well..it's not a hard song. Length does not associate with difficulty. To play it correctly? while there is a way to make it sound most beautiful, it's not like any way else is incorrect. One thing i would like to hear is more dynamics. You need to make the difference between soft and loud larger. For me, it almost sounds like its the same forte.
true this is a long song, but it doesn't get hard until the 3rd movement. A seven year old can play the 1st movement with his eyes close. Keep on working on it thats it.
That was terrible!!!!!!!!! and wtf was that little pause? you need to buy a better piano too. it also seems that you are still having trouble with this song. and you have no technique, no emotion, and no musicality. also, just before those last 2 notes, you didnt rest enough. very disgusting
Terrible? Right. Shows how much you know about music. It's not the piano; it just needs to be tuned. Like a lot of people, they don't play from the mind / heart; they play from the book. Straight forward and smooth with no "emotion". The song is meant to be much slower as well though 'to each his own'. Instead of being a rude jack ass, maybe you should go do the world a favor and play in traffic.
I thought that it was played really good. I don't know if i'll ever be able to play that song, its seems so hard >.<. I just got the music for it and only know the beginnning part of it all. But overall awesome job keep it up !!!
use a little less pedal, because it messes with the song... >< a lot of people overdo it on the pedal--it TOTALLY gets on my nerves. Besides the mistakes, I think you should pour yourself into the song--it's a song that the pianist needs to feel, rather than memorize or play.
never got to playing this song before, but its def on my todo list =) come check out some of my piano videos, hope you like them! tell me what you think!
Hmm i played that a while back, makes me want to go record it and post it. I'll let you know if i do it. More feeling though would make it sound so much better. Try speeding up on the last part it makes for a dramatic end ;) but not too loud!

