  • the actress doing this commerica seems to familiar to me know but did'nt then who is it??

  • @candlelight482 Dena Dietrich. Recently seen as a judge on the TV show 'Philly' with Kim Delaney. Check her out on IMDB and Wikipedia. The voice over is the late Mason Adams who was on the TV show 'Lou Grant' as his confidant and boss, Charlie Hume.

  • @Harvey3rdman Thanks, Looked at her past acting jobs & I now know her I saw her in a episode of The Golden gils

  • Brings back a lot of memories!

  • It's Chiffon, bitch.

  • ♪♪♫ If you think is butter... but is SNOT ♪♪♫

  • Tsunamis, earthquakes, floods. She's even been known to wipe out half the planet with giant asteroids. Someone needs to lock her up!

  • I remember seeing this commercial & "Mister Whiffle" BREAKING HIS OWN RULES, AT SQUEEZING Charmin Tissue & be caught by "Mrs .Logan", as I was starting my 1st grade school-year, in 1971-72.

  • Wow. What memories!!! :-)

  • Margarins is effin GROSS!

  • Who knew that Mother Nature could be such a vindictive bitch?

  • @JeffersonDinedAlone You haven't watched the news in the last 2-3 weeks?

  • This was back in the day when commercials were fun and you enjoyed watching them.

  • she should have done a evil sinister laugh when she made it thunder

  • Margarine, especially back then tasted nothing like butter. Many people were fooled into thinking it was healthier than butter. It was worse.

  • What's ironic is, when we "fooled mother nature" by making margerine, we created a heart attack in a bucket (or stick). She was right, "It's not nice to fool mother nature!" We always pay the price for trying, in the long run.

  • @jenhasken Deep fried margarine sticks in beer batter.

With deep fried peanut butter-fudge Oreos on the side.

  • I referred to this on FB, thanks for letting me share this with the (ignorant) young :n)

  • OMG I remember this commercial from way back when... use to think she looked rather old to be mother nature. All these years later she now looks quite young. Sigh, time flies.

  • from Alabama Missouri Arkansas Mississippi .......FUCK YOU BITCH!

  • The wonderful Dena Dietrich.

  • I just met this woman tonight. she's like in her seventies an she's really energetic

  • @Bobertawesomeful actually she is in her early 80's

  • I just remembered the lyrics word for word after 35 years of not seing this. Whoa weird.

  • It's not nice to 'F**k Mother Nature!

  • This commercial gave me nightmares as an 8 year old. Thanks alot mother nature , you B**ch.

  • @alisadm - the white ones were Cool Whip containers. WIN!

  • DAMN NATURE! YOU SCARY!

  • You ruined Japan Mother nature...this is personal now

  • oh, man did we use this stuff! we had so many of those damn yellow plastic containers with the flowers on them that we couldn't give 'em away, LOL! this was back before cheap rubbermaid, only expensive tupperware, so you saved containers like this for leftovers. i remember having some white ones too, but i don't remember if that was a different variety or something.

  • I think I've used the term 'it's not nice to fool mother nature' in recent times yet I haven't seen this commercial in like 35 years. Some things you just remember.

  • I remember we put a few little twists to this jingle...

"You think it's butter-- but it's not-- it is snot!"

"You think it's butter-- but it ain't-- it is paint!"

"You think it's butter-- but not is it-- ......"

  • Another great blast from the past, I still use that phrase every once in a while:

"Its not nice to fool with mother nature"

    thanks.

  • My friends and I used to sing, "If you think it's butter, but it's snot, it's Chiffon", and thought it was terribly funny.

  • @MrEoin2 You know something? It's STILL funny. I just LOL'ed for real.

  • @MrEoin2 It is terribly funny. To inherit the kingdom of heaven, you must think like a little child. That is from the Bible's Book of Walt Disney.

  • @MrEoin2

My friends and I used to sing that too!

  • WOW - I remember this as if it was shown yesterday!!

  • I love the little raccoon hiding its eyes during the thunderclap, lol.

  • the apathy playlist has some of the wierdest vids that i've ever seen.......

  • yet another commercial song my parents sing...dear god how many of these are there!

  • It's not nice to fuck with Mother Nature, motherfucker!

  • I used to like those commercials.

  • Wow, I sure remember this commercial, having seen it hundreds of times. To this day, I remember the grammar, "If you think it's butter, but it's not" was so incorrect and did not finish the thought.

  • I never knew Mother Nature was so sexy.

  • This is the first thing on TV I can remember being terrified by.

  • I'll fool mother nature any damn time I want to !!!

