Wow. Really cool to see Rick Laird so young (I only really knew him from Mahavishnu Orchestra Mark I). I enjoy Feldman's conception, and he has a great compositional ear ("Seven Steps" and "Joshua" are two Miles favorites.) Thanks for posting!
victor was a unique player on the WORLD stage a fantastic musican a massive loss to all.i spoke to him briefly over 50yrs ago and he new people from my home town of leeds .what a lovely man .i was just a bop mad kid then but he took time to have a word.always remember that.i followed his career ever since and he went on to be one of the very best many thanks.
Nice! Not sure if I can agree that Feldman was the first Brit to play with an American jazz giant.Peter Ind was in Lennie Tristano's group in the 50's, after all.
i have to say im 68 yrs old and i never fell into Victor Feldman in all this time,,holy shit.of course you immediately have to agree w/ ssg263 on Miles,God bless em all
These white boys can play they asses off! That's why I know that there's no difference between the races. We all have soul and we all have some thing to offer each other. Get down, fellas!
It's coincidental that you mentioned Derek Smith. I recorded with him when I was still a kid in NYC. It was a Jersey session in the mid 1970's for a good Italian singer. Jay Leonardt was on bass, but I do not remember the drummer. Anyway, I love playing Victor Feldman's own compositions.
No wonder some 10 years before he started performing i trio in the US with a 20 years old guy named LaFaro Scott... Rick Laird has a tough role to carry
I prefer this traditional approach to jazz but putting your own stamp on it. This is great stuff! When people say they play their own music that doesn't mean it's automatically as good as anything that's ever been done. I love tradition taken to a high level like this. Victor Feldman was loved by the best musicians in the world and that says it all.
The first Brit to play with a jazz master? I think not! Benny Carter recorded with whole bands of Brits on the 30s, and he wasn't the only one. Then there was Ray Noble's work with people like Bud Freeman, Ronnie Ball with Lee Konitz....
Listening to this style of music, you wouldnt believe that he played on dance track "Hollywood" and rock track "Hard times" by Boz Scaggs in 1977. Both songs charted as singles in various countries around the world.
What a great arrangement. This is as good as any of the great piano trios ever, considering they probeley did'nt play together as much.I love Victor Feldmans playing (with S.Manne & C.Adderley to mention a few)also i think R.Stephenson was one of the busyst british drummers at that time(Drum Spectular & 100/Proof)great albums i love to listen to.Thanks for posting
Terrific video, I have been a fan of Victor's since the "Arrival of Victor Feldman" record. great to see Rick Laird and Ronnie Stephenson too. thank you
Fans of Steely Dan should be very familiar with Victor's playing on just about every album up to the Aja period. He played vibes and piano for them. A highlight is his piano on I've Got the News.
Broadway duchess, darlin if you only knew. Half as much as everybody thinks you do. What I hear may be true, I will still be proud to know you. Yes youre right, his sound is pretty unmistakeable isnt it?
Light touch re Evans. of course {McCoy was a lyrical boxcar--I know that sounds strange but I think most jazz fans will get what I'm attempting to say}.
Along with McCoy Tyner, I felt Evans and he were two of most lyrical jazz pianists ever. I fell in love with Feldman's playing on Cannonball's Riverside recording, "Arriving Soon." Same light, ethereal yet tasty touch.
I started out with Bill Evans and that Riverside album with the gossamer cover of Evans partially obscured by a sheer curtain on what must have been an early saturday sun-lit morning photo shoot.
jee, what a treat, thanks, for more Rick Laird and Humphrey Lyttelton's wit, pls check the videos of Ben Webster and Wes Montgomery respectively on my channel, cheers.
You might think Rick Laird's solo is a bit dull but you try playing anything interesting in A flat at that speed! Nice one Rick! Good to see some footage of the good old days!
I wish he would have stayed on with Miles; I guess he was making more money without him. He brought musical sophistication and great original songs to the Miles group much like Bill Evans did. Wow, to think what could have happened after Seven Steps....
But then again, we wouldn't have gotten the 2nd great Quintet with Herbie, Ron Carter, Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter.
I like Victor on the vibes a lot! I'd have to say that my fave xylophone and vibe player though, is Roy Ayers. :)

Don't anyone knock the bass solo! it's hard enough to play anything in A flat. Stephenson swings like Thigpen all the way!
Totally there, guys!

why a-flat?

Because playing in Ab on the bass, you can't really utilize open strings, except for G.