you played it really good. but yea like some said. work on your tempo and make it more like...eerie. but you did good. i started learning it but never really got around to finish it. good job!
Comment part 2: XD I know, a very old saying. Ok gj though. I wouldn't do the other movements if I were you... LOL I'm just kidding, obviously not. I don't think I could even O_O.
Comment part 1)I know the people that actually know what they are talking about already said this, but, your tempo is really fast. It should be going so0o0ooo much slower. Do you have a piano teacher? I don't think this video would make her too happy. You need to bring out the melodic notes; stop banging out the rest. I think it would help you a lot if you slowed it down. That's like hitting 2 birds with one stone.
-pedaling, (it sometimes smudges the chords together)
you want it to sound romantic and mushy, yet it should still have a clear and crisp sound.
-also, the una corda pedal. i believe it is written you "una corda" on the score, but i can't remember. When I play it, i use the far left pedal for most of the double pianos.
natural talent there...you need to slow the piece down a bit...it sounds a bit rushed and panic that's why you stalled a bit sometimes...but with a bit more practise it would sound great...keep working at it! ;)
im teaching myself this song on guitar but nothing beats the piano at this song of course how long did it take u to learn this song?....once again this song...not how many years have u bn playing...this song how long?
i played this last year! itsnt it pretty? one of my favorite songs to play. i still play it every so often. nice job for someone who has very little time on his hands :]
This is very good. Better than your Fur Elise, I'd say. But on the scale parts that have the constant low G octave chord in the left hand, be sure not to lose the tempo. This may be because of just recent memorization, but that's just my tip. Watch pedal slurring, and try and work some softs into it, it was altogether very loud, a completely opposite feel for the piece. Again, it was good. Keep working.
Gawd, I'm soo sick of this song, along with 'Heart & Soul' 'Fur Elise' 'Cannon in D' or varations of the like unless by G. Winston. Everyone, I mean EVERYONE plays these songs as if they were the only songs written for piano! Mix it up people!
Anyway, I thought you did a pretty good job. I'm not a perfect piano player myself but I am learning that piece as well. I'd say what you need to work on especially are the dynamics and try to go a little slower and more dramatic. This is Beethoven here and the Moonlight Movements are pretty sad. But otherwise I enjoyed it!
Wow...I read most of the comments here but it was too depressing to read all of them. Jeez people it's called *constructive* criticism not stomp on you and crap all over the place.
Thank you [= I totally agree, just say it's good or bad...and give me hints to what wouold make it better, well anyway tomorrow im going to recoede it again on a grand piano in my high school, hope you watch it! [=
Chopin had a massive handspan; many of his difficult pieces were not commonly attempted for quite some time, given that they were deemed impossible without his hand size. His fingers were thin, and very long, especially his pinky. His hand cast remains intact.
But thank you for reinforcing what I said... and I'll say again that the kid's hands are too stumpy for piano. Better to be honest than to lead him on a delusional path. haha
Good God! Could the book be wrong?! The cast is normal, his hand is normal, his handspan was normal... 9ths thats on a c major scale - c-d-e-f-g-a-b-c-d... whats so extraordinary about that?
I found the preformance very good sence it was all from memory. I play the piano as well, I hear my friend's dad play that, and he's a music teacher and he plays with more mistakes than you sometimes. Keep up the good work and nice job!
Contrary to popular belief, "long fingers" aren't ideal for piano playing. Chopin had some of the smallest hands in piano and look at what he did. He played with his hands facing slightly inward. So, "short stumpy hands" are better than "long piano fingers."
You obviously do not know what you are talking about.....which is ironic being that your logon is "thepianist".... Chopin had very long fingers. The cast they made of his hand was very slender and LONG, especially his pinkie. In fact, many pianists find his pieces to be particularly difficult because of the range of the notes. Rachmaninoff had even bigger hands but played/wrote some of the most beautiful music. You are quite pretentious.... get your facts straight.
Now now friend...would you like me to get the ISBN number for the book that it comes from? My facts are quite straight, Chopin was envious of other pianists in his school because they could hit 9ths like octaves. He could only comfortably hit 8ths like octaves. I've seen a picture of the cast, and his pinky is not abnormally long.