  • In a dream I had, there was a Chiffon ad with Ernie the Caveman, a caveman with a Southern slur. He whacked everyone who thought of butter, until someone buried him, leaving him to say "Those kids. THey always hated Chiffon." Then he died. Then Kate Voegele sang, "If you think it's butter. But it's not. It's Chiffon."

  • I remeber that comercial as a kid

  • If you think it's butter, but it's snot!

  • Mother nature thank you i have your book The Mother nature prophets. thanks

  • oh yes i heard she was Jean Stapleton before she was Edith Bunker---(her and Carrol o connor made a good team) especially with that squeaky voice

  • mommie dearest LMAOscared me shitless to i was eating at the table back in 1976 looking at this commercial and i didnt stay long when she said its not nice to foll mother nature LMAO

  • I remember this! Does anyone know if they still sell Chiffon? I want to taste it now lol.

  • @pinkyluvluv The Aldi's supermarket chain has Chiffon margarine, but they may not have it at all stores. It is still made, though.

  • I remember this commercial like it was yesterday!

  • She used to scare the shit out of me! "It's not nice to fool mother nature!!!!" Boooom!!!!! Ahhhhhhhh!!! Run....Mother nature is a pissed off bitch!!!!

  • Ha ha ha Classic I love it

  • I do remeber this comericial way back in the early 19 70s when i was little watch this comericial and the lighting and thunder sound effect what scared me oh well i was only kid back then!

  • 0:01

    more like

"so I said, who's been eating MY MAGIC MUSHROOMS???"

  • Mother Nature is seriously PMSing here!

  • They still sell that. That woman used to scare me too 3dartisguy. I thought she was going to come out of the TV and kill me with a bolt of lightening!

  • WHO WS THIS ACTRESS? SHE SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME!

  • @3dartistguy Dena Dietrich. I just saw her on a couple of episodes of The Golden Girls starring as Dorothy's sister, Gloria.

  • Are you sure? Its not nice to fool Mother Nature!

  • she is also in history of the world, part 1 in the roman part. orgy scene.

  • Funny!!!!!!

  • this actress was also playing a nurse on the show EMERGENCY the same time this commercial was being aired

  • @777tyler Her name is Dena Dietrich and yes, she starred on Emergency! for 1 (one) episode.

  • Raccoon facepalm?

  • Ol' Mother Nature is seriously PMSing here!

  • It's odd, I'm not old enough to have seen this commercial, but I remember it all the same.

  • I met Dena Dietrich once.

  • I know you guys Remember this one Also...

  • This is a Classic Commercial from the 70;s

  • I used to use this stuff as jacking lube when I was a teenager.

  • lol .. did you noticed that that actress tasted that butter with her pinky like coke users do in the movies.she must be a pro

  • I remember this one, it must have been popular

  • I used to love that! "It's not nice to fool mother nature!" Hhahah!

  • My father-in-law tells me that all the time. "It's not nice to fool mother nature."

  • @truearizonagirl LOL! Now you know where he got that saying from! :D

  • Can't remember her name but she appeared in the original t.v. Ghostbusters at least once!

  • Was this one of the other Nuns (who could not fly and were not Sally Field) from The Flying Nun?

  • @nozcr Dena Dietrich wasn't in "The Flying Nun."

  • Think I just recognized the guy's voice... Is that Kasey Kasem (American Top 40 Countdown DJ)?

  • @ briscoejr1--The announcer is Mason Adams, who also did the Smucker's "with a name like Smucker's, it's got to be good" voiceover. He was also an actor--Lou Grant's editor or something on that old show.

  • @BrinsonMHarris Apologies and thanks... With the exception of LaFontaine, some of these guys do sound alike...

  • @briscoejr1 Now the problem is that voice-over guys all sound like Don LaFontaine.

  • This is a great commercial. She guest starred on an episode of Emergency! back in the day and a blooper exists using that "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature" line. Hilarious......

  • @PerryFanElite She also appeared in a "Three's Company" episode.

  • GREAT commercial...

  • Mother Nature was pagan? wow.

  • IT'S not NICE .. TO FOOOOL MOTHER NATURE BOOOOOOOM LMAO

  • I remember this commercial vividally! My teacher asked us in class one time, "Whats it not nice to do to mother nature?" I'll never forget that!

  • A really great, funny, and memorable commercial! The other one from that era that I really miss is the 'good 'ol boy' sheriff in the dodge commercials whose tag line was: "Boy, you in a HEAP of trouble!!"

