My family made these stars as ornaments for our tree when I was growing up.
We also made a small pin hole in one of the points put an ornament hook in it then dipped it in hot wax, hung to dry them decorated our tree.
Thank you for doing these videos. I have been wanting to teach my grand children but could not remember the steps. Once you get the hang of it it goes quickly.
Thanks again for bringing back a childhood memory. Quiltylady48
THIS IS SOOO COOL. i had 2 watch it like 3 times but i finally got it :) also, just to let you know it doesn't rly matter what size it is bcuz i had a strip 3/4 in. wide and lik 24 in. long and it worked purfectly fine. but thnx 4 the measurements anyhoo ! :)
If you (or a child) are having trouble getting the paper to go through the proper places, putting a paper clip on the end of the paper can help you guide it through where it needs to go. Just a thought/experience.
this is such a wonderful star...I found it better to use ribbon 3/4 inch wide in wonderful shimmery colors...I also did not trim off the end flush but left a tiny bit of the different color showing out...looks really nice that way!
Thank you! Watching it was much more easier than reading it, thank you for the hands on approach! Mine did not end up looking as good as yours, but with more practice (and watching your video a couple more times!) it will look as good as your did! Thanks once more!
I have tried and tried, and I still don't get cones. I am using a bond paper designed to make these stars. I give up. I am going to see if there is anything else I can do with the paper, and if not, it's the recycle bin. Life is too short for this kind of frustration.

@CavalierHandler it helps to make a sharp crease as you start the loop for the "cone", it is kind of a quarter fold UNDER, crease nicely, then continue the loop through as she shows - this make one edge of the "cone" sharp and the rest a nice curve, and it stands up better.
My uncle taught me how to do this a few years ago but I forgot a lot of the steps. Your directions were very helpful. The use of 4 different colors is also helpful. Thanks for posting.
Wow.That looks so easy, but right now I'm getting my Dad to get 17 IN. paper or more for me.I'm sure mine will turn out terrific!Because it's so simple and easy.Never thought it would be like that. Thanks,so much! You have WONDERFUL,tutorials!<3 Blue :)
After making that "flat" star, you can go for the next step and make a 3D-Star. I've made a video, called "Big Paper Star" (look at my user-page), where my father and I make one, if you will like to see :)
I don't know where you got the name "German" from? I don't know how normal they really are, but we (me and my family) make a lot of those every Christmas and I know a lot other people that also know how to make them.
Anyway. You can buy packets of those in Denmark, where they already are folded (in pairs of four), so it make it a lot easier. In those packets there also is a guide of how to make the paper stars.
There are a lot of diagrams out there that refer to this model as the "German Star", however you are absolutely correct in the real name. I'm sure someone called it that because they assumed the name was in German and decided to call it a German star for memorization's sake.
Thanks for putting this on youtube! I made a german star when I was in sixth grade before Christmas and I really want to make one this year but I remember that it takes awhile to get the hang of it so i figured i'd get a head start. =)
I'm glad you're trying it. It's gets easier after you make a few! I had a really difficult time learning it. I had to watch several different videos to figure it out, because I couldn't see what they were doing. Then I had a hard time getting used to pulling the pieces through to make the points. At first I didn't pull hard enough, then I was pulling too hard and breaking them. It just takes practice.

Thank you! Before your great video, I have gone through about strips of paper and learned new cuss words.
My final ones don't turn into cones, so I am going to try again. Thank you!

@CavalierHandler ~ I'm glad this helped. I made a bunch of them one day and I would sometimes pull the strips too hard and they would break.
