  • what program did you study abroad on?

  • i never think before I speak and I always end up saying something stupid :/

  • I think before I speak but I say stupid stuff. Then when I do something smart everyone gets all suprised. It's SO FUNNY

  • hahahaaa, "I just drew a POO" roflcopter

  • I often find myself saying, "did I just say that"?

  • ahaha the "I just drew a poo" made me laugh

  • I BLURT.

  • HARRY POTTER STORE?! where at?! :O and yes i do think, but it depends what day it is. :D

  • Thinking before speaking would be the wise thing to do.

  • I always think before I speak when it's from the head... Never when it's from the heart.

  • its quite funny that you re studying german,,,, i love english people speaking german! *cough* its stabheuschrecke *cough*

  • @Paulinemoke Sergeant -'Hugo Stiglitz. Heard of him?' -' Everybody in the German Army has heard of Hugo Shhhtigrrrritzzzz'

    .

  • @ertebolle6 Haha, that was quite funny. Even though nothing can match the accent of the germans in "xmen 4". The people in the cinema where looking at me when I just burst out into larfter.

  • if you dont think before you speak, you come across as a comic genius without effort

  • I always think before I speak.

  • lol, there's quite a few international students here - then you list all European ones.

  • @LeClassics

    that's.... still international? o_O

  • @muffinbanana From an European point of view, yes.

  • @LeClassics

No. It's completely objective. :D They are coming from different nations to this nation -> they are international. It doesn't matter where exactly they come from.

  • @muffinbanana I suppose in a literal sense. Call it a more worldly upbringing, but when people speak of international I think of a truly international bunch... not the next door european neighbours, which reminds me of the insular view that most people had decades ago of the world.

  • @LeClassics

I would not call your view more worldly then, because Europe may seem like a small bunch of countries to you, looking from afar, but it is not. And no, we are not all next door neighbours. :D And it is not an insular view, but rather a factual one. There are lots and lots of different peoples here, even though their countries are, of course, not as big as the USA.

  • LOVE your accent!!!

  • This is officially the first time I have evr laughed out loud at a youtube video. Mum I just drew a poo!

  • Stabheuschrecke... I solved your riddle. ^^

  • I say just say it. As Billy Connolly once said 'life's funnier when you've got your trousers down'. I find its about 30% inspired 70% utter drivel when i talk without thinking...

  • Naaah, I don't think it would be beneficial to think before you speak, then where would the brilliant inspiration for your videos come from? :D

  • I'm glad you're having a good time! Keep us updated if you can :)

  • I don't think it's worth the effort thinking before you speak, whenever I try to be careful what I say, I'll manage for about an hour then forget. Maybe your memory is better than mine though.. I hope so.

Your videos are great by the way! :)

  • Your videos are so nice, you just lift my spirits :)

  • I vote blurting! It's too time consuming to worry about how other people will react to what you say. :] Also, it makes it sooooooo much easier to find people like yourself to befriend!

  • I have a super hard working older brother as well and it is daunting.

I over-think before I speak. I think it's good to be natural but don't try to say everything you're thinking straight away. But as soon as you try this you're thinking about it too much. I don't think you can win really. Most people do the same in these situations and even if they don't, plenty of other people do and they understand that.

  • just blurt it out ;)

  • i tend to over-think before i speak which tends to mean being a bit distant and wary when i meet people. People see this as me being shy but all i am trying to do is fathom them out.

Just do whatever comes naturally rather than trying to be something your not. If the people around cant accept that then they aint worth getting to know themselves

  • what was the german word? staubheusprecher?

  • In my experience, the more you think about what you're going to say, the more likely you are to goof it up. Just say what you end up saying, little mistakes are charming.

  • In the wise words of my friend:

"Speaking is much like vomiting, you open your mouth and hope something good comes out"

In retrospect, how anything good could come out of vomiting is beyond me...

  • Impulsive blurting is adorable, lol.

However, when responding to a serious question, pause and think. Or just pause. It looks like you're thinking, which makes you LOOK cleverer.

  • Mum I just drew a poo! XD

  • No, I don't think before I speak... and then when the conversation is over I think of a million intelligent things I could of said.

  • @aleothelion "I could of said"....another failure of the educational system

  • @hellrazor117 SORRY. I COULD HAVE*

  • @aleothelion LoLz the grammar gestapo strikes again...

  • I'm not being myself when I don't think before I speak. Thinking before speaking is a sign of maturity, me thinks.

  • when it's the first time i meet someone i generally try to think before i speak, unless it's a boy, because then there is no possibility of me thinking... but i try. after i know people then i don't think so much. but just so you know i'm also know as that random girl who says crazy thing lol

  • I spent two days thinking before I spoke, I think I said like 5 words the whole time, mainly cause I thought what I was saying was either boring or stupid, so I just say random stuff all the time now, Its kinda like a personality I drag along with me

  • I tend to have a 50/50 split when it comes to thinking about what Im going to say and blurting stuff out depending on the situation.