As far as Rachmaninoff, his hands were probably the biggest in piano. Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Debussy all had very large hands. Rachmaninoff played 12ths. Thats half an inch larger than a piece of paper, long ways. Now, friend. Learn YOUR facts ;-)
Apparently you don't know how to read as well. I said Chopin had LONG FINGERS, which is a fact. I also said that Rachmaninoff had big hands, so how is that contrary to what you just said?
Hmm, this was pretty good, just some wrong notes here and there. It was alittle "Choppy" on some parts. There were alor of wrong finger numbers wrong towards the end. Though, over all, it was nice. Keep up the good work!
1 - no feeling off major notes 2 - key presses need to be harder emotional notes 3 - garbled area where music does not match origonal 4 - timing goes WAY off and a huge pause is heard where it shouldnt be 5 - timing stretches out and a mistaken note is heard (one fourth of way through) 6 - mistakes , mistakes , mistakes, where is your ear?? 7 - sounds like a zombie is playing this part, more mistakes, that note does not belong there man 8 - did you get lost there? another mistake! 9 - timing!!
It really does lack expression. It's as if someone put it on a music editor and put it on play. We can't hear any of beethoven's thoughtfulness.. there's no contrast in between the climax and the beginning. I have been playing piano since I was 6 years old, and this song is pretty basic. I think you should appreciate the comments that you are receiving and make them constructive. Just put more feeling.
loulunis... if ur gonna say sumtin mean den dont say it at all... and dont tell me dat he started it cuz ur da one hoo da made the rude comment first... and i dont care wat u say back cuz i dont even care wat u think lol and hey please forget about everyone on this page because trust me... we've already forgotten about you..
cont'd Once again, to the general public, this is an overplayed song, but I play it b/c I have not been satisfied with recordings I've heard...so I interpret the song for myself, and emotionally, this is not a simple piece. Play long enough and you'll understand. =)
(cont'd)...you might think it's hard, but soon, you'll know when to do it second-hand, and you won't have to think about it. just trying to give you productive criticism, no hard feelings, but the fact that you know these songs by memory now, I think you really should take the time to master them =)I've also had this piece with me for about 3 years, I still play it almost daily.
once again, good try, it's good you have it memorized and everything, but for the parts where u mess up, do go back to the sheet music, read, and make you u hammer it down (no pun intended), also, I think you need to work on your dynamics (and technique of course); lift your fingers/wrists on transitions or in legatos
You totally butchered the song. Playing the piano piece is not only about hitting the right notes, but how much feeling you put into the performance, particularly with a song like Moonlight Sonata. Your tempo is off as well. You are also playing it much MUCH too fast. I played the piano for 16 years and I still occassionally play this piece when I have time.
what do you mean you didnt have a lot of time to practice, it was your video its not like you had to hurry for a concert or anything, you should of waited until you had it perfect to show someone
but thats just my take on you saying you didnt have enough time
One word to describe this song; haunting. You captured that perfectly! I've tried to play this many a time and have settled with repeating a variation of the first minute of the song (because my fingers are crap). You should be proud of yourself.
you're good...I'd like to give u a few tips and if it doesnt work dont kill me,tip #1: RELAX! and then play with feeling,Tip#2: dont make ur wrist so tight. after u play 4 a while it feels cramped,tip#3: play from ur knuckles, once u play more complicated peices u'll understand why...uh..anyways good job!
I love this song and you are really great i used to play back in the days and i quit but now watching this i regret it so much.Im learning this .even if it takes me all year . keep up with it .
I viewed this earlier.. and came back to try to play it. I can play easier by ear and like memorizing.. I was able to watch the keys you were playing and play the song never having learned it before .. it's a bit time-consuming but it makes me want to go out and get the music now. Awesome dude!!
I've read through every single comment (very depressing). I didn't think one constructive criticism would lead to such an intense, vulgar, and waste of time argument. I'm only a beginner (I'll problably get scorn if that college student was here ^_^) and all I have to say is take the criticism and make something out of it. If it is right then why getting upset? If it is wrong then ignore it. Don't let something like this stop you.
You meant to play this Adagio Sostenuto. Slow down. Other then that, fantastic.