  • @areelmichiganer That was Joe Higgins. Those ads also inspired the ads for Boone's Farm apple wine, and also a country music hit from 1971 called "The Sheriff of Boone County". I don't remember the name of the man who recorded it, but he later joined the cast of "Hee Haw".

  • LMAO ooooooo such sweet memories

  • still love it!

  • The 'Mother Nature' commercials for Chiffon were popular before the religious right takeover of the country. Now you rarely see paganism used as a marketing strategy :(

  • Yeah, that's the reason )%&*%)#(%&

  • Mother Nature, Chuck Wagon dog food, "please don't sqeeze the Charmin", the talking wonder bread on the shelf are just a few commercials I remember from my childhood. Oh yeah and " the quicker picker upper" all fun to watch and ran for years. Only the caveman commercials can compare to those.

  • Great ad, but it (along with Disney movies) had me thinking that raccoons were all cuddly and sweet. HA!!

  • We have several raccoons that live in the small barn behind our house. I "tamed" the younger ones so that they would come and eat the food I put out and get along with our cats and dogs. However, you couldn't pay me enough money to ever even THINK about petting one of them. They are very cute and very, VERY dangerous.

  • I went as Mother Nature for Halloween from this commercial in like 5th or 6th grade. Great costume, great memories - "good times - good times"...thanks for posting!

  • I remember this! I was 9 or 10?

  • i hate all the commercials today thankgoodness for remotes and fastforward. way in the 70s they had good little catchy jingles to go with them, thats why we remmber them so well. heres thumbs up to taking a look back

  • I wonder how much this commercial influenced a future generation of Goddess worshippers?

  • @ysbaddaden2003 hmmmmm never thought of that before. good point!

  • @ysbaddaden2003 Chiffon and Harry Potter - how evil!

  • I remember this one! Very cool!

And incidentally, I wish you self appointed, self-righteous members of the food police would stop using this thread to raise a debate about food quality and just let the rest of us enjoy the humor and creativity of the commercial and the good childhood memories they bring back. THANK YOU!

  • @soulgirl66 amen to that

  • soulgirl66, so true so true this is not about the food its about taking a walk down memorie lane.

  • @soulgirl66 Margarine is bad for you...

  • @tgz1000 It may be bad for you, but it tastes oh so good....and besides, there are spreads these days that are a lot better for you ...gotta spread something on the bread

  • @soulgirl66 exactly.

  • @soulgirl66

This video isn't just of nostalgic value but provides record on the transition of dietary cultures and trends. Diverse discussion is therefore valid.

  • @soulgirl66 This is the internet. You can't control people on what they can and cannot discuss.

  • Times were better than. We had only 3 networks and there was good stuff to watch. Now we have a million and THERE'S CRAP TO WATCH. I think the actress who starred in the commercial played Janet's mother on All My Children.

  • Wow, she really straps one on, doesn't she?

  • So where's Chiffon now, mother nature? biatch

  • youtube comment of the week ...

  • Funny, the lame comments get positive marks, and I'm sidelined

  • to paraphrase: "So who said Youtube was fair, biatch?" : )

  • Too true.

  • It's not nice to fool mother nature... and when I'm pissed off, I'm one hell of a muthah.

  • its not nice to foooollll mother nature BOOOOOOOMMMM HAHAHAHAHAAH THIS COMMERCIAL STILL KILL IT AFTER ALLL THESE YEARS 1978- NOW

  • this commercial was so popular in the 70 decade

  • Mother Nature wants her garden put back the way it was intended.

Help Mother Nature and reap the rewards of her bounty!!

    watch?v=R4QfeaF3MmE

  • That crap came with the warning, 'It isn't nice to fool mother nature' so I guess we can't blame the corporations for pawning off an industrial axle grease as actual food!

  • I am so fortunate I grew up in that era. I feel sorry for the kids of today growing up with the shit they have on tv. Years from now when they are all adults and looking back at the stupid ignorant lame-ass AT&T commercials that make no sense in hell, & all the other garbage they advertise. What a shame.

  • @Frostbyte380 Yeah I wish commercials could go back to being entertaining and creative like they were back then.

  • Yeahhh! This was always playing, back in the good 'ol days...

  • Nice to hear Mason Adams too, (from Lou Grant and the Smuckers commercials)

  • who IS this Mother Nature charactor??? :)

  • You may think it's butter, but it's snot! :-P

  • I remember this very well! I thought it was neat how she did the lightning...as a kid I thought it was real! :p

  • my mom probally remembers this

  • oh God do I feel old, I actually remember this horrible ad! lol

  • Indeed!! Margarine is linked to inflammation and artherosclerosis! It's not nice to f#ck with mother nature---indeed! (Google: THE OILING OF AMERICA, by Dr. Mary Enig)

  • I wish i would have grown up in the 70s just so i could watch this lol i LOVE the 70s!!

