@ Fox4dahunt: I agree with you. I think Leon did a great job in the movie. I don't know if David's personality was anything like Leon portrayed but Leon got 2 thumbs up from me for his role.
I must say that regardless of David's mishaps, bad choices or whatever anyone wants to call it. He was TALENTED and it was a tragedy to his family/ friends & his fans when his life ended. I hear some of the things that pppl say about him & it's kind of sad. I do understand & respect every1s opinions but what do we get out of bashing a person who's no longer w/us? Sure he made mistakes but who hasn't.maybe if he was here today, he would wish that he could change those choices however, he's not.
This is sad. How totally SICK of singing this do you think they were by this time? How could they have known that their amazing fame and this iconic song would live forever, but their great voices would deteriorate and their friendships would break apart? Why does this always happen? Is it ego?
David Ruffin was a social retard, which prompted him to behave like a teen-aged girl with a bad case of narcissistic personality disorder, but Otis Williams appears to have been a serious pain in the ass. "His" (obviously limited, he had a "co-writer" help him out... hehehe) biography of the group can be summed-up as such: I was the de facto leader, I never made many personal mistakes, I was the sanest one in the gang, I, I, I and I... Without me, The Temptations would've disappeared."
That's all quite charming, but 0% credible. If he was the supporting force he says he was, he should have let somebody write it about him... Plus, that book and the mini-series it inspired contains NUMEROUS and MASSIVE inaccuracies. Why should we then believe any of that "praise me, Grand Otis" business... Please. Otis Williams is just as much a douche as Ruffin was. Besides, what's with this ghetto tendency to NOT being able to let go of a group after its 9658th lineup change?!! Totally dumb.
Whosoever posted this video have serious focus problems. Don't give up the day job or you will surely starve. By the way do you believe in Ghosts!!! I'm sure David and Eddy have some feedback for you.
Ok after David and Eddie started their own temptation, and Otis and Blu did and then they all reunited....What happend to the guys noone mentioned did Otis go on and have a group with them?
@AuntyWen, Eddie had Lung Cancer, not Throat Cancer. But yea, I do agree with you, Eddie was a talented man who had a passion for singing until the day he died. Poor Eddie, he had to deal with so much in his life especially Lung cancer that is an awful disease to get. I hope when Eddie died, he died peacefully.
@sgelsey They SHould have gotten high on the girl instead of high on Cockan heroin and all that other stuff. then we might have a lot more great music.
@Rthomassc That was David Ruffin who got high on drugs not all the boys and Eddie Kendricks he was on it, but he didn't leave for drug reasons, he left the temptations for reasons dealing with money and financial situations. They did get High on the girl if you know the temptations and what they are known for. We still have great motown artists like marvin Sease, Clarence Carter, Thoeodis, Sam Mosley, Chuck Roberson, Carl Marshall, and many more that still perform at concerts. Learn soul & blues.
@sgelsey I never infered that they wer gay, jut that they got the HIGH from some thing other than "MY GIRL" and that I wish they were still around to make such great music.
David looks really bad in this video, like his eyes are sort of closing. HE let drugs and booze ruin his career. He was a briliiant talent, but his ego got in the way of lots of their success.
I think after Eddie and Paul left maybe you can call them that, because you can't discount Dennis Edwards. The Tempts were still having monster hits including their biggest selling love song in Just My Imagination
@tuzwol You are so right.....with the inclusion of dennis came "i can't get next to you", "cloud nine", "papa was a rolling stone" and etc. Although "just my imagination" came out before dennis and while david was still in the group"
dang if lamont died at 83 then how old is otis like 110 or something? that is a blessing to live for so long but everyone that he loved is gone now. sad.
@mikmuse6 so your saying eddie, otis, melvin, and paul should of kept david in the group so he could get cleaned? They were still the temptations after david was fired
To no one in particular: David Ruffin had a magnificent voice. It "sends me" now as it did back in the day. It seems that 'the creatives' who suffer do so more intensely. I found that the reason for this is because some people experience emotions to a much stronger degree (due to genes) than do others .. thus they are more prone to drug & alcohol addictions. I won't judge David .. because there, but for a few drops of a brain chemicals, go you or I.
David Ruffin was the focus of this group, he had amazing vocals. He destroyed his career with the Temptations behind arrogance, and drugs, it was really sad. He was such a very good talent. After viewing this video, it is not the same old David. He is gone from this life, no more pain, torment and self destruction from his Cocaine addiction..RIP David.
Otis Williams is still living, he is the last of the original Temptations. The were the best male singing groups.
I always loved Ruff. and still do, but, these later videos just break my heart.. He was so gone at this time..For his sake I am glad he got to go home...No more torment..
Damn. David was fuckin high singing this. He even started singing late when the song first came on. He was a great singer. What a waste of talent(well when he got older, he became a waste of talent).
he wasn't high... what do you mean? Did you even watch the whole show? I have the entire show, and I can tell you he wasn't high... he was a little rusty.. yea.. but not high
He was worse than high. He was a cocaine addict who was managing his "highs." That's a really dangerous phase. He probably seldom felt high because he needed cocaine in his system just to function. It breaks my heart to this day that all 5--Eddie, David, Paul, Otis and Melvin--are gone. Between booze, cigarettes, drugs and prescription drugs (Melvin), they all paid for their time on earth. Never be another group as good as the original Temptations.
