  • a decent portrayal of what this song makes me feel like. not bad.

  • this video is epic trent would be proud of the genius recording that

    love it

  • song is awesome, video, not so much, personally i really like what trent did in his musicvideo's, the camera angles and light, and not over-use the same image over and over again...

  • i love this song!!!!! it likes the perfect song for what i am going through.

  • Can't take it. I love teh Trent. o.O

  • really amazing song.

  • LOVE!! i just want to run around and move to this!!! so much passion and intensity

  • Love NIN

  • dosent it make you feel better haha

  • I prefer this side of NIN, I don't particularly like there songs such as Starfuckers and March of the Pigs

  • This song should be more popular.

  • I wish more musicians (sp?) nowadays had more depth to them like Trent...

I always listen to his music when I write my lil poems.

  • mee too.

Nine inch nails is my muse.

    i'm not gonna lie.

i always spend art class listening to nin.

it just gets me into a deeper thought level.

  • my art teacher is retarted and wont let me bring in nine inch nails

  • that's what ipods are for, dearest.

    =]

  • yeah but i dont have one im getting one

  • your art teacher wont let you bring in Nine inch Nails?

well, surely smaller ones will work just as well?

    lame joke is lame...

  • I think The Fragile is probably the best album for thinking. Most people might actually say Ghosts is, but I disagree.

  • Best NIN song ever.

  • Agreed.

  • great vid

  • Someone needs to make a music video with this song, using illustrations from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series.

    DO IT NOW!

  • It's because you don 't understant de meaning of the lyrics that you say that. The video is perfect for the song.

  • Not entirely. There would probably be an ocean-related suicide in this video if it hit the appropriate meaning.

  • What do you mean? It's a little wierd but it's basically a visual representation of the theme of the song- unlike so many other music videos nowadays.

  • ...for me". Important ending of your sentence...

  • I cant believe the live version is better than studio, the true hallmark of genius

  • this video is great

  • at first listen, it sounds like he's talking about suicide but over the years the song to me is more about the pain of losing someone

  • When I listen to this song, I've always imagined thousands of people looking out on a turbulent sea, and stepping into its dark depths, with galaxy after galaxy reflected in the waves: Creating an illusion that the ocean's black depths lead to an infinite universe of light and color.

  • Dude thats a lot like mine. Only on my interpretation its one man. Like a broken man, at the end of his ropes just traversing the earth until he gets to the edge(like earth is flat) and stepping off, floating and wandering through all existence. Like space.

  • best album ever

  • shit this video was my ideal for the festival of ghosts videos have to try and think of new one

  • "And I descend from grace, in arms of undertow. I will take my place in the Great Below" Best part of the song

  • without a doubt.

  • Really? I think he's got one of the best singing voices I've ever heard. And I went to performing arts school.

  • damn it. I recently uploaded a video accompanying one of my own tracks with pretty much the exact same theme... now I feel a little guilty, I even used some of the same footage :(

  • I think this song is better than this video...

  • nice use of public domain footage. Though....for great below...? I'm not so sure, how about fragile?

  • trent is an amazing artist.

  • This song never, ever, ever gets old.

  • i agree ^^

  • Trent is the Mozart of the modern age

  • Well I'd say Beethoven, but that's me...;)

  • No matter how much I listen to trent it's like... he's still god to me. Genius.

  • many interpretations of this song and we should just stop fighting about the labels and just enjoy the fucking awesome music. I'm like having an ear orgasm here and you guys fighting are ruining it. Let's just all agree Trent is God.

  • here here dude this shit fucking rocks trent is a god

  • epic post dude

  • Very "day of the trifads" 5*****!

  • Incredible song and brilliant lyrics from a genius.

  • Imagine if we spent all those billions or trillions of dollars on new ways to kill ppl on terraforming the moon? Or on nanoscience that could clean up the past 200 years of industrial revolution polution? Instead we are making earth like the moon, or even better... Venus.

  • This song has many different interpretations.

  • OH!!!!

SO SIMILAR TO DEAD CAN DANCE MUSIC!!!

    OH!!!

    but it´s cool, yea, chills:SP

  • What a moron, didn't your mama ever teach you that nothing is everything? This song is about never finding your one true love.

  • uh... no. "the great below" is a reference to withdrawing into the subconscious. "makes me dissapear..."

  • does anyone else get chills at 2:10 in the song

  • Every single time I hear it ;)

  • i get em at 2:51

  • You ARE the authority on this kind of thing, after all.

  • At first this song saddened me. These days it's quite peaceful & calming. Thanks for sharing.

  • perfect song to kill yourself to. also good to just relax to :D

  • this song is so emotionally stirring

    it gives me mixed feelings

  • I like how the Tags for this video say, "Everyone Loves Fake Monkeys"

  • Everything Beautiful Must Be Destroyed Because It Annoys

  • Its in the description. Quick to condemn are we?

  • id have to agree wit knownufo this song is a bit emo. the last four comments even say its weird, saddening, emotionally stirring and the perfect song to kill yourself to.

