@Englishtenor2 She is a mezzo, and Santuzza is a mezzo role. But many sopranos have appropriated the music for their own fach because they can't stand not to sing it.
Say what you will, Zajick saved a Met Aida last year by leaping to a high b flat in Act II, thus covering for the soprano who was in trouble. you keep the perfect vowels, give me a singer who truly knows her craft and offers a sound as exquisite as this.
all singers are different, and have to make certain modifications for placement, even among the same voice types, for exaple Jessye Norman and Deborah Voigt.... 2 excellent dramatic sopranos but have to modify their voices @ different points for placement.
Mmm...I'm not sure that this is the "right-est" piece for Dolora...some of those upper reaches of the phrase are written with a soprano in mind, which Ms. Zajick isn't. I'm not saying that it isn't good, mind you-- I'm saying that it's not her best. Consistent singing as always, though.
The conductor is Steven Mercurio, one of the most singer-friendly and chorus-friendly conductor I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Mr. Mercurio proves you don't need to be a despotic tyrant to be an excellent conductor.
I've admired Miss Zajick for many years now but I have ONE annoying little teeny tiny pet peeve about her.... "Innegiamuuuuu Signor Non e Mortuuuuu.... Innegiammuuu .... risortuuuuuu..." Has she ever sing an actual "O" vowel in her life?
She probably is, but sometimes when a certain note doesn't sit quite right in your range you have to modify the vowel to get the placement right. Lots of singers that I know learned to modify "O" toward "OOO", "i" toward "e", and "ah" more toward "uh". Tenors do it a LOT ( me included).
She must be doing something right. She is at the top of her craft and has been singing the most demanding repetoire for her voice type for 25 years!! I heard he sing this live in Chicago 3 years ago and she was awesome: musical, moving and she sang--as opposed to screaming the role the way some artist do it.
Passaggi well negotiated in here. Also, her higher notes came out with some squillo, which cut through the huge sound of orchestra & choir. She did breathe in odd moments, but gave us a powerful rendition: BRAVISSIMA!
Santuzza Is a soprano role... but many Many Mezzo's with a comfortable upper range sing it...

Unfortunately she hardly sings in Europe.
But she did Amneris in Berlin once and blew the house. She was simply stunning!

Brava!!! Her voice soars...floats...reaches your
heart and soul like a soothing sweet balm.
High and low notes are as perfect and powerful as the mid range ones and you know SHE is there.
Amazing voice.Food for the spirit....

Anyone else love how her voice just rides over the top of both the orchestra and the chorus? Brilliant.

i do!

I do, but what happened to the beginning of the chorus? That's the most glorious part of any opera chorus in opera history!

Zajick is no joke, she can do whatever she wants with her voice, and trust me she can take it all the way up to the F above high C.

Technically superb. Amazing openness of sound and balanced registers with a completely smooth and seamless transition.

I like Zajick very much in many roles, yet her Santuzza is not that much...
Her breath control is not great, and together with obvious register-breaks it prevents her from fine phrasing.
Still a big voice with a good range.
