one of my all time favorite dead tunes, especially the faster versions and one of the funnest songs to play on guitar(fast version for a jolly good time, and the slow version for a great jam)
I much prefer their faster versions of this song, like here. It's a great song to play on the accoustic guitar and not too hard. Thank you the Dead for a great melody and lyrics.
When I find a new to me version of one of their songs it is even more beautiful than the last. Amazing to imagine that the next one will be even more beautiful.
Live — May 15, 1970 at Fillmore East in New York City. RIP jerry, the most influential musician and guitarist to me, even though I'm just discovering the Dead more than 15 years after his passing. Proud to love this band and to understand their brilliance
@Andis345 around 1970 seems about right. i saw more than a few shows around that time, but never an outdoor show till much later, so i definitely did not see this one, but American Beauty had just come out and they did not stray to far from studio version so it seems logical. the thing is they looked so young in the photo. I was 20 so i must have been that young too. sometimes it seems so long ago and sometimes it seems just yesterday.
I love how they can remember exactly the way they played a song years and years ago and play it perfectly. Especially after playing it hundreds of different ways (they're said to never have play a song the same way twice). They are truely the most talented and inspirational band to ever exist.
@D0oD0oBrain Improvisation is one of the great joys of playing this kind of music. It happens in blues as original blues players did not use charts, it is what jazz is all about, as i hear it dead members loved coltrane. In his book Phil Leash says that when asked to switch from trumpet to bass to play for the dead, Jerry just told him to learn his scales and only play an open string when you really mean it. the trick is to constantly improve -- not easy.
@deneff1 *they played this version during "this day in grateful dead history" today @ work and im pretty sure they said the date was 5/15/70. good ear!
Its Harpur College - Binghamton NY - Upstate Tudeloo! 5/2/1970 Dicks Picks Vol 8 - one of the best dick's picks, unless you ask my dick. he'll tell you any pussy is the best pick ;) - GD was all about love. It's not like that.
@pjautuvas umm no, i cant. they played FOTD acoustic sooo many times in 1970, so theres really no way to pinpoint an exact date. But from what I can hear, Tom Constanten is not playing on the track, so its sometime after 1/30/70.

Amazing...too bad that they didnt have this at Woodstock, bc it would have made a huge difference in their legacy there. We're DEAD! ;)