  • this song was made when emo was just a stain on their daddy's pants

  • emo is stupid the only emo people are those who say they are emo i get called emo a lot but the only emo wons are the posers who think there emo

  • who cares about all that labilling crap just live youre life man ... they can be who they want too be

  • Who gives a flying fuck about titles... you're lame for even denying your "title" and calling others a DIFFERENT title... God... stupid ass...

  • Trent Reznor is a genius of melody, as well as other musical aspects, but melody, is in my opinion the most important one.

  • and it's not just that they're too complicated. It's like they have SO many notes, but Mozart and Beethoven weren't as selective about which ones to include as Trent Reznor is;)

  • Personally, I think its about his grandmother.

  • as jasoncomplicated said, it must be about the sea. i think it makes sense when the song, on the fragile album before, 'the great below' is called 'la mer', which means the sea on french. check the lyrics out, and then you'll find out its the sea he sings about. but a beautiful song, thinks there is some kind of romance about it.

  • i think its the great below as in the sea, this song is about walking into the ocean and letting it take you away

  • If that's what you get from the song- cool. However, I believe you are taking the lyrics a little too literally and mundane.

  • what a journey...

  • By the great below, are they talking about hell, or something beyond that meaning?

  • this song means more to me than some of the greatest works of literature ever written, sounds better than any symphony and is more powerful than thrash/grindcore ive ever heard.

  • I agree. While I do like the "great" symphonies I think they're almost like TOO complicated to evoke a specific emotion effectively. This song is relatively simple and yet incredibly effective in the emotion it's trying to portray.

  • P.S. by "'great' symphonies" I meant like Mozart, Beethoven, etc.

  • I totally agree, DedXyl. This song is a masterpiece and moves me in a way that very little in this life can.

  • "The great below" is one of the most important songs for me ever.

  • the lyrics themselves contain striking apocalyptic imagery- this coming from a divintity student.

  • I like this song, but WTF lmaoo.

This video is fucking weird. :D

  • It's supposed to be about how there are beautiful things in the world, but people just are annoyed by them so they destroy them and look on into a superficial, unnatural future. That's why it shows some asshole sneezing after seeing all the beautiful flowers. :3

  • used to get lost in this song a while ago

pretty dangerous, but I still listen to it from time to time

  • When I first heard this song...I imagined the most incredibly thing. What it was isn't important, but for a song to have that kind of power... So beautiful.

  • This is sooo beautiful...

  • Great song..great video.Something about that song that really fits with me!

  • Just awesome and pure. I can't even imagine how cool it would be with symphonics.

  • the live version of this song on the AATCB(And All That Could have Been) is better than the recorded version but trippy fucking video for sure

  • beautiful work.

  • das ist das geilste lied, dass ich kenne:)

  • Wow, great video! And great song of course

  • BRAVO!

  • Finck is gonna kickass!

  • This song has had a huge impact on my life. It feels like Trent has been in the same place, mentally, that I have myself. I know he's a good 20-something years older than I am, but it feels like he's a kindred spirit. Anyway, this song especially just gives me such an amazing feeling. It's like a soothing hug, a whisper in my ear, and I can't explain it any better than that. I'm actually getting a few lines of this song as my next tattoo. Thank you, Trent Reznor.

  • I've been thinking about this and i figured that: Everybody has problems with with their emotions, lives etc. I have the same problems right now. Point is that Trent put those problems in his music. But i figured that i don't really know this guy and i don't know what kind of man he is. I have strong feelings to music i can say that music is my girlfriend:) music helps me when things go bad or when i am depressed. And Trent's music is very like that. I can feel passion in his music.

  • And maybe this is what keeps you, me and everybody who thinks that way close to this man (or his music:)

  • IMO, Trent's best work.

  • intense

  • this song makes me wanna grab my guy... and make love while we listen to it n_n♥

  • lol

  • elle est tellement badante que j'adore... une fan française.... (L)

  • brilliant song and best comment ever in the about this video section

  • This song is so amazing. It makes me want to run naked through the woods! It also takes me to an awsome mental plane.

  • amazing song!!! nice vid 2.

  • as i listen to this song i cant help but plumit to the great below

  • I can't say I'm a fan of all of NIN's stuffs or trents stuff but certain songs like this one are just mezmorizing and I can't stop listening to them. Though this may sound cliche, some of their songs just take my breath away.

  • keep listening dudeman and eventually every song will blow your fucking mind.

  • Ennit, I agree, and I'm a fucking MC and a chav. I've listened to many music, I think Trent Reznor has to be the most versatile musician around, and makes brilliant sounds with weird meaning in your mind if you get me, also brilliant when you are on mushrooms. Remember this is a chav speaking.

  • great job on the video. This song is one of my favorites. The live version is incredible.

Reznor's a musical genius. Check out his new instrumental album.

  • i can only say : great, sexy :]*.. and cool.. all good words and things.. :)

  • I love the video, well done.

NIN is one of the most innovative bands I've ever listened to.

This song is haunting and beautiful. It speaks to feelings I have in me that are difficult to confront otherwise, but this helps a ton.

