For many women, if they didn't have family members in neighboring towns, their only choices when being widowed with children was to quickly try and find a man who'd marry a woman with kids, or just send them away to orphanages because they didn't have the money to support their family anymore because about 90% of the money came from their husbands. It's just the way it was. :\