Blurting out tends to happen when I'm with people I'm comfortable with but it also works to create amusing self criticising situations to break the ice when I'm not sure what to say to people!

Sometimes it works the other way though, I'll start to say something thinking that I've planned it then stop to think about how I'm going to finish for a bit too long!

  • thinking's good i think

  • Haribo!!! i miss them so much.... i blah everything out instantly

  • Oh! Bonn is only around 13 hours from Graz so we're super super close now! I hope you continue to have a fantastic time, the town sounds amazing.

And if you ever feel like talking in German to someone who's not right there, my skype is gwynn255 :)

Generally, I don't think before I speak. But when I feel self-conscious it can happen that I think too much and never end up saying anything at all.

    x

  • Whether you think before you speak or not - the best advice to follow is to always just be yourself :)

BTW. "Mum, I've just drawn a poo!2 - BEST. LINE. EVER lol

  • if fitting in is an issue think before you speak.. if just for now.

  • That's one happy poo!

  • You look brown. Is it sunny there?

  • hi sweetie, thanks for the pics.. looks lovely...

  • absolutely knackering eh? hehe whats the American equivalent to that?

  • @SmytheX

    very exhausting

  • @SmytheX tiring!

  • blaebooei........ dont think before you type!

  • i have this problem where i want to say something clever, or just say something overall because of an awkward silence during a conversation, and i basically end up blurting something out that is completely random or just stupid. it's kind of a big problem with me, because it happens so often, that i pretty much always end up avoiding these types of situations and have trouble making new friends. guess ima loser, but it's part of the reason i started vlogging recently, to show my personality

  • Just speak--it's part of your natural charm :)

Good opening line: Zwei Bier Bitte!

  • when it comes to using a foreign language, i just spit it all out, to show that I know my way around other cultures and stuff. Not just sticking to a pocket dictionary all the time...on the contrary...for me, the best thing to do is to talk talk tak...nevermind if it's not politically correct.

It was when I was studying in Bolton, UK for 4 months last year when the natives were so amazed about me being so confident in English that made me realize that the key is just to act totally naturally.

  • I just remembered that Bonn is the birthplace of Beethoven :O

I would say that not thinking before you speak is fine XD Unless you're in a very serious or dire situation or you're a secret agent.

  • It's good to think before you speak to avoid offence or misunderstandings, especicdally when you don't know people well. Never let it cover up who you are though :)

  • feeling a bit intimidated? it's ok, we all do sometimes. Don't go out of your way to do something you don't feel comfortable to begin with, that's not you. If it were you, you wouldn't be the laurbubble we know. You can do as the romans do in rome, or germans in this case, or you can show them what it means to be laurbubbles, your choice.

  • MUM I JUST DREW A POO

  • I just blurt it out, and do exactly what you did with the Macdonalds . I also quote little bits of song that have something to do with what the person is saying, Without realising I'm doing it. New people don't get it.

  • At the very beginning, did you say "It's been absolutely neckering" or did you say "It's been absolutely nut cream"?

Sorry Laur, I just couldn't understand it at all.

  • @MADDOGmjb 'knackering' It's a british word that means tiring ;)

  • i like to just blurb things out, basically i think it's a more honest representation of my thoughts and i'm never embarrassed of that

  • BLERT IT ALL OUT AT ONCE :D !!

  • I'm really glad that you enjoy the time so far. Honestly, just bubble your thoughts out. This is how you learn things and especially the German language. Hope your voice is getting better soon! Hugs from Hamburg, Germany ;)

  • "mum i drew a poo!" haaha. i tend to just blurt things out.

  • glad you're having a good time! =]

  • if you think before you speak you miss the window of oppurtunity

  • I lack the filter, so I don't really think before I'm speak if I'm on a roll. However, if I don't get to say things right away, I sometimes overthink them and end up spiraling down in a mode of thought where everything I could possibly say is stupid and nobody will ever like me.

I only try to apply my admittedly faulty filter if what I'm about to say might offend or hurt others needlessly.

  • @Magnulus Adding to this, I would say that thinking before you speak doesn't make you less like yourself, considering that very very few people are exactly the same to everyone. We have versions of ourselves for when we're with friends, family, strangers or co-workers. That's just how being part of society is. The WAY we think before we speak is more defining, like "Will this make him like me?" or "Will this offend him?" say different things about you.

That's how I see it anyway.

  • I have no advice, sorry.

I do the same thing, but i maybe thinking before you speak won`t help that much. If you coem across wary or slow than i don`t think that would improve the situation.

    Sorry this wasn`t help.

    get well soon :)

  • I'm really glad you're having a great time!

