I just played Revs! Qualified 5th in 1:31.6, which was my first lap, only managed to crash the rest of the 10 minute session. I won the race (5 laps, novice) after taking the lead before the first corner. My fastest lap was 1:28.0. No bonus point though, Johnny Turbo went round in 1:27.8.
I only once tried the chicane during the race in 5th gear, but nearly lost it. Should I manage it I think I could get near 1:27.
Qualifying and race both with the same wing settings of 38-32.
@wettingfeld Cool a real 64 :) I tried to drive with your settings. But it did not work for me, I turn into the corners to early all the time. I drive much faster with lower wingsettings. I did a 1.25.9 lap at qualifying, with wings 20 14, the car is very fast, but very unstable with that settings.
Ohh, I want to try Revs on a real C64 with a Tac2-joystick :)
@wettingfeld Good laptime, Well done! My brother used to to have extremly understearing settings. Beleive it was something like 24/12 or something. But it was totaly impossible for me to use.
I played this for 6 months straight every night after school when I was a kid, I can still remember my best lap time on Silverstone, it was 124.6. Not sure how that compared to anyone else since there was no internet to compare times :)
@greenfoam I played this game very much too. Don't remember my best lap , think it was faster than 1.25 something. Can't get near that anymore. I need a real c64 and a Tac2 :)
@Koffe74 I should have my fastest lap noted down somewhere, but I think it was either in the 1:22 or 1:23. I had a different setup for qualifying, which wasn't stable enough to race in, but it gave you a chance to put in a quick lap.
The key was the chicane, which you had to take at full speed for a good time/race result. You had to time this to perfection or you'd be launched of the track!
@wettingfeld wow if it was 1.22 that's really fast. I know if I had low downforce it was really scary to drive. I don't really remember which my fastest was. Something I think I remember is 1.23.6 . But when I drive now I think that it is totaly impossible. But I think it is easier on a real C64 and a Tac2-joystick.
Yes I remember that I took the chicane at full speed sometimes. That made me really scared exited and scared sometimes. :)
@Koffe74 I'll see if I can dig up my fastest time. I used to write them down + the wing settings I used. The chicane was a scary experience, same feeling here! And a terrible feeling if you're leading the race and the chicane launches you to your doom!
When I played many years ago I put the second joystick on the floor, allowing me to press its fire button with my foot. It has the same effect as holding the spacebar: it made your steering wheel much quicker, sometimes useful!
@wettingfeld the wing setting would be interesting to know. I think I used 20/16 at races. At Qualifying I often used lower settings , but it often ended with a crashed car. But I don't think it is possible to get a really good lap with the 20/16 setting, but it was a very reliable setting. That thing you did with the second joystick was a smart thing.
@Koffe74 Call me a cheat and a liar, but at least I'm honest about it. It turns out my fastest lap is 1:24.6 with wings settings of 28 25. Brand Hatch is 1:25.9 with 39 37. Also I had 3 pole positions at professional level on Silverstone and 1 victory.
Damn, I have a growing urge of setting up my C64 and put in some laps! In fact I recently did this, but I was very crap. Although I didn't spend much time on Revs, mostly swapping disks, looking for lost memories.
@wettingfeld I trust you. I think I wrote some times down to. But I don't believe I can find them. I am very impressed that you could drive around Brands Hatch. It was extremly diffucult track.
I didn't try to drive so much on Pro level, but I know it was very diffucult, so I am impressed.
Your wingsettings was a bit higher than I used on Silverstone. Mayby it's better.
I have still have my brothers C64, but something is wrong with the 1541. It would be nice to get it to work.
@Koffe74 Brands Hatch is near impossible. That is what forced me to invent the joystick-on-the-floor trick as there is one corner that's impossible to take unless you can move the steering wheel faster. Even so surviving one lap is very difficult, let alone do a whole race.
You can often find 1541 drives on eBay and such sites. I have a number of disk drives. I was using a 1570 and I thought my disks started going bad, but when I hooked up a 1541 they worked again!
Nostalgi!
So much better than gran turismo 4

@wettingfeld Good job! Did you run it on a real C64 or an emulator?
I will try your wingsettings. I have never tried it with so high wing-setting.

@Koffe74 I tried your settings, which needed getting some used to, and managed a 1:26.1!
Here in The Netherlands it's very easy to get a C64. They are often sold as complete sets with disk drives, joysticks and a bunch of games.
I'd really love to get my hands on a pile of NEW 5.25" disks.