  • I totally know the feeling. I stopped listening to NIN for a while but just came back to them a couple weeks ago. Listening to some of the songs anew (like this, WITT and TDTWWA) makes me realise how truly talented Trent is. *sigh* His music touches me in ways nothing else can.

    foolmartyprod - great video :)

  • This song helped me through some really rough times in my life actually, the past couple of years really sucked and I remember listening to this song... it's like an embrace in parts... there's this great book called Steppenwolfe and the main character describes the comfort that we as humans are intelligent enough to be able to choose our own deaths (suicide), and the way he describes it is as a man being like a wolf pacing the side of a cliff and he has the choice to fall into the ravine (die)

  • That's a really nice story (the bit about it helping you). He is honestly just such a talented, honest, touching artist. I'm really glad you had this song to help :)

  • the most desperate song i know from the most psychological band i know just brilliant

  • i respect this band so much and just as Ev3rliving said this is in my opinion one of the best songs i have ever heard in my entire life..... Tool also has alot of great works along with a perfect circle check them out

  • omg that video by tool is so creepy

    i almost threw up

    but i do agree

    its VERY artistic

not quite sure what it means though

  • This is a pretty cool video. The flowers are beautiful, just like the song. I finally got all of the NIN releases, and I have to say, this is absolutely the best slow song I've heard in my life. Not just by Trent, but music as a whole.

  • The reason I love NIN so much is that they have songs for any mood I'm in. Trent's such an amazing song writer. Most bands are could for a particular mood but NIN can do anything. Nice vid.

  • Cool

  • Really cool video!

  • which is an official video of this song?

  • This is to foolmartyrprod,we Destroy what we cannot control!

  • i prefer this album's era for Nine Inch Nails, but Trent Reznor can honestly do no wrong in my eyes and i cant wait for his next album. Great Song- reminds me of suicide.

  • The Fragile era was by far my favorite. I agree he was messed up on drugs and stuff, but his songs were pure lyrical bliss.

i kinda miss the old Trent. But sober Trent is very good too

  • The inspiration died with the drug habit. Compare anything previous to anything on "With Teeth." Yeah. If your art is an expression of pain and bliss in dichotomy, when you take away the flux, you kill your muse.

  • this was the last great album trent made i miss the old NIN 'cause his last releases are just a piece of junk :/

  • whoa!

Year Zero was a really creative album in my opinion.

  • Have you listened to Zero Sum from the Year Zero album? I recommend it. :o)

  • well acctually you're right guys! i need to give a chance to year zero i haven't listened to the whole album yet ;p

  • omg, listen to Year Zero! If you like The Great Below you'll like Zero Sum and In This Twilight.

  • this is really a beautiful song and a very good video. At the beginning there are these wonderful flowers (they're so gorgeous!) and then you see us stupid human beings who destroy everything beautiful. It just fits to the song so much, because, as we all know, in the end, one is washed away, too... it makes me somehow sad and angry. Well done :)

  • nin is a pretty good band

  • The time lapse footage with the flowers creates a beautiful visual aesthetic. Especially with this song. Very interesting.

  • possibly my favorite slow NIN song...its so powerful. who would disagree with that?!

  • Nine Inch Nails is now and forever will be my favorite band. Trent is a genius for lack of a better term. Both sides of "The Fragile" is pure bliss...

  • 110% agree Trent is the shit as are all of his albums

  • fuck yes

trent should be given the nobel prize just for inventing good music

  • this song makes me fucking fall asleep, this song is awesome!!!!!! NIN rules!!!!!!!

  • when I try to fall asleep I listen to the "Still" album. it's slower and more peaceful.

  • this song makes me wish i was a female to bear trent's babies

  • ???

  • Just accept it

  • Some data.

  • wtf!

  • you're a fag, I'm a pretty big fan of nine inch nails, but that's goin to far

  • right, cuz I wasn't joking...i was being dead serious >_>

  • I hope you know that Trent wouldn't appreciate you derogatory use of the word "fag" for homosexuals.

  • It's not gay if it's Trent, retard...

  • I love the concept of your video....Its great. I did not understand what the quote below meant until I watched the video...great job!!

"Everything beautiful must be destroyed because it annoys us"

  • I'm addicted to this song...

  • me 2

  • very interesting footage...the narration might be a bit less directly

but I really like it :-)

  • ..and i will take my place in the great below...

  • This video is about being a weed (different) growing up in an enviroment of beauty, and here you are a weed very different from a flower of beauty. Even though you are beautiful in your own way, the weed must be killed because it is not the same as the flower. But no matter who you are, you have a place in the world. Everyone is beautiful!Just remember that, you are beautiful!!!!

  • This is the most beautiful song ever, my favorite song ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Bitches you better appreciate, and listen!!!!

  • amazing song. just amazing. its one of those songs you can just listen to eternily because its so epic

  • i love this song!!!!!!!!!!!

    thx 4 posting!

  • not bad but im not a fan of flowers

  • dud flowers are badass

    don't think im gay tho

  • Beautiful things annoy you? Why?

  • One of their best songs

  • i feel tht the end was perfect for this video because it symbolizes how since we are destroying our earth we are going to other places to destroy because thts all humanity is good at destroying everything beautiful
