I've sat in both of them planes and they are amazing my dads mates is in the preservation group so I have access like that to them they are wonderful planes and one of them is having a new engine put in it so they can have both taxi down the run way on open days
Can I please correct you, there are no such things as 'AGE's' to start Lightnings the high pitch wine and hiss is caused by the Avpin starter, which is on the front of each engine, this produces a rush of gasses, into a primary turbine wihich winds the engine up to 34% within 9 seconds. By that time fuel is being pumped to the engine and its dragging its own air, a very simple way of starting jet engines in the days before electric starters
In the US Air Force, the equipment that starts up Jet Aircraft had the nomenclature: AGE (air craft ground equipment)
AGE has a huge blower that initially starts the engine turbines spinning
AGE has a huge engine in it, and a turbo charger that makes a distinctive "whining" sound when it fires up. In fact, it is far more frightening than the actual jet engine firing up! I would swear each time I turned it on the damn thing was going to blow up!
Hi there, its whats known as a trolley Ack, they have been around since pre WW2 they originally carried 2 banks of 6V batteries for starting any aircraft engine.
We use the trolley now with 2 12v lorry batteries, this gives us 24V which is the mimum voltage required to run all the pumps, etc prior and during the start of each engine. (28v is the 'peak' voltage)
The wire (a 'bigun') runs from the trolley ack to the 'power in' point in the starboard wheel well
Brilliant video, well done it was a great day, to all those who missed it and enjoyed this video feel a wee bit guilty, put your hand in your pocket and visit the lpg website donate or buy something, keep these 2 running and protected from the elements for years to come.
Thanks for posting this...excellent stuff.I was hoping to get across for this but had other things on :-( But if there's another event next year,i'll be there!

Amazing seeing the engine turn over after the fuel was injected
IN the old days, ground crews would through walnuts into the engine intake to give it a good cleaning
sugarpuddin88 3 years ago
Was that loud hissing sound the fuel being injected? Were you joking about the walnuts, thats amazing.
