  • HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!

  • I must say, Renee in the 90's has no rival. The quality of her line is astounding. In my opinion- this is how Mozart should be sung.

  • @lisamayavonB thank you so much for the libretto

  • Please someone post the entire libretto from E Susana through Dove Sono. Eg words or lyrics whatever you prefer!

  • she is astonishing. i literally cried on the piano 4:05. holy mother of god.

  • More than beautiful vocal line-- sensuality in the phrasing and musical choices.

  • Beautiful vocal line. Can't get enough of it.

  • Wow .. not normally a fan of Renee Fleming but i can't believe she can sing these long legato phrases while sitting like that! And the acting is amazing .. love the little ornamnet at 4.48 too (i'm gonna steal that one)

  • Wonderful. But I prefer Cecilia Bartoli's version better.

  • @powe2550 Are you insane? Cecilia does not have the voice to sing this song.

  • @operageek1011 Have you heard Cecilia's recording of it? Her control vocal control and musical shape are amazing!

  • @operageek1011 Oops. I should have proof read that reply. Sorry for the poor English! ;-)

  • @operageek1011 Have you listened to her recording? You might be pleasantly surprised! Check out dove sono damrau vs. bartoli

  • goosebumps.

  • so like Renee to break character during an opera for a bow. haha still love her.

  • Bravo Renee Fleming!

  • I'm not fooled.

  • The applause at the end is chill-inducing. And so well deserved. Brava!

  • This is absolutely splendid, and explains why she is a primadonna in the MET - at least her past achievements. Bravissima!

  • My God! Noooooo!!!!!

  • @ferrykalos Would be interesting to know what grounds do you have to think so?)

  • to this day, this moment is one of the pinnacles of her amazing career.

  • spellbinding performance! i wish to be able to see her live on stage one day…

  • Wow! Renee sang her (broken) heart out! Impressive performance!

  • These opera videos bring out the worst in some and the best in others. They afford us the opportunity to hear the greatest vocal talents for free. There are singers, wannabes, pedagogists and other lovers of Classical music who need to share their opinions about these talents. There is nothing wrong with sharing an opinion - this is my opinion - don't miss out on the bliss of the music simply because you think you know or hope to know everything about the voice and its production.

  • At 4:48, she brings tears to my eyes because she just puts so much expression and feeling into it!

The only DVD Version of Le Nozze with her is The 1994 production from the Glyndebourne. The set isn't as great, but the talent is phenomonal! And she did it while she was pregnant! Now how's that for skill?!

  • RENEE FLEMING IS A GODDESS.

  • hahahahahaha "i've always had trouble with Renee's intonation" hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha

  • I have always had trouble with Renee's intonation. It's just not always right on.

  • @Owenbob Renee has problems but I've never thought of pitch as one of the major ones.

  • I love the naturalness of this performance. Excellent singing coupled with great acting.

  • please someone tell me where I can find this version on DVD, i've been looking!

  • @piratzrule Sorry, there isn't a DVD of this production. People say one of the singers didn't allowe that.

  • Renee Fleming est mon idole !

elle est mieux que parfaite ! ...

  • Fleming was FINE that day wasn't she?

  • The way she sustains the repeatedly long vocal lines in this particular aria not only in the major tone but also the second time on a volume between piano and pianissimo is so incredible - she is the Ultimate Queen of the Vocal Line - I lost my breath watching her do this and I cant help but wonder if she stands still in that particular moment (4:05) in order not to consume oxygen with her movements

  • in this role before and after kiri is no one till now is one else than kiri.in every sence and way.

  • Beautifull, bravo.

  • That pause was just so well placed

  • Check out Sophie farmer singing 'the prayer'

Good to see new young artists coming through

  • She is a great Mozartian and should have sung alot more of the repertoire. In those days her command was unbelievable and she was less proned to mannerisms. She was a great Fiordiligi, Donna Anna and Pamina. This Dove Sono ranks amongst the best in line with some of the great Mozart sopranos including Schwarzkopf, Della Casa, Janowitz,Te Kanawa and Margaret Price.

  • Anyone that says Mozart is awful must not love music or singing. IMHO.

  • QUE MARAVILLA !

    HERMOSA RENEE

  • Wonderfully done!

  • I'm truly happy that I don't know in detail how Mozart "should be sung", because it seems that if I did, I would not be able to appreciate this astoundingly beautiful performance to the fullest, according to many comments here.