  • NICE! Great commercial

  • hahahahahaha mother nature cracks me up i remeber this to back in 1979 its not nice to fool mother nature KABOOOOMMM

  • THIS is advertising at its absolute best. Too bad we can't sic her on the advertisers we've got now.

    KABOOM!!!

  • I took acting lessons from Mom Nature at the Debbie Reynolds Charles Nelson Riley Academy of acting ions ago. What a patient and great teacher, and funnier than s@#t!! Hope she is still around living large.

  • Mother Nature IS in fact living large in West Hollywood CA and is a delightful lady and neighbor

  • I sheesh, I remember these.

  • Comment removed

  • I remember that as a young guy.I enjoy the older commercials.I think they were well done.

  • They certainly were well done. Do you remember the Johnny Smoke commercial?

  • @cadencestaff "Out from the land of the tobacco plant/Rode a tall, lean bloke/Feared by his friends and enemies alike/Known by the name of Johnny Smoke (Johnny Smoooke) (w/ voiceover by James Earl Jones, circa 1965 or 1966)

OK - I know you posted that comment about a year ago, but I just now saw it, Had to know at least one person read it and remembers that PSA.

  • IF you think its butter, its chiffon...

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! LOL!!!

  • mother nature knew about trans-fats even in 1970

  • Lol ! Nice video !

In the episode 5x23 of Charmed, Piper, the Goddess of Earth and of all the elements in that episode said "It's not nice to piss off Mother Nature !" when the Titans attacked her and then she used her powers^^.

I've just found out it came from this commercial...

  • When was the last time you saw Chiffon margarine in your favorite store? The commercial was memorable, but customers forgot to buy Chiffon! For the record, Kraft Foods bought Anderson, Clayton and Co. (makers of Chiffon and Seven Seas salad dressings) in the 1980s and both are off the market now...

  • As a kid, I begged my mom NOT to buy Chiffon because I was scared Mother Nature was gonna get me! LOL

  • If I'm not mistaken, when Kraft bought Anderson Clayton & Co, they retired the Chiffon brand so it wouldn't compete with their own highly successful Parkay brand.

  • "Who made the salad?" "I made the salad; me and Seven Seas..." Geez, these old ads sure stir up alot of gray matter!

  • When you think its butter but its not... you've been fooled!

  • I remember making fun of that commercial when I was a kid, "You may think it's butter but it's snot..."

  • Be watchful on how much stuff is presented at the grocery store and is loaded with this hydrogenated oils, this is a molecule away from being plastic. Country 'Crock' need I say more? It's grease and is ahrd to burn off.

  • Funny! A Jewish Mother Nature! No wonder There so much sand In the Middle East!

  • Boy, does this bring back memories.

  • Kudos to GenXorcist1976 for recognizing her when she played Janet Green's mother on All My Children.

  • I would eat her poridge.

  • Man, Mother Nature sure was a bitch-goddess. Some slimeball TV pitchman puts one over on her and she frightens the poor little raccoon. WTF did HE do wrong?

  • LOL!!!

  • it's not nice to fool mother nature.

  • I remember this from 1969

  • Margarine is poison bawahahahaha

  • Janet Green's mother!!!!

  • Always be positive and helpful, never hinder nor harm any race, color or creed, respect and look after mother nature for in return she will respect and look after you.

  • that was casey kasum, the voice of Shaggy on Scooby Doo

  • No it's not - it's Mason Adams of Smuckers and "Lou Grant" fame.

  • thanks, I'll sleep alot better knowing that

  • When I was little this commercial scared the guts out of me! I was such a wuss.

  • It didn't scare me, but i rember it to this day. some 30+ years later

  • lol I remember a few commercials when I was a kid that were a trip. There was a shake & bake commercial I use to laugh my ass off at

  • It's a humorous image AND a powerful stereotype. It's also a dessert topping and a furniture polish.

  • Jeez lighten up EcoRover. It has nothing to do with women's studies. It's a commercial about margarine. The biggest problem of margarine at the time was its competing with butter hence the commercial. The use of mother nature was to provide humor while keying into natural vs. artificial. BTW, TV series such as Maude, Mary, and Rhoda aired at the same time as the commercial. Look to those for your studies on women not this wonderfully done and memorable commercial.
