people who say holdsworth seems like he s practicing all the time , or h is playing is sloppy really have no clue what s going on .. there are only a few notes from the harmony that the player can exploit to create a 'beautiful sound' for the listener , however playing at such blazing high speeds, players like holdsworth tend to use a lot of outside notes that sound amazing if you really follow the whole melodic phrase, which is difficult for an average listener .. this is musicians music
I love hearing this played by greg howe, I've been bias up until this point I've never really liked any versions of Allen's until now he's awesome but only at pace in my opinion when he goes fast it sounds sloppy.
Nah Allan is not sloppy when he goes fast. Have you ever seen a written tab of his playing. He's completely on time. All the players who played with him says he has a phenomenal sense of time.
@PutItAway101 true... although you cannot leave aside the late Shawn Lane.. a powerful Jedi he was... But then again, master Holdsworth is now aged and his technique is only matched by his advance knowledge and his vast and rich improv communication skills..
@KenobiM11 I've always thought that the difference between someone who's just good and someone who's a genius is that when the "just good" guy comes up with something, you can kind of see where he's coming from, and even kid yourself that you could've thought of that, but when the genius comes up with something it's like "where the f@#$ did that even come from? This guy's brain is just wired up differently to the rest of the planet!" . Holdsworth's knowledge is definitely of the genius kind.
The list of people Allan has played with is amazing. Even noting just some of the drummers is impressive - Joel Taylor (I think I hear Allan giving him a shout out on this video), Gary Novak, Vinnie Colaiuta, Chad Wackerman, Gary Husband, Bill Bruford, Tony Williams. Wow.
Someone should do a brain scan on musicians like him and see what's up. Incredible facility with shapes ,sounds, and structure. Some knew what they did by taking music and P.E out of the ghettos. Most of the kids have more musical ability then most adults . Alan's hero is John Coltrane. Enough said!
I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I've heard 4 different versions of Proto Cosmos with Allan playing and on each and every one of them I cannot stand the playing of Chad Wackerman. It's soooooo lacking in dynamics and finesse. And on each the mic'ing of the drums has been atrocious.
I know he is a 'respected' drummer, but I know what I like and it ain't that racket he's producing.
He "birthed" a bunch of clones immediately. I heard a few live..I didn't try to remebr their names.Same techniques and even many lines. same like the Benson and Django clones.
any Allan vids are keepers, but it's interesting to see how the lack of a keyboard to provide the backing chordal "foundation" while Allan's soloing kinda hurts the overall performance ... pretty awful audio quality, too, but we can't have everything :)
@metaljazzblues23 -- thanks for your response ... "critic" simply means someone offering observations, and I both praised (as I always) do this Allan material and lamented the fact that without keyboard support, the beautiful changes of his composition don't come across as well ... his playing aside, I've felt that AH's writing and arranging didn't get enough mention, so easily overshadowed by his amazing playing
I saw a picture of Allan holding a red Charvel with 2 twin reverbs behind him, exactly like this. Not necessarily the typical fusion rig but I'm sure he sounded pretty damn good.

@murdukwatson You're kidding, right? There's probably no other guitarist in the world in such total control at high speed as Holdsworth is