  • @lisamayavonB In fact an excessive technical knowledge of music....kills music itself....

  • @sinoples I don't agree.

  • she is so incredible!

  • The great thing about Music is that there's something for everyone. I've heard bad comments about Renee, about her execusion or technique. The only one thing I can say back to those people is that this Aria precisely is perfection in all contexts. Every phrase, each line, her face, her every move on stage, it all comes down to the best Dove Sono i have had the privilege to listen to in a while! Brava!

  • "juramenti" at 4.49 is pure bliss!!!

  • @lisamayavonB Agreed!! :) I love the pause she takes at 4:03, too. I realized I was holding my breath waiting to see what she'd do next, haha.

  • @streepology

Absolutely, I did, too. I think there are so many fantastic renditions of this aria here on YT.... but she does take it a step further with her dramatic skills...

  • Wow!! How I wish I could sing like this fantastic lady..... incredible!!!

  • muchísimas gracias por subir con subtítulos!!!!

  • Perfection!

  • Every syllable here has meaning in her singing.Wondrous! Everything she does in any work she takes on shows this kind of dedication and affinity!

  • maravillosa!!!!

  • I have NEVER heard this aria done better!

  • The best rendition of this aria I've heard next to Te Kanawa. Amazing. In the repat of the slow section, time stood still.

  • Excuse the caps but.... MOZART IS A GENIUS.

  • Does anyone knows where I can find this version of le nozze di figaro ?

  • @SnakePlissken2 I have yet to find a DVD or video recording of this, but the entire opera is available through the Met's "Met Player". You can sign up for a subscription on their website. It's definitely worth it -- tons of television and radio broadcasts over the past 50+ years.

  • omg love love this so much she's amazing !!!!!

  • This is the exact costume she's wearing on the cover of her book "The Inner Voice". I just barely noticed that.

  • Increible,genial,hermoso,no tengo palabras.. facinante......

  • I am still mad at this woman for making a meal out this recitative and aria like this! Oh my gosh...I will NEVER forget the audience just SCREAMING when she was finished...and she just walks off the stage like someone called her for dinner.

  • i don't know if this comment is praising her or dissing her. but, whatever it is, Renee Fleming is amazing, and her interpretation of "Dove Sono" is impeccable. Brava, Renee

  • So much the worse for the audience. Long live the Queen!!!

  • @DEFinitivelyHis LOL @ a meal. Well put. I love her...

  • Son trille me fascine toujours. :-)

  • Awsome great!!!

  • I've heard people say that her Mozart is awful. I can't accept that. Her interpretation seems so spontaneous and her singing so effortless, I can't help but believe that she is the countess.

  • @RabbitDeberry Who says that?? She's very good!!!!

  • impeccable!!!

  • no not saying tht at all really...just saying that Renee not only projects and instills the musics innate ability for movement both through her superior intellect in theory as well as performance but also through her very aura and natural presence in her stage deportment. Or perhaps you could call me ignorant?

  • Wow, how can she sing almost the entire aria from a sitting position, that's VERY difficult!!

  • Actually, while sitting you can really get a circular breath of air. Not that you can't get it while standing, but you can feel it much more while sitting. Same as when you're laying flat on the floor.

  • I love this video because apart from the incredible singing, we can see her breathing technique.

  • I'm pretty sure a Contessa would slouch if she were desperate to find out where her love went wrong. It's not all tea and crumpets. They're human too. The pianissimo in the return really did it for me. The Met is such an expansive place. To pull off that kind of pianissimo in that environment is a feat all by itself. Can you imagine going to work and being lauded like this night after night? Ahh, to be Renee.

  • @toshavery OMG, well put...

  • I love Renee! her voice is so beautiful....

  • she is a full liryc soprano...she has got a big voice!

  • The repeat really captures the sadness of the Countess in a way I haven't heard except perhaps Leila Cuberli. The problem is the sliding into notes; it isn't Mozart. Being tired isn't an excuse; she has been scooping since the mid-90s.

  • Renee's performance is beautiful, but her technique doesn't feel like Mozart--it's a Romantic approach to the piece. I still think Dame Kiri's performance is definitive. Another good one is that of Lucia Popp.

  • and Gundula Janowicz !!!! is marvelous..!!

