  • It is currently setup to run on a mixture of Diesel and natural gas. It can run on straight diesel, waste motor oil, virgin or used vegetable oil, used hydraulic oil and a few other things.

We are not off grid and it is only used as backup and does not charge batteries. We do not backfeed the grid (we have solar and wind to do that). These engines are hard to find anymore as they have been banned by the EPA. Cost engine if you can find one 2500 gen head 400 everything else you build.

  • I think this is the coolest damn thing I have ever seen. What do you run it on.....fuel? Are you off grid because of it? Do you just use power as it is running or do you use it to charge a battery bank and feed electricity back to the grid....so cool, where and how much to get/cost of these motors? Tks

  • This is a GAST 4am motor. you can find them on ebay and other places. I bought this one used at a surplus center for 25 dollars.

  • Very cool setup. Where might I find one of those air starters? I've never seen something like that before..

  • love your genset and videos, so educational!

seen these engines (Anands i think) used to power homemade trucks in India (called jugaad, or jugadh), and also seen similar ones on giricos in Brazil, and these listers do a good job of being power units for road vehicles too!

only i don't know if they're 6hp ones, or stronger.

  • I always thought that radiators required airflow over them to cool efficiently?

Does this reach an operating temperature and stay constant or keep increasing temp and eventually requiring a shutdown after continuous use?

  • There is an 120vac electric fan mounted on the top side of the radiator using a thermocouple on the water outlet to start and stop the fan. The thermostat in the engine is a 195 degree F stat. Remember this engine is only 6hp and the radiator is a very large aluminum radiator designed for a 500hp racing engine. With the radiator at that angle there is a fair amount of air being sucked through via convection even with the fan off. Fan only runs is outside temp is over 85 degrees F.

  • What do you do if you can't run the air compressor because you have a power cut?

Very very nice engine, by the way, runs as sweet as a nut.

  • @sdavies45

My compressor/air system consists of a 100gallon tank that is always full. If the pressure in the tank drops under 90 psi the compressor automatically comes on and refills the tank. If the power goes out i know i have at least 90 psi in the tank and that can start the engine many times.

  • 4KV?? Or KVA??

  • @isaacu That was a mistake. It is 4kva not 4kv

  • Carl,

I loved the vid. I have a metro 16/1 under rebuild. Curious as to what vehicle the radiator came from as well as the low pressure cap.

What is the stroke on the air cylinder you are using. This is so slick. No dead batteries or toothed plates to upset the balance!

    Vern

  • @sumosamuri

The cap is a standard automotive radiator cap that i modified by removing the bottom portion of the cap so if any pressure at all tires to build it just go up the overflow tube to the tank mounted above the radiator. The radiator is one that I took out of my 69 camaro because i need a bigger radiator for the car. I think the stroke is about 2" on that air cylinder but you don't need even that much.

  • Awesome mods

  • your radiator cap should always be the highest point in the system. you should weld a blanking plate there instead, so someone doesn't take it off and spill coolant everywhere.

  • there is a beauty to these engines, they' are unique machines!

you start em up, and you know they're there, puffing and working long days cheaply, reliably and without fuss. if that ain't enough to like em, nothing is!

  • excellent job!

  • Hey old timer, you haven't answered any of the comments in months.

    Hope you're doing alright..

If you're still around just say something to let us know

  • Well I am still around and the engine is running fine. Only had to use it 2 times this winter during some power outages.

  • What does this engine have a governor??? i tought hit and miss engines only had a governor!! ???

  • yes it has a govenor

  • Comment removed

  • @SthealthRaider

This is a diesel engine and does not have a carb.

  • so only diesel engines have governors??

  • @SthealthRaider It is not a hit and miss

  • i am wanting to buy one of these engines, what site do i go to to buy one? please reply

  • I bought my from Gotts Cove Marine in Maine. I don't know if these engines are still being imported to the united states due to EPA regs.

  • Amazing work, man!!!

  • I love the farting air start!

  • that is awesome i would love to have that as a backup generator

  • very very nice setup!! what is the fuel consumtion

    per hour in liters?

  • it uses about 1 liter per hour when running on diesel at about 2kw output. When running Duel fuel diesel/natural gas it uses about 6 oz of diesel and about 2 cubic feet of natural gas.

  • What parts make up the air starter rig? i cant seem to find an air starter like that one for my listeroid...

  • The air motor is a GAST 4am air motor should be pretty easy to find on EBAy. The rest is just a generic air cylinder and some flat steel.

  • this is really neat! did you set this up your self?

  • Yes, I put it together from parts i had lying around.

  • whats this engine used for?

  • it is used as a backup generator for my home. We sometimes get power outages in winter storms.

  • boy i hear you on the power outages but can you power your whole house with one of these metros ?

  • It can pretty much keep everything running that we need during a power outage within reason. We can't run our central air conditioning and avoid unnecessary loads but we can get buy with the microwave coffee maker tv computers etc. We have a gas stove and gas hot water so those large loads are not necessary.

  • Great setup and very nice video, thanks for posting it. What would the entire setup cost now?

  • 17.5:1 If you are talking about the engine, in the area of 1200 dollars and 400 or so for the generator head.

  • compression ratio? Thanks for the plate closeup. What do they sell for new these days?

  • Found this video by accident whilst looking at

WVO submissions. I'm most impressed and inspired

to do similar for household backup power. I happened upon a small used but rather clean Farrymann which by what I've read might yield

a bit under 4KW with the right alternator.

That should take care of the fridge and furnace and a few lights. Certainly what you have is

a different class of machine but I am none the less inspired seeing what can be done.

  • I'd love to install the exact air start for my Lister. I've got the Gast motor covered but what is the pneumatic cylinder size/model and what size compressor is necessary to run the show?

Also, what is your Lister mounted to?

    Looks smooth.

    Do you have a website?

Thanks for sharing the info. Looks like your pretty well set up.

  • I don't have a model number on the cylinder but it is pretty small being about 1.5" diameter x 4" long. I suspect that any small cylinder would work fine, I am only feeding about 20 psi to the cylinder and full line pressure (130 psi or so) to the air motor. I am using a 5hp Sears air compressor with a 20 gallon tank. The frame is constructed out of 4"x8" I beam 3/8" thick bolted on top of 8x8 timber.

    carl

  • Are you an engineer of any type by chance?

  • No, just a hands on type guy that has been working on anything mechanical, electrical, HVAC and Plumbing all of my life. If you check out some of my other videos you will see some of my more interesting recent projects.

    Carl.

  • That's awesome! This is definately going on the to do list for mine. Thanks for sharing!

  • WannaBee,

The air motor is pretty common and is manufactured by GAST. You can look on Ebay and find them used for under 100 dollars. I would not get the smaller 2am but the 4am or larger will work fine. The friction wheel was one that i had laying around i just had to re-bore it. You can get friction wheels from McMaster carr.

    Carl.

  • Nice work!!!

I am thinking about using an auto starter and friction wheel as an electric starter.

The air start looks much cleaner.

Were can I get a 4AM air moter starter? Did you have to make the friction wheel?

    Thank you for the Video

    Wanna BEE farmer

  • Nice work I followed your link here from the Lister Forum.....