Well, Lamont died back in the early 80s, I think like 83 or 84. He died in a construction accident. But I thought I just heard a month ago or so that Otis died. I checked all the websites and they say that Otis is still on the planet, so that's good, but I swear I just heard within the past couple of months that Otis died of heart disease. Guess not though. Otis...if you're dead, do me a favor---rattle the table.
I don't think Whynot Mississippi is the ghetto! Some people need to know the facts before they post comments. And David is not the only person to unfortunately succumb to drugs. People famous and infamous have unfortunately done so, and it is very hard to stand by and watch people you love destroy themselves.
David catapulted The Temptations to #1 but it means nothing since he threw his life away to druigs, and caused his bandmates hardship. And it means nothing that he grew up in the ghetto, so have millions of other people and they have not done drugs.
I may be wrong, but I was under the impression he was raised by a very strict father who was actually a pastor of a church. And that's where he and his brother started singing was in the church. I know the pimp story was referenced in the movie, but I'm pretty sure that was false. Not sure, so I'm not saying you are wrong, I just heard a different story.
Drugs or no drugs, no-one will ever be able to deny that man had a powerful voice .
If we really knew the whole truth about most of our singers /songwriters .doctors/lawyers /judges , you name it , you would be shocked probably . . .drugs do not discriminate and they can take hold of just about anyone .
I will always remember driving in the car with my dad singin along to this song .
you cant jugde david on his drug use he was a victem of misfortune in his early youth i too grew up in the ghetto when david described his life i felt for him.
Yes, but he still is responsible for the choices he made. Many people grow up in the ghetto, and don't fall victim to drugs. He's was a tragic life and I don't judge him, but he did it to himself.
in the late 1968s Eddie Kendricks was uncomfortable with singing the psychedelic style that Whitfield was now crafting , (such as the Grammy winner "Cloud Nine" (1968), "I Can't Get Next to You" (1969), and "Ball of Confusion) for the group as opposed to the"I'll Be in Trouble" (,"The Girl's Alright With Me" "Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)" "Get Ready" Just My Imagination" "You're My Everything He quit in1971
Yes David Ruffin has a son (David Ruffin Jr) I do not know you know snoop dogg's song "gin and juice" but he's singing the hook "rollin down the street smokin' indo sippin on gin and juice"...He also has two daughters
Ruffin's first solo single was a song originally intended for the Temptations, "My Whole World Ended . The single from the album entitled My Whole World Ended was released in 1969 Ruffin continued releasing solo material in1975'"Walk Away From Love", produced by Van McCoy, Ruffin was pronounced dead on June 1, 1991,. The case is considered to be an accidental overdose, although there are some questions surrounding the circumstances Michael Jackson covered some of the expenses of his funeral,
simple fact is that ruffin was definitly the voice of the temps and he and eddie rules supreme. i wish i would have had the oppertunity to hear them in person.
Simple fact is there were alot of very good solo artists in the 60/70's But the Tempts are unique by being a 5 member band with 5 lead singers and David ,Eddie,Paul and Melvin being exeptional singers who all complimented each other.
In late 1991, Kendrick, by now living in his native Birmingham, underwent surgery to have one of his lungs removed in hopes of preventing the spread of the cancer. He continued to tour through the summer of 1992, when he fell ill again and was hospitalized. Kendrick died on October 5, 1992 of lung cancer in Birmingham. Kendrick is survived by his three children Parris Kendrick, Aika Kendrick, and Paul Kendrick. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
Thanks for this info. I love the Temptations, especially Eddie Kendricks,He was smooth as silk.I grew up in the 60's so this in my generation we are talking about. Thanks again.
y it just copy and paste From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Despondent that he had been fired from the group t, Ruffin began turning up at and crashing Temptations' concerts. When the group started to perform aMy Girl" or "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", Ruffin himself would appear on the stage, grab the microphone fromEdwards and steal the show, embarrassing the band but delighting the fans. The Temptations resorted to hiring extra security to prevent Ruffin from attending their shows
I am the kind of fan that knows Eddie, David & Paul were the better singers. It's just like any other group in the world. Everyone remembers the LEAD SINGERS the most. DIANA ROSS, BONO, BEYONCE. Like it or not.
i agree.. cuz if u watch the movie.. david paul, and eddie made the hits Otiz was the 1 who really didnt do much! and melvin was jus had a deep voice! so yeah i think u rite
he should of never did crack crack ruins everthingg and the other one should stop drinking that was no ones fault but h is otis just tried to help the group and he did a great job at elast he was the only n ormal one
Like it or not, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams were part of the BEST of the Temptations. Also, Dennis Edwards. Nobody is going to remember Otis Williams. He is a bit too egotistical himself. Just as much as anyone else.
how can you say that no one will remember otis willams?! what kind of fan are you...Otis Williams is the one who kept the temptations under control and is still doing so.
i know right otis kept those boys minds right when they were together and he couldnt help their drug and alchol abuse as things like that tend to happen when your famous. everyone who loves the temps will remember otis williams.
david ruffin granddaughter got killed in detroit in 06 07 in a drive-by when she was walkin home, that shit was all ova the news when it happen........
