff that works like crap. I'd throw on a set of locking Sperzl tuners in a heartbeat over old Klusons if I had an old Strat because I'm gonna play the thing, not keep it on my wall or sell it. But that's just me.
@fillmorenyc1 Stainless frets won't cool the tone of your guitar any more than a brass nut or a LSR roller nut would. I'd rather stick a warmer pickup in a guitar than struggle with having to refret a guitar every few months, personally. EVH's new Wolfgang is a great guitar and has stainless frets. It is a bright guitar, but his tone has always been upper-mid/treble focused. I like bright, articulate guitars myself. You can always warm the sound by turning down the treble on that amp too.
Most of Line 6 amps sound really awful compared to any other amp. (Yes any and I mean it). Moreover, this guy obviously doesn't know how to set it right. The first few seconds are a pain for the ear.
A guitar like this one deserves to be plugged in a good tube amp, otherwise what a waste.

@Soulshine59 this guy is such a d-bag, but he is right...a lot of the non-reverse actually came with p90's. this one probably did, too...considering the width of the holes when he held up the original pickguard. mini hb's would be about as wide as humbucers, but the holes on this are way wider.
Most redundant demo ever. What's the point of demoing an otherwise great vintage guitar if both the tailpiece AND pickups have been replaced? The pickups were one of the things - other than the shape - that made these guitars so different. If I wanted to hear pentatonic blues and shredding on a low end practice amp, I could have just gone to Guitar Center.
bad review. the guy has showed nothing about the guitar, just some lousy fingerwork and clumsy tapping. also, this beautiful vintage guitar was annihilated.
what kind of mental retard jerk would pull the pick-ups, P-90's, out of an original firebird? this guitar is crap. it is not a light-weight guitar. it is very, very heavy. only the original 1952-1955 les pauls were heavier. whoever pulled the original P-90's out should be SHOT!
so they changed all the equipment, played it through a modeled amp, and played it distorted to shiz. So this review is relevant to..... extactly 1 guitar. thanks but no thanks.
Dude I subscribe to your stuff, but I am getting to edge with the crappy line 6 squashed tone. I've seen you place matchless amps... Why the heck don't you use them for the demos?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Keep on rockin' Johnny! Nice review! As for the whiners here, I think they should go whine someplace else. Whaa! Whaaa! They are probably still learning to tune their guitars. What would they know about tone! Rock on Johnny!!!
@InfidelAntichristian The reverse firebird has a straighthrough neck and the guitar body is glued on each side, but pictures i have seen of the non reverse look like a solid body with a set neck...not sure about this, sorry if i'm wrong, but that's the way they look to me.

it does not look, nor now sounds like a firebird.
even with that amplifieir.
everithyng is different, including the frets.
the Firebird as been made as an answer to the fender telecaster and is able to have super "dry " treble sounds.
the diference are so big, that this is not a firebird for me.

some people do very stupid things to very nice guitars :(
freepoco2 1 year ago 3
I agree, not to mention trying to do it justice out of a fucking line 6.
flyhfist 1 year ago 2
They had mini-humbuckers, not P90s.

dreasden58 2 years ago
Johnny Winter never played the Non-Reverse Firebird,
And your guitar playing really SUCKS!!!
anthonycrystal33 2 years ago
@anthonycrystal33 Johnny Winter didn't use the non-reverse, but Gatemouth did.

toolshedmusicman 2 years ago 11
yeah not bad playing bro but that tone, unplug that piece of history from that pos amp
nds03 2 years ago 8
good god what a horrible tone. watch phill x review firebirds and other guitars on frettedamericana. now thats tone.
whitestripebuzz 2 years ago 8
so they changed all the equipment, played it through a modeled amp, and played it distorted to shiz. So this review is relevant to..... extactly 1 guitar. thanks but no thanks.
chibisven 2 years ago
Why the f* did you plug this beauty in a LINE 6 AMP???????
chichou667 2 years ago 40

sgogiz1 1 year ago
what kind of strings do you use ?which are suitable for the mini hambuckers?
alextzam 2 years ago
What is with this guy??? This is the third "review" of his that I have seen and on each one he has the cheesy maxed out distortion.
Any fool knows that to demonstrate true tone you need to run the guitar clean. What kind of a spaced out reviewer is this??
bennyvega100 2 years ago
Don't they come standard with mini humbuckers? He said p90's
PYROSF 2 years ago
Dude I subscribe to your stuff, but I am getting to edge with the crappy line 6 squashed tone. I've seen you place matchless amps... Why the heck don't you use them for the demos?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
dustinmbox 2 years ago 6
How can you take this guy seriously? A Line 6 amp to demo a vintage Firebird? The hat looks stupid and the tone is vomit-inducing.
SparkyT3D 2 years ago 3
i had an mid 60's Firebird, and yes genius, they have set necks, some were thru later.

Keep on rockin' Johnny! Nice review! As for the whiners here, I think they should go whine someplace else. Whaa! Whaaa! They are probably still learning to tune their guitars. What would they know about tone! Rock on Johnny!!!

OMG. The Firebird is fantastic, but the guy playing is absolutely horrific -- comparable to a distasteful joke.

poopfacethriller 2 years ago 2
Firebird with set neck???
Fail!!!!
InfidelAntichristian 2 years ago
@InfidelAntichristian The reverse firebird has a straighthrough neck and the guitar body is glued on each side, but pictures i have seen of the non reverse look like a solid body with a set neck...not sure about this, sorry if i'm wrong, but that's the way they look to me.
echothecrowman 2 years ago
This guy uses the most tasteless bends in existence.
wepmajoe 2 years ago 3
Were/who do you get/who gives you all the equipment?
Decklann 2 years ago
Kind of looks like a left-handed guitar upside down.
sparkles265 2 years ago 2
dave grohl sucks. Allen Collins was the guy made the firebird famous, and Johnny winter......dave grohl shampoo's my nutsack
