Im graduating highschool this year and going to a high voltage lineman course at OSU in Oklahoma. Is learning to climb poles hard and could you guys give me any pointers that i could use to my advantage before i go to school next year? The top 10 in class get to choose where they do their internship and i want to be one of the top guys! Thanks!
We HAD to learn free climbing, we didn't have choice in the matter. Our old union guys made us go up and down with the strap on our side, and a buck squeeze, ha, we didn't even know what that was 'till the end of training! We did have safety harnesses on. Going up free climbing does build your confidence. Although we learned free handed, I still prefer to use my strap, 'cause I really do love myself.
@lwhite79 bro safety is the way to go. Thousands of experts with all the practice in the world have died while doing whatever it is that they are considered experts at. Safety is key
@bluepits24 freeclimbing is an art! if u dont like it dont do it! i try the bucksqueeze and i personally didnt like it! dont get me wrong i see your point! it sure helps a lot when you cut out! but the adrenaline its there no more!BUT IF THE COMPANY REQUIRES THAT I USE IT I SURE WILL! BE SAFE OUT THERE BRO!
@bluepits24 when i first read your comment i thought that you must be a utility puke or sorry telephone guy, anyways if you can't cut it in the line trade because you need a sorry bucksqueeze or jelco to climb a pole you need to go back to selling shoes or something you sorry f!!k people like you give the line trade a bad name idiot
i was thinking of going back into line work but been away from it for 15 yrs in which ive been doing commercial and industrial elect.just dont think my body could handle it at 45
well linemen in other countrys use different equipment ...we dont use so called gafs ..basically we use a carbon fiber pole that goes arouynd the pole and it has metal spikes that stick to the pole ..its easier more cofortable and safer that equipment used by US linemen.
First two climbers look really good....just practice looking up while climbing..last guy i was going to say he isnt going to make it...but looks like hes mabye into his first week in freeclimbing...hes stepping down....he needs to drop into it..which one are you?
Safety is different where ever you go. Watch my vids of me climbing... 100% tie off at all times. On the way up and down i use jelco pole strap so I cant fall!
just cause your a professional doesnt mean you won't slip......why bother with safety equipment at all....isnt it policy to climb with a lanyard....If I go up a tree I have a lanyard I use and a climbing rope.....
i prefer to free climb if ya cant climb without a jelco ya pry arent that good of a climber no confidence in yourself or your equipment