Chopin is clearly not Classical. And, actually, it's not "amature" OR "amatuer." It's AMATEUR. Just thought I'd get that out of the way.
But, I actually really didn't think it was bad at all. There were just a couple flubs, but who cares? We all make them.
And to whoever said it should be played only on a Yamaha:
Yamaha's are really loud. It sounds really good on a Mason & Hamlin. They have extremely good pianos.

nice attempt. sounds good

why does everybody only play the first movement of the moonlight sonata??
thewendigo 5 years ago
You should not be using the pedal for this song at all. Your timing was pretty good for someone trying to recall by heart.
Sassyrecombinantpass 5 years ago
but try some much more faster songs as well!
thats what i loved playing the piano =)
xCNapo 5 years ago
hahah, very good man, as some said, your tempo aint correct some times, but its good at all.
i also learned the moonlight sonata when i was 14 years old. but after that i stopped playing piano. however, good job dude! i know that its hard ;-)
xCNapo 5 years ago
Wow you make me jealous and want to pick up on my lessons again.

you played it really good. but yea like some said. work on your tempo and make it more like...eerie. but you did good. i started learning it but never really got around to finish it. good job!

damn, you suck ass. how did you manage to pull over 30 000 views?

u are banging on the piano.... play it more softly and slower will be nice :) and no stopping!!! lols practice more ^^ i practice 4 hours a day x.x
Rachymeow 5 years ago
You could try to hold the top notes (melody) while playing the lower notes in the right hand.
It sounds better and you can switch the pedal without losing the melody what often happened.
w3sp 5 years ago
Comment part 2: XD I know, a very old saying. Ok gj though. I wouldn't do the other movements if I were you... LOL I'm just kidding, obviously not. I don't think I could even O_O.
kyle556 5 years ago
Comment part 1)I know the people that actually know what they are talking about already said this, but, your tempo is really fast. It should be going so0o0ooo much slower. Do you have a piano teacher? I don't think this video would make her too happy. You need to bring out the melodic notes; stop banging out the rest. I think it would help you a lot if you slowed it down. That's like hitting 2 birds with one stone.
kyle556 5 years ago
a couple of things you need to watch for;
-your tempi,
-pedaling, (it sometimes smudges the chords together)
you want it to sound romantic and mushy, yet it should still have a clear and crisp sound.
-also, the una corda pedal. i believe it is written you "una corda" on the score, but i can't remember. When I play it, i use the far left pedal for most of the double pianos.
-don't thump it! be nice an gentle.
-big improvement from your fuer elise ;)
Anyway! this is great!

natural talent there...you need to slow the piece down a bit...it sounds a bit rushed and panic that's why you stalled a bit sometimes...but with a bit more practise it would sound great...keep working at it! ;)

that's pretty good......now work on "fantasie impromtu"
foxo661 6 years ago
This is very good. Better than your Fur Elise, I'd say. But on the scale parts that have the constant low G octave chord in the left hand, be sure not to lose the tempo. This may be because of just recent memorization, but that's just my tip. Watch pedal slurring, and try and work some softs into it, it was altogether very loud, a completely opposite feel for the piece. Again, it was good. Keep working.
thoreador 6 years ago
This song is mainly soft. I heard no dynamics throughout that whole playback. You played the notes well, but there was no feeling in it.
Skyhawk432 6 years ago
Gawd, I'm soo sick of this song, along with 'Heart & Soul' 'Fur Elise' 'Cannon in D' or varations of the like unless by G. Winston. Everyone, I mean EVERYONE plays these songs as if they were the only songs written for piano! Mix it up people!
mtriplea 6 years ago
I dont know to much about music but that sounds awesome to me. keep it up buddy Beethoven is the best composer of all time
bbcboy 6 years ago
Excellent. Only thing I wanna pick about is at the beginning you're too loud, and you're playing the song too fast. Good though :D
SweetLeangel 6 years ago

In response:
Not entirely true...
Chopin had a massive handspan; many of his difficult pieces were not commonly attempted for quite some time, given that they were deemed impossible without his hand size. His fingers were thin, and very long, especially his pinky. His hand cast remains intact.
jblcclbj 6 years ago
I responded before I saw your post.
But thank you for reinforcing what I said... and I'll say again that the kid's hands are too stumpy for piano. Better to be honest than to lead him on a delusional path. haha
stuffedtater 6 years ago
Good God! Could the book be wrong?! The cast is normal, his hand is normal, his handspan was normal... 9ths thats on a c major scale - c-d-e-f-g-a-b-c-d... whats so extraordinary about that?
thepianist 6 years ago
play a little slower...otherthan that it was perfect..make it seem more dramatic

REMEMBER: "1-2-3. 1-2-3, 1-2-3" TRIP-oh-let, TRIP-oh-let, TRIP-oh-let. Just don't let that "TRIP" get to heavy...then it sounds all... chromatic.

