Why would any educator encourage kids to listen to rap, if people get into rap because of them then they are going to encounter that absolutely abhorrent and vulgar views that the majority of the music in that genre encourages.

The business community/corporations don't plan to invest or reinvest in America. There will be move to totally dismantle public education in America ... hopefully they don't succeed.

Public education and other services in the US are such crap because they are intentionally underfunded through tax cuts, so as to drain them of resources and make them ineffective. This turns public sentiment against the State and makes people think "Gov't sucks", and then the right-wingers responsible come and say "This can't go on, we need to let in private entrepeneurs", after which they proceed to privatization and deregulation, which allows multi-nationals to make huge profits of our misery

I remember a "fold-in" from Mad Magazine: It displayed the "college hat" but the stupid hat is out of reach for the suckers -- however the "college hat" was transformed into a holy halo if viewed properly.

Then I realized education is the new heavens: The promise of safety, the promise of comfort -- an EMPTY promise that will remain unfulfilled.

Educators, please, please look at the William Glasser Institute and "Quality Schools". Dr. Glasser has had decades of success working with some of the most difficult populations, such as schizophrenics and juvenile delinquents. He focuses on giving students choices about how they learn the desired lessons and in meeting their needs. Schools say it is too expensive to train educators in this, but the benefits far outweigh the cost!!

Our education system boils down to "repeat after me"...if I wanted military indoctrination I would join the services, I have learned more on my own using the internet and Libraries than in public school.

There is a reason why critical thinking, logic, basic common sense and alternate cognitive structures are not taught as basic curriculum in public schools, in fact, the basics of how to learn on ones own and to scrutinize information is wholly lacking.

Look at Khan academy, it is 100% better than public schooling and it is free, and there is always someone you can ask to clarify on the site itself.

They pretend to "empower students" but they are all about empowering themselves & their already grossly-inflated salaries (when one includes their nifty benefits package, even starting teachers make about 100K in CA for 9 mos. of work w/a "degree" that isn't even the equivalent of a private-school high school diploma.

As a pediatric doc, educrats are parents #1 complaint. Time to take them out.

Its very appropriate that you compare this 'education' system to military indoctrination, because it was actually invented in 18th Century Prussia for the purpose of making the masses more obedient. John Taylor Gatto wrote about this. The School Sucks podcast is another good resource.

Any replacement to this system worth a damn will have to include critical thinking in the curriculum. But most importantly, it should be about the student's needs, not the 'needs' of the State.