yeah i kno... i be in detroit all the time kuz i live like 45 minutes away from there... and the temps still be havin concerts the whole 9 till this day.. but the motown hitsville is a mueseum now
Actually, I would have choosen a more accurate account of the Temptations story especially one that truly depicted the culture of Motown at the time DR "supposedly" beame a problem. Was Ruffin, Florence Ballard, Mary Wells, etc. a problem before or after they began to question Motown about the money? It's ironic that many years after David's expulsion from the group, Otis' Temps eventually left Motown in the hopes of making more money, something that DR was fighting for many years earlier.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this guys a douche im glad hes dead, he came into the band after they formed and took over and fucking took advantage of THEM ALL!! those 4 didnt deserve it, no 1 man is larger than any1 in that group!
So much is attributed to David's drug use..that he didn't get further cause of it etc. What about Jerry Garcia, James Brown Keith Richards, Ray Charles, James Taylor, and the countless other pop, rock and jazz giants that were even worse junkies than David, and still made it huge and had long careers? His ego maniacal and extremely volatile personality ultimately held him back. Those traits contributed to his singing with such passion. One of the greatest soul singers ever IMO. RIP.
Were YOU there when he was supposed to beat these women? Or were you looking at the one-sided tale told in the mini-series. A talent like Ruff's deserves RESPECT,you fuckin piece of dogshit
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Talent? hes a drug addicted loser that beat women. maybe in your world that's talent but not mine. but isn't justice sweet? that worthless piece of shit is pushing up daisy's six feet under. like yourself and the ho that birthed you he's the skum of the earth. respect that you loser.
You hurled black and worthless across your posting like they were one in the same. What's your real issue..the fact that he'd been accused of abuse...his drug abuse or that he was a black man doing all of the above ? Stick to the issue...whatever yours is.
so by your logic, i can go around calling whites crackers, hispanics wetbacks and black n*ggers as long as i have some friends of that race? thats doesnt seem right to me, you?
I love this time in musical history. This is back when music was called "Our Music", not like today.
Today, Everyone says, "it's all good" but it's not true; todays music is split up into groups of stereotypes each one more divisive then the other. i guess I'm old and out of touch but I remember how people were...
If david and eddie were able to hold it together thay could have formed a real temptationS group that could have blew away melivn and otis because they were the true voices
Musicpower84: You know your music history. I see that you enjoy reading and finding out facts. Thanks for the information. I grew up listening to the Temps just as many of the posters on this board. They were one of the best groups to come out of Motown.
The movie is not exactly the whole truth. I have read on websites dedicated to the temps, that Melvin did not die in his mother's kitchen. He died in the hospital. He was not in a wheel chair either. He actually had problems with his digestive system and had to wear a colostomy. So one cannot really rely on a movie to tell all what really went on. David Ruffin was a true soul singer, and like most, his ego grew too big to fit with the group. All of them had their individual talent.
I read in Otis's personal autobiography that Melvin had problems for awhile. But in 1995 when they just finished recording "Life Is But A Dream", Ron saw blood leaking through his socks so he immediately was rushed to the hospital and skin apparently had broken down as a result of his constant anti-inflammatory injections over the years he used to treat his arthritis plus his diabetes made it difficult to heal from the skin breakdown. Suddenly after a few days he had a heart attack. So sad.....
The song was the only one that featured Melvin doing any vocals. The rest of the album had to be completed with Ray Davis who is also a veteran singer, singing bass. I know for a fact the movie had to be fabricated cuz the truth would be a little too graphic. And also people who make movies, even biographical ones, always change things around to make them "more interesting" which is stupid cuz if facts are facts, then shoot, show em! That's just my two cents.
yes thats true his so called friends drove him to the emergency entrance dumped his body out and took off. before that he smoked tewn viles of crack in twenty minutes and had a stroke. he was probably dead on arrival.
"......I relate to David not only as a monster singer, but as someone who never sucked up to the system. He's a rebel. At Motown that meant trouble. But that trouble is what gives his music power. He makes his mark on your mind and engraves his signature on your heart. David is deep." (Marvin Gaye, 1982 on David Ruffin)
David Ruffin did want to go solo... however, one of the reasons was because he had a bad addiction to heroine, and the group would always be on top of him... They chose Dennis Edwards to replace him, because David was missing practices and meetings... He was actually murdered in a drug related incident...By far, he was da most talented.. and yes, every lead singer of a group does get a big head, but the reality is, money talks.. Justin timberlake,Smokey Robinson, Sisqo, and whole bunch of others
Well since we are getting specific, he died of an overdose to Crack Cocaine, not Cocaine.. when u know the difference between the two and get your facts straight, then you could call someone a dummy.. and learn how to spell dummy before you call someone that, because thats an oxymoron.. calling someone a dummy and you not having the ability to spell Dummy... lol.. lol..
@ Fox4dahunt: I agree with you. I think Leon did a great job in the movie. I don't know if David's personality was anything like Leon portrayed but Leon got 2 thumbs up from me for his role.

