I love that line... "if any man says all it well, he lies. Everything is not well, everything is for the best!"

It was in the book, too. It was Voltaire's dig at Rousseau, (a supporter of Leibnitz's "best of all possible world's theory). In defense of Leibnitz, Rousseau wrote Voltaire, saying, "All is well"

This was Voltaire's way of saying, "Rousseau, not only are you an idiot for believing Leibnitz, you are doubly idiotic for getting it wrong."

I love Voltaire. :D

War only unites people for a while then they sadly go back to hating eachother.

@Peadarisback: Voltaire wrote Candide tongue-in-cheek mocking that philosophy, you know. The book was rejecting the philosophy of optimism, and the reader/viewer is supposed to catch on to that pretty quickly.

@ALYSSZ Not that it actually needed it. If you listen to the finale, you can hear Chenoweth, Groves and Allens blasting their mikes out. Allen knocked out what sounded like an A-flat or A, full voice. Don't mess with the opera singers.  ;)

I saw this in Swedish and didn't understand the words (but I got the story, if that makes sense) but hearing and understanding all the lyrics and clever patter adds a whole never dimension! It's great.