What you said really made me laugh :D I'm German and I spent one term at a pretty posh English boarding school last year .. and well for me it was kinda like the other way round ("Why is everyone so retarded!?").

But I'm sure you'll be fine!

  • How long do you stay?

  • pissed myself at the haribo

  • I'd rattle the shit out of her.

  • Only halfway through the video (@work) but curly/wavy hair looks cute on you. :)

  • How about a challenge? For one week (or timespan of your choosing) try to think over your words before you let them loose into the world. Consider what you are saying, how you are saying it, and the impact your words may have. At the end of said amount of time, evaluate how you feel. It might help you get to a place where you can moderate yourself lightly, while still retaining your natural spontaneity. Good luck :-)

  • Yea i try to think before i speak although sometimes my brain can just turn off :P

  • I'm from Germany and I'm right now in Ireland and gonna be staying for one semester.

I must say that I rather speak before I think, but everyone knows or hears, that I'm from Germany, so they don't mind, if I say something like: "I've wrote that before, I meant I read it, sorry." So don't mind, the germans are really nice in general. You only need to get used to the culture and habits. I mean I had to get used to their habits here. That's why I'm here for. Even though I miss the bikes.

  • I do think before I speak when I am meeting new people, but it normally leads to people thinking I don't have an opinion, am really quiet and really boring because people all jump on top of each other to get a word in edgeways. I wouldn't recommend it too highly.

  • the german word for stick inside is a "staubputz - what" :D:D:D hahahah

  • I sometimes do think and sometimes I belgh out, so I am very mixed.

  • Hi !!

Actually I'm french and doing an Erasmus in Sheffield so I guess the first weeks we all think before talking because we need to be understood and we have not the same mother tongue as the persons in their country have.

But I guess quickly you'll stop thinkin' before talking :)

    see ya

    Will.

  • think.. quickly ;)

  • I think that if you think over what you're going to say then really your just going to be the person you want others to think you are. I used to do that when I started uni but I realised it was more effort than it was worth.

It's far better to be yourself and appear stupid, than be someone else and be stupid.

  • I say this all the time......

    "Would you like a coffee"....

    Oh yeh if you want"....

    lol

  • juchhu, du bist gut in bonn angekommen :) und manchmal ist es besser nicht zu denken, bevor man was sagt. just say what crosses your mind :D

  • I always say "If you're offering" when asked things;

"Do you want a cup of tea?"

    "Only if you're offering"

"Yep... Ermm. That's why I asked"

    "Oh... Then.. Yes"

  • I'm a combination.

In the mornings I don't think much. But as the day progresses I think more :)

  • lol u still draw pooo?.... but yea thinkk just quickly

  • Blurt out stuff when there's no tact that needs to be had, it comes over more spontaneous. Also, your German will get as good as everyone else's with time and if you're in the same place as the McClever Clan, you're probably secretly a member of it, you just hide it better. =)

  • Be yourself! No one wants you to be some ridiculously chill person you are not. Anyone who does does not truly care about you.

That is what I just blabbed out without thinking as a blab about person myself!

  • do you still draw poos?

I think before i speak usually when i don't it goes wrong.

  • Just be yorself and the rest will fall in to place. You seem to be really smart and charming so I don´t think U have anything to worrie about. Just smile and the rest of the world will smile with you.

  • To impress people then think, but with friends blurting shows who you really are.

  • I always blurt things out and everythings fine :D

    most the time...

  • Thinking before you speak is always the best way but I never do it. I blurt things out and it gets me in trouble or in an awkward situation ALL THE TIME.

  • It was a very nice poo Laura,I would gladly put it on my fridge! =)

  • I tend to think before I speak when meeting new people, but sometimes I wish I would just blurt things out. It's much more funny that way and when you are busy thinking sometimes people think you are not interested in talking to them or are shy.

  • When I came to Germany, I started always having to plan what I'm going to say in German before I say it, because the sentence structure is so messed-up. It becomes a mental habit, and now when I go back to UK on holiday I have real issues with saying everything in coherent English sentences.

When I was in Australia in summer with my German girlfriend, I got so confused one that I ordered, "ein Meat Pie bitte." I knew I'd said it wrong, but I though, 'Meat...Pie...yep that's English...'

  • doesn't matter whether you're talking to someone smart or not, if you're the type of person to just blurt stuff out, just be yourself. =) at least you're always sincere and unless you're talking to someone outright evil, they will appreciate that, even if you come across as confusing ;) ... btw i spent a year abroad myself and trust me, i wish everyone i met was smarter than me!!! consider yourself lucky to be in a stimulating environment and JUST ENJOY!!!!! =) good luck!!!!

  • I blurt out everything I say but I try to do it in an intelligent way

    It works half the time....

