Dick Clark is what makes him a great host. It's what also made him one of the best Pyramid players ever. I have to put him 1A & Billy Crystal 1B. It's too close to call between the two.
These were part of a syndication package that Channel 55 ran back in 1986 as part of their daytime programming. There are about 15 give or take of these that someone taped of tv then and saved them. This would be great on GSN giving folks to see what the early days were like on the Pyramid since little of the daytime run exists. I used to have the episode guide to all Bill Cullen's episodes and there were some great players on his version. The one I would like to see is when Garry Moore played.
This looks like it was taped from the original broadcast from station 55. Someone was very lucky to have a vcr 30 years ago. I wonder if this version will ever be seen on GSN? I don't think they have aired a single episode and it is rumored that they do exist. This was a weekly syndicated version that Bill Cullen hosted and was very well done.
They do exist...as was stated before, b/c syndicated shows were not @ the mercy of the network's recycling policies, virtually all syndie games of the 70s are still around.
My favorite version of the Pyyramid, Bill Cullen was his usual awesome self as a host. If wish GSN would air this version since episodes are reportedly known to exist in the CBS video library after they took over original syndicator Viacom.
Yes, "things on your face" should have been on the bottom row. However, "People named George" being at the top was even more misplaced. Having "people named George" in the second tier is a stretch, and it probably should have been in the bottom row.
I live on Long Island and believe it or not I have several episodes on VHS of the $25,000 Pyramid with host Bill Cullen. The tapes are from 1986...and still in good quality.
Notice after the $25,000 win, the camera kept taking constant shots of the Pyramid's crown that said "$25,000". This was before 1976 when the producers didn't use on-screen flashing dollar amounts, since the daytime show was a set $10,000 win at the time, despite the nighttime show having both $10,000 and $25,000 payouts.
When The $20,000 Pyramid began in 1976, on-screen flashing dollar amounts after a win was added since there were 3 possible payouts: $10,000, $15,000, and $20,000. The changes rolled over into the nighttime version as well. The constant shots of the Pyramid's crown after a $25,000 win no longer used afterwards, since the flashing "$25,000" on the screen made up for it.
Dick Clark is THE man! There is absolutely nothing he doesn't know or can't do. I hope he's been doing well since his shocking stroke a couple of years ago.
the masters for the $10,000 pyramid have long been destroyed by ABC. Thank God somehow a studio tape exists or a home recording. You will not see this in any bettter quality as this is all that exists.
Actually, this is from the syndicated $25K Pyramid hosted by Bill Cullen, for which the masters still exist in Viacom's library (as syndicated shows weren't @ the network's mercy when it came to matters like recycling tapes)...in fact, this is actually an off-air recording from a rerun that aired in 85-86.
This particular clip's video quality was so messed up and out of focus. The audio was okay though and I was able to recognize Dick's voice in the clip. Because of the distorted picture, the young woman's face and the winner's circle subjects were not easy to look at. Wherever the original master of this tape was, it was probably not kept in proper storage.
You are correct...as was previously explained, this is a rerun that aired on Long Island, NY indie WLIG (now WLNY) during their first year on the air...you can spot their ID @ about 2:35, followed by graphics for a "Watch 'N Win" contest they were having @ the time.
Mr. Clark would return to the hot seat for a week of the 2002 Donny Osmond hosted Pyramid, and would lead a player to $10,000 in one of the episodes there. Whether as host or as player, he is truly the master of the Pyramid.
I always like this earlier version of the theme song

The minute he said "Donut", you could see the person beginning to run toward the WC, because that was the definitive clue.

One would think that either Dick or Bill should hold the record for climbing the pyramid, and not Billy Crystal.

About the Paul Revere one, it's interesting because usually the role play one is the 2nd, rather than the 3rd in this case.

It's actually closer to 25 now, since a second batch of eps recorded off WLIG was discovered and circulated in late 07/early 08.

This isn't an orig. broadcast, it's a rerun from c. 85-86...@ the time Cullen's Pyramid orig. aired, WLIG had not yet signed on.

I think this version exists, considering that this station was able to even air it that late.

So I guess the same thing should be said to the $128,000 question, The Cheap Show, You Don't Say (Peck), .etc
Hondo20132 3 years ago
Yep...in fact, some stations reran $128K in the mid-80s.

So I guess some old-school SOTC exists after all! I thought only that one photo in that book existed.