  • Style changes. Listen to recordings from the 50s. It's less "period", yeah. Is it bad? That's up to you.

  • i LOVE HOW SHE CONNECTED WiTH THE CHARACTER AT THiS MOMENT SHE iS NO LONGER RENEE SHE iS CONTESSA...THiS iS THE REASON i LOVE HER SHE CONNECTS GREATLY WiTH THE CHARACTER AND THE AUDiENCE AS WELL..

  • She is so increadible at capturing the moment. Her acting is so believable and her singing is outstanding! I can't get enough of Renee Fleming. My absolute favorite singer in the whole world.

  • That is so awesome! She sings this aria like it's the easiest thing! Chapeau!

  • Kanawa`s performance I found on yt is good, maybe even great - but it`s not perfect.

    1. K.`s italian sounds bad even to a non-italian.

    2. A singer is more than a voice, the personality is also important. Renee acts better, I believe her suffering.

    3. K. is not always in tempo.

    4. Renee sings seemingly without any effort, which I cannot say about Kanawa.

Beyond that it`s a matter of taste but there ARE ways to judge. Just think about auditions.

That said: I love love love Renees Countess.

  • @Gandaleon you have picked the two finest soprano voices of my time- Kiri may not be as exact or all encompassing an artist as Renee, but Te Kenawa's beautiful tone,so easy on the ears,is a thing of beauty-Renee's voice may not be as big, so the effort, or lack of, in comparison to Kiri seems less.- They are both great artists - Fleming can just about do anythg with her voice- Kiri slightly more limited but the beauty and brilliance of her instrument in its prime - maybe unequalled

  • i think the Renee is does the best dove sono

  • Mozart gives us a glimpse of heaven

  • I enjoy both singers greatly, so I agree treating them like soccer teams and supporting one against the other is pointless. Their talents are both great and if there is something in Miss Te Kanawa's performance that tips the balance for you, I totally respect that.

  • Every time I listen to this, I think "WOW, FLEMING!" but I also think "WOW, MOZART!!!"

    Mozart was a genius.

  • Of course he was!

  • Kiri doesnt have the musicality like Fleming does dont forget that....people can b trained to sing but not trained to be musical

  • diva. So Kiri is not musical... Some might disagree.

  • Comment removed

  • @divalicious002 I agree that Fleming's musicality is endless - She is an a true artist with an unbelievable gift -Te Kenawa has a beautiful sound -extremely focused and full on top but not quite as secure professionally as Miss Fleming.- They are both so great this is a case where you don't want to choose - Doesn' t happen very often

  • Wow! Mi piace.

  • how long does figaro oper take when fleming sings as the contess...

    lol

  • just perfect :)

  • I love Flemings voice, but she disappoints me with her Mozart. She isn't as good a kiri for one reason and one reason alone. she " strokes the glottis" far too much, fine for Verdi and Puccini b ut no for Mozart.

  • Haha what a lot of nonsense!

  • It's not nonsense, you just have to listen to the above recording and then one of te Kanawa straight afterwards, kiri's musical "Line" is far more smooth and much less disjointed than Rennee's, she would be perfection itself if she would just stop all that whooping in the recit.

  • I agree. I'm not sure it's her only problem (not that I'm suggesting she's anything other than a superb singer) but it's the only facet of her singing which really irritates me. Perhaps she copies the swooping effect (which is sometimes effective, as you say, in Verdi and Puccini) from Leontyne Price, another great artist and Fleming's personal hero.

  • Rattywotin: I like Fleming but I totally agree. the sob/whoop is out of place in Mozart.

  • It's sloppy besides the countess doesn't slouch. In her defense she was tired, she did this production, street car and was going through a divorce.

  • Perfection indeed!

  • this is perfection

  • tooooooooooooooooooooo slow she usually takes everything too slow but i love renee none the less

  • In Olympic terms she won the gold medal!!!

  • i adore her!!!!!!!!!!! she's the best contessa!!

  • Certified Intergalactic! Love you, Renee...

  • sorry all -- this is perfection never to be surpassed by anyone. love kiri, but renee takes this one hands down.

  • I would have to agree that Kiri Te Kanawa was absolutely wonderful on this piece and was my favorite Countess. Having said that, Renee Fleming does a wonderful job here.

  • Wow; Renee Fleming in full musical and dramatic flight is just stunning!

