I can honestly say I have not seen anything as funny (and clever) as this for ages, there are literally tears of laughter rolling down my face ! brilliant !
It reminds me of a time I did actually mess up. I was playing Ivan Vasilavich in "The Proposal" by Anton Chekhov, and I ended up calling my would be father-in-law Ivan Vasilavich, "Listen Ivan Vasilavich... I'm Ivan Vasilavich," all while remaining in character... I kind of only got a C on that assignment.
beautiful youtube moment... a sketch about a misperformed sketch that was almost mistakenly "correctly" performed at one moment (around :26) but then corrected (i.e. uncorrected) in the nick of time, so people comment about the mistake of the mistake and other people respond, thinking that the people commenting on the real mistake don't get the joke of the entire sketch, which is that it's one big mistake.
If you look at weavehole's channel you'll see that he's quite clearly a wind-up merchant. He's also listed as 33, so he's either a loser with nothing better to do at his age than to troll on Youtube or, in the unenviable event that he genuinely thinks these two 'taxi drivers' were unintentionally getting this sketch wrong, he is a moron beyond all academic hope.
Either way, his comments and channel are getting far too much attention and should be removed from this video as soon as possible.
@LoafOfPint He is also on the other "hedge" sketch, making the same comments... actually, the comment was clearly just copy and pasted, an incredibly lazy wind-up merchant too.
In an additional point: This sketch = pure genius.
Oh, so this is why you flamed my channel page. Couldn't figure it out.
Seriously, people re-read my comment and bear in mind what Stephen's favoured mode of transport has been for the last few years and also what character Hugh plays in House.
Man, these guys are rubbish they never get it right and then, right at the end it isn't even funny! You can actually hear the audience laughing AT them!
Amazing!!!1! I bet they never got to do another performance live on stage again.
Tsk. I wonder what they do now?
Probably taxi drivers or something I bet or doing a menial job in a hospital annoying their boss I imagine!
actually stephen almost slips at 0:26... (he's not supposed to mention the three types until after hugh asks for the imperial. there are a couple of other versions around for comparison.) but hugh gives him a certain look and the two are so much in sync that he realizes it before it's too late. that said, it is a rather confusing sketch to memorize...
gotta love these guys... f&l always put a smile on my face.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes they ARE comic geniuses but NO they absolutely do get it plainly wrong. (well SF does anyway). Of course I'm not saying it MATTERS or is any less funny .... but....
...... If you people really can't spot it then imagine what else you are missing seeing or getting mislead about in 'the media' etc by being so sure and thinking you 'know' something ..... or that someone else is just confused.
WARNING: *DO* ALWAYS OVER ANALYSE THINGS ALL THE TIME. HA HA HA LOL!
We know, but Stephen very legitimately messes up around 0:28. Look at other versions of the sketch, his pause & confusion, and the rest of the dialogue in the sketch for confirmation.
alright, granted, you might be on to something... this was the first version i saw, so i admit that they apparently got away with it without my noticing. would have been interesting to see their faces properly while stephen pauses.
His mistake was to start to say the next line - which would have made the conversation make logical sense. It's probably hard to say the min the wrong order, hence the near mistake.
Did you think I didn't get the whole point of the joke? - that is funny LOL :)
You're saying he said the start of the next line in this sketch on purpose, but then stopped abrupply and said the correct line - all for some kind of 'in joke 'comic effect?
And he did this in this version of the sketch only and left the sketch as written in all pther versions available to watch on youtube?
Wow, you're right, Stephen Fry did make a mistake! Then Hugh Laurie glares at him, gets a little nervous (he has a tell, it's the licking his lips thing), and Stephen Fry makes a funny face, sticking his tongue out to the left. Haha, they did an amazing job fixing the mistake though. That is a confusing sketch!
Would you mind explaining to me the meaning of the end of the sketch? Every time I watch it, I don't really understand... What's with the awkward silence?
HL's FIRST line is a sort of like a punch line in itself anyway. And then with all the lines mixed up and starting again it's like they are getting a 'normal' sketch wrong.
So the funniest thing would be that when they FINALLY get the sketch 'right' after trying SO hard it turns out to have no punch line at all and NOT actually be funny.
That in itself IS funny :)
Spike Milligan/ Monty Python started this kind of comedy.
no buddy, those "tells" are part of the sketch... they are supposed to get it wrong. (the part where stephen almost makes an unintended mistake is at about 0:30 when he almost lists the three types of hedge before hugh asks for the imperial... which WOULD make sense, but the whole point is that their lines don't match up. watch the other two versions for comparison, the dialogue is exactly the same. the actual tell, if any, is the pause that stephen makes at 0:30 before rephrasing.)
Performing this sketch must have been so hard. I'm getting confused just watching it hehe.

maybe... but it could have been improvisation and even if it was an accident it definitely doesn't ruin it..x if anything, it adds to the humour...x

My comment didn't appear?
SF nearly gets his lines wrong at 0:28 (he almost says the next line ) ... he stops (mabye Hugh glares at him?)
pddwatch81 3 years ago 6
i don't think he's about to get it wrong - he just pauses while realizing that hugh has it wrong... both of which are part of the sketch.
aliasanythingyouwant 3 years ago
No it's defo wrong,
"we have 3 sorts sir ..... what sort of hedge would you like" "we have 3 sorts sir, " is the start of the next line.
You can check with other versions of this sketch.
This is SOOOOOO picky, I apologize.
Also HL's face at 0:33 says to me - 'that was close and for god's sake concentrate Fry this is live!'
he then swallows due to a little stage fear.....
I notice things!

As for the end.. it's like an 'anti punch line'