OrlandoWa 2 years ago 3

He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

y it just copy and paste From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Despondent that he had been fired from the group t, Ruffin began turning up at and crashing Temptations' concerts. When the group started to perform aMy Girl" or "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", Ruffin himself would appear on the stage, grab the microphone fromEdwards and steal the show, embarrassing the band but delighting the fans. The Temptations resorted to hiring extra security to prevent Ruffin from attending their shows

The real David Ruffin was not as fine as "Leon" in the movie.
NanaMozell 3 years ago
Actually, I would have choosen a more accurate account of the Temptations story especially one that truly depicted the culture of Motown at the time DR "supposedly" beame a problem. Was Ruffin, Florence Ballard, Mary Wells, etc. a problem before or after they began to question Motown about the money? It's ironic that many years after David's expulsion from the group, Otis' Temps eventually left Motown in the hopes of making more money, something that DR was fighting for many years earlier.

RIP.

I love this time in musical history. This is back when music was called "Our Music", not like today.
Today, Everyone says, "it's all good" but it's not true; todays music is split up into groups of stereotypes each one more divisive then the other. i guess I'm old and out of touch but I remember how people were...

Musicpower84: You know your music history. I see that you enjoy reading and finding out facts. Thanks for the information. I grew up listening to the Temps just as many of the posters on this board. They were one of the best groups to come out of Motown.
Treaty4 3 years ago 2
The movie is not exactly the whole truth. I have read on websites dedicated to the temps, that Melvin did not die in his mother's kitchen. He died in the hospital. He was not in a wheel chair either. He actually had problems with his digestive system and had to wear a colostomy. So one cannot really rely on a movie to tell all what really went on. David Ruffin was a true soul singer, and like most, his ego grew too big to fit with the group. All of them had their individual talent.
Treaty4 3 years ago 4
I read in Otis's personal autobiography that Melvin had problems for awhile. But in 1995 when they just finished recording "Life Is But A Dream", Ron saw blood leaking through his socks so he immediately was rushed to the hospital and skin apparently had broken down as a result of his constant anti-inflammatory injections over the years he used to treat his arthritis plus his diabetes made it difficult to heal from the skin breakdown. Suddenly after a few days he had a heart attack. So sad.....
musicispower84 3 years ago 3
The song was the only one that featured Melvin doing any vocals. The rest of the album had to be completed with Ray Davis who is also a veteran singer, singing bass. I know for a fact the movie had to be fabricated cuz the truth would be a little too graphic. And also people who make movies, even biographical ones, always change things around to make them "more interesting" which is stupid cuz if facts are facts, then shoot, show em! That's just my two cents.
musicispower84 3 years ago
you know my mom told me that it was a great movie but not 100% factual

"......I relate to David not only as a monster singer, but as someone who never sucked up to the system. He's a rebel. At Motown that meant trouble. But that trouble is what gives his music power. He makes his mark on your mind and engraves his signature on your heart. David is deep." (Marvin Gaye, 1982 on David Ruffin)
temptfan6 3 years ago 3
David Ruffin did want to go solo... however, one of the reasons was because he had a bad addiction to heroine, and the group would always be on top of him... They chose Dennis Edwards to replace him, because David was missing practices and meetings... He was actually murdered in a drug related incident...By far, he was da most talented.. and yes, every lead singer of a group does get a big head, but the reality is, money talks.. Justin timberlake,Smokey Robinson, Sisqo, and whole bunch of others

Well since we are getting specific, he died of an overdose to Crack Cocaine, not Cocaine.. when u know the difference between the two and get your facts straight, then you could call someone a dummy.. and learn how to spell dummy before you call someone that, because thats an oxymoron.. calling someone a dummy and you not having the ability to spell Dummy... lol.. lol..