HorrorRabbit 6 years ago
I found the preformance very good sence it was all from memory. I play the piano as well, I hear my friend's dad play that, and he's a music teacher and he plays with more mistakes than you sometimes. Keep up the good work and nice job!
HermioneJr 6 years ago
your hands are also kind of stumpy for piano playing
stuffedtater 6 years ago
Contrary to popular belief, "long fingers" aren't ideal for piano playing. Chopin had some of the smallest hands in piano and look at what he did. He played with his hands facing slightly inward. So, "short stumpy hands" are better than "long piano fingers."
thepianist 6 years ago
You obviously do not know what you are talking about.....which is ironic being that your logon is "thepianist".... Chopin had very long fingers. The cast they made of his hand was very slender and LONG, especially his pinkie. In fact, many pianists find his pieces to be particularly difficult because of the range of the notes. Rachmaninoff had even bigger hands but played/wrote some of the most beautiful music. You are quite pretentious.... get your facts straight.
stuffedtater 6 years ago
Now now friend...would you like me to get the ISBN number for the book that it comes from? My facts are quite straight, Chopin was envious of other pianists in his school because they could hit 9ths like octaves. He could only comfortably hit 8ths like octaves. I've seen a picture of the cast, and his pinky is not abnormally long.
thepianist 6 years ago
As far as Rachmaninoff, his hands were probably the biggest in piano. Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Debussy all had very large hands. Rachmaninoff played 12ths. Thats half an inch larger than a piece of paper, long ways. Now, friend. Learn YOUR facts ;-)
thepianist 6 years ago
Apparently you don't know how to read as well. I said Chopin had LONG FINGERS, which is a fact. I also said that Rachmaninoff had big hands, so how is that contrary to what you just said?
stuffedtater 6 years ago
I agree with stuffed.
kyle556 5 years ago
Hmm, this was pretty good, just some wrong notes here and there. It was alittle "Choppy" on some parts. There were alor of wrong finger numbers wrong towards the end. Though, over all, it was nice. Keep up the good work!

oh.. well now that i read your intro I understand, that was all from memory? nice job.
davexz 6 years ago
1 - no feeling off major notes 2 - key presses need to be harder emotional notes 3 - garbled area where music does not match origonal 4 - timing goes WAY off and a huge pause is heard where it shouldnt be 5 - timing stretches out and a mistaken note is heard (one fourth of way through) 6 - mistakes , mistakes , mistakes, where is your ear?? 7 - sounds like a zombie is playing this part, more mistakes, that note does not belong there man 8 - did you get lost there? another mistake! 9 - timing!!

this is my favorite song by beethoven
sugarcubedenial 6 years ago
awesome though the original is better
rakgi 6 years ago
It really does lack expression. It's as if someone put it on a music editor and put it on play. We can't hear any of beethoven's thoughtfulness.. there's no contrast in between the climax and the beginning. I have been playing piano since I was 6 years old, and this song is pretty basic. I think you should appreciate the comments that you are receiving and make them constructive. Just put more feeling.

cont'd Once again, to the general public, this is an overplayed song, but I play it b/c I have not been satisfied with recordings I've heard...so I interpret the song for myself, and emotionally, this is not a simple piece. Play long enough and you'll understand. =)
beyond9001 6 years ago
(cont'd)...you might think it's hard, but soon, you'll know when to do it second-hand, and you won't have to think about it. just trying to give you productive criticism, no hard feelings, but the fact that you know these songs by memory now, I think you really should take the time to master them =)I've also had this piece with me for about 3 years, I still play it almost daily.
beyond9001 6 years ago
once again, good try, it's good you have it memorized and everything, but for the parts where u mess up, do go back to the sheet music, read, and make you u hammer it down (no pun intended), also, I think you need to work on your dynamics (and technique of course); lift your fingers/wrists on transitions or in legatos
beyond9001 6 years ago
You totally butchered the song. Playing the piano piece is not only about hitting the right notes, but how much feeling you put into the performance, particularly with a song like Moonlight Sonata. Your tempo is off as well. You are also playing it much MUCH too fast. I played the piano for 16 years and I still occassionally play this piece when I have time.
stuffedtater 6 years ago
what do you mean you didnt have a lot of time to practice, it was your video its not like you had to hurry for a concert or anything, you should of waited until you had it perfect to show someone
but thats just my take on you saying you didnt have enough time

One word to describe this song; haunting. You captured that perfectly! I've tried to play this many a time and have settled with repeating a variation of the first minute of the song (because my fingers are crap). You should be proud of yourself.

i disagree.. it;s a little too cheerful. the hauntingnesss and pensiveness is NOT there...