"I drew a poo!" cracks me up every time :)

  • I think before I speak, but that usually means I end up answering too late or not saying anything at all.

For instance, this comment alone has taken me over 30 minutes to write. Yep. You couldn't tell, could you?

  • @Minish -- Why yes, it did strike me as likely being the result of a long period of intense labor. Hey, Min, for some reason, or possibly no actual reason at all, I kinda miss your funny videos. But if it took 30 minutes to craft the above comment, maybe that means you've just been working on your new video for the past two years. In any event, cheers, Minish!

  • CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT, that's what I say!

If I'm with friends who know me well, i tend to let down my mental filter.

If I'm with adults or strangers, I watch what I say carefully and deliberately.

  • I think it largely depends on who you're talking to. If it's a friend or family member, I generally just blurt out my thoughts as they come. But, if I'm speaking to someone I don't know well, I am much more careful as to what I say. Of course, I have found that this can bite you in the arse, because some people interpret being reserved and thinking before you speak as unfriendly or aloof.

  • Oh my goodness. You are just so adorable! Keep making your videos, they are so fun to watch!

  • You gave a creepy "I'm possessed" look on the last frame.

  • How's the sausage?

  • I usually just say whats on my mind because I end up sounding like a moron if I think about it too much. People tend to be more impressed with me if I just be natural and say anythin whereas if I try to hard and overthink it, i look like a fool.

  • I vote you just blurt it out, if you were too cautious we'd lose all the little amusing things you say ;) xxxxxxx

  • i blurt things out...though I wish I would think first....

  • Just blurt it out!

You are so disarmingly beautiful you can say anything.

  • I just assume that everybody I ever meet is cleverer than me. It's safer that way.

  • to a certain extent it is being yourself its just when you start to twist things or look for the most favourable response that you are not being yourself. you seem like a very nice person, i'm sure you could get away with blurting things out for the time being. it is also a good means of testing what kind of person you're new acquaintance is!

if the sound worked on my speakers i would be able to give you a bit more advice!

  • i think too much before i speak, so i end up saying nothing.

  • i blurt things out, get in trouble alot for doing that , but hey if your thinking about what your about to say you are being kind of false in my opinion! i

  • i thought the general rule was to think before you speak... it's always a good idea.

  • i try to think before i speak, but it doesn't always work out so neatly. i end up blurting things out anyway.

  • I used to always think before I spoke, but nowadays I've gone a bit lax. It also depends who I'm with, but if I'm hyper or having a dumb moment... look out ,idiocy will come bubbling out of my gabber.

  • I don't think before I speak a lot of the time, and I really should!

  • Mum i just drew a poo!

  • I never think before I speak.

I usually think while I'm speaking so that if I say something really stupid, I only realize it's stupid as I'm saying the last word.

  • Don't change who you are. Nothing wrong with thinking a little, but if you're a blurter, stay blurting :)

  • I'm definitely a blurt it all out and then regret sounding like an idiot kind of person. Everyone laughs at me and then individually comes up later and says, "Yeh I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to sound like an idiot so thanks for that". How annoying, haha. Oh well. When I do come out with something really clever people are extra impressed so that's nice. :) Glad you're having fun :)

  • Speaking without thinking is like shooting without aiming.

  • @Woodpusher14 is that the same as bowling without aiming? Because I always do better when I don't look.

  • i played the snake game here

  • "You name it." --> Mongolian.

  • Not thinking before speaking can make for funny stories, but also give you a reputation as a dense person. Only do it with silly friends who do the same.

  • lovely!

  • I don't really think before I speak. I think it would be best, but I can't really help it.

  • i don't really think too much, although i have the lovely, fortunate talent of becoming incredibly articulate when i'm angry.

  • I'm not sure if your definition of clever and mine are the same...

Regardless - hugely jealous of the whole being in Germany thing. Keep your chin up!

  • I think that it honestly depends on who you are with. When meeting new people I think its best to think before you speak, because you know, first impressions. However, when you are with your friends you should just be yourself. Do not try to be something you aren't. People love you, for you. I know, I know I contradict myself. Hope that this makes sense.

  • Mix of both really. Though speaking before thinking seems to bring silence to the room...

  • Aww it looks lovely. :P x

  • Glad you're having fun!! I've got a year abroad in France to look forward to! ...in 3 years

  • yes and no, the macdonalds story is quite funny but thats just probs a nice part of who you are, but often if you think too much you can just look like a general muppet! personal experience! haha im on my first year at uni and it feels like im in another country! =D

  • ya, its best to think before speaking. sure there are plenty of times where being blunt is the best way but only some of the time that is true.

  • BLURT then you are more yourself... its also more entertaining

  • If Yout think before you speak is that you?

I blert stuff out all the time but this usally makes people laugh so i stick with it cause its who i am :D

That came out alot deeper than i meant to oh well

    good luck :D