  • Renee has a great voice, but she tends to put too much force into this aria. It is supposed to float and be easy, not used as a test of vocal power.

  • i might agree with you about that statement in the recit... but her singing of the aria is the definition of floating and easy

  • I'm convinced that Fleming is an artist who must be heard Live to be really appreciated. Recordings like this one just don't quite capture the sonority of her unique voice.

  • Yes, but ooh KIRI, my love

  • I don't want to be one of those jerks who insult brilliant artists, but this song belongs to Kiri Te Kanawa. Fleming is very talented, and her voice has such a natural smoothness/richness, but I don't think Mozart suits her at all. Her scooping and expressive techniques belongs to something more romantic. I like her a lot, but I wish she could be more versatile like my dear Kiri. I see Fleming as a currrent version of Kiri's status in the 80s/90s with her full lyric, but Kiri is leagues ahead.

  • Kiri Te Kanawa is good but so is

    Renee Fleming

  • COMPLETELY agreed, saxamaphoneguy1. Te Kanawa is incredible on this. no comparison. sorry, Jasondavis1969, no contest here. Te Kanawa was also a better singer technically. there's no comparison between the two. Te Kanawa's voice was pure, free, flexible, and just of a nicer timbre. Wish I could have heard her more.

  • I think Renee Fleming is good also.

    Thanks: Jason D.

  • Renee Fleming holds a mirror up to our souls. Do we like what we see in ourselves and appreciate the artist? Or do we fear what we see in ourselves and despise the artist?

  • che voce!!!

  • shut your trap you idiotic bastard you have no right to slander an artist of her staus and talent take your insults somewhere else you red nicked cow

  • I think you're the talentless cow, but it's ok. Not everyone is destined to go beyond burger flipping status. Keep your chin up buddy. ^_^

  • Your experience or mine? I never worked in a fast-food joint. Anyway, hard to take insults from someone into TMNT.

    LMFAO

  • I just love the way she leads the phrases and her voice! pure perfection! :)

  • she is my favourite singer. Always love her trills; so jealous lol

  • I think that she tries hard, but there is something lacking, when compared with the likes of the German sopranos Janowitz, Schwarzkopf and Te Kanawa

  • Renee Fleming is full to overflowing with ebulliently and effusively overflowing effervescence.

  • A...MAZ...ING! Her control at 'dove antaro' (4:50-ish!) is sickeningly brilliant! Love, love, LOVE her!!! Thanks so much for posting x

  • i heard that too...I had to replay it several times. Very musically intelligent..i think that note coveys The Countess's sadness very well.

  • this is one of my favourite arias, i love it so much.

the props and sets are absolutely beautiful, they really bring the piece to its best.

  • thank You Onegin65 and Youtube for this video... it's amazing

  • Ah, THIS is the Renee I know and love -- glorious, elegant singing. Her wonderful artistry, right here. Of late, the best things I've heard from her are Korngold and Tchaikovsky; I'm so glad this was documented.

  • Agreed -- the Korngold Proms performance and the Marietta Lied on youtube and the Met Tatiana are fantastic. She's so hot and cold these days... I miss THIS Renee.

  • This is by far the best rendition of this aria that I've ever heard. It tears me to pieces every time I hear it.

  • I really think Mozart wrote the best opera music for Soprano/Mezzo.

  • poor thing can't even take a bow after all that work.

  • love her. love love love her so much. this interpretation is by far her best. ab fab :D

  • amazing

  • Excelente interpretacion!!!! Alabanzas!!! Maestrisima

  • Renee at her best.

  • The best singing/interpretation of her life is in this clip.

  • I agree!

  • Would someone have the music score for voice to share with me? Or help me find the best on line?

    Thanks :-)

  • this literally makes me cry every time. i am a music student and ms. fleming has just been my inspiration lately. her grace, elegance and poise is just inspiring all in itself, besides her glorious voice. this is by far one of her best recordings!

  • It's interesting to hear Fleming sing this (bomb!), and then compare it with Dorotha Roschmann, and hear how styles have changed for Mozart. This is very refined. The 2006 Salzburg Nozze sounds more raw (it's all like 3:20). And Kiri Te Kanawa was something of a combination of the two.

By the way, thank you Renee for laying waste to the idea that opera singers have to do these big, pointless gestures to be effective.
