  • I just can't get over how the God and Creator of the universe would send His most precious possession, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die in MY stead for MY sins!!

  • @ProtoSteward - Thanks for the advice. Wise counsel not to respond to one passing comment in a long thread of argument.

  • Not 19th century pietism. It was written by Charles Wesley in the 18th century. It's a Methodist classic.

  • @scribblerm

I could be wrong, but I think you walked into the middle of an argument without realizing it.

For my part, I love this hymn, but most of the time (depending on my mood), I prefer the Red Mountain Church version. They've done a great job updating the old hymns. If you prefer this one, cool. To each his own.

  • This is one of my favorite hymns. I am glad to see some of Soundforth's music on You Tube -- makes it easier to share with folks online.

  • This is one of my favorite hymns. I am glad to see some of Soundforth's music finally on You Tube!

  • Thank you for uploading this hymn, so Christ honoring and God be glorified. Let us all keep our heritage and most of all giving God the glory, and not compromising to the people or churches who became contemporary and blinded by Satan through their styles of music and worship as well. Let us all be in one accord of praising God in grand old hymns of the faith that stirs our soul with joy and gladness. God bless you.

  • in these days where rock music has penetrated the christian churches, it is a great blessing indeed to hear this kind of music which honors God and stirs the soul. thanks for posting. may you post more hymns of this type for the Glory of God. God bless you!!!

  • I strongly agree with that. Nowadays there are lots of Chuches you could hardly find that still stands in the fundamentals of the faith and particularly singing/playing Christ honoring music and grand old hymns of the faith. Contemporary music has ruined many Fundamental Churches, even some "Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches" became contemporary in their worship services. So sad why are those churches had turned away from our Heritage and right way of worship.

  • I like this hymn.

But I like other styles, too.

So sad that many Christians cannot respect other styles of music.

So sad, too, that most Independent Fundamental Baptsist churches are more attached to uphiodling their cultural heirtage rather than living out the gospel in the real world.

I grew up in those churches. My brother-in-law pastors one of those churches. But is sad to see so many good hearts trapped by bad traditions.

  • Other Christians know more than you do. But an arrogant and worldly "Christian" cannot come to the knowledge of the truth because they love the world. They refuse correction, because they want to protect their idol.

Do you think you are a Christian?

    2 Cor. 13:15

  • Other Christians, yes. But not you.

  • Talk of arrogance, I am quite sure of your ignorance on this subject by your stubborn and prideful resistance at correction and your coming to this site to offer your ignorance as though it had some merit in the truth of holy service to God. You are a worldly deceived person, saved? I doubt it.

  • Pot. Kettle. Black.

  • Bad traditions of what? Can you further define that term? Because once you say "living out the gospel in the real world" That means you just want fundamental Christians to live with compromise, and apostasy. That is what the real world is. So that is why the Bible plainly teach that be ye separate. You know what, I'd rather stand in the old fashioned way of preaching, singing and the old fashion way of worshipping God and the old fashioned way of winning souls to Christ. Thanks

  • There are older ways of worshipping God than the relics of 19th Century pietism. Want to give them a try?

No? Then maybe older is sometimes better, and sometimes not.

Even this hymn was new once.

Living out the Gospel in the real world is the opposite of apostasy. And it is very idfferent from your brand of cultural idolatry.

  • Jer 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

  • He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

    ...But you do not listen.

  • Some time ago we gave up all contemporary "Christian" music and listen to the Soundforth Singers almost but not quite exclusively. we want to honor our Lord with music that uplifts the spirit and does nothing for the flesh.

  • That's a good testimony.

  • Because a healthy diet always relies on the same thing, day after day, right?

    Nice.

  • you think a healthy diet consists of good with poison?

    Smart.

  • Smug arrogant nonsense.

  • Glad you recognize your foolish pride and ignorance, but that is not enough you need to repent.

  • Oh gee. You can't even be honest, can you?

You are arrogant, foolish, & ignorant. Instead of just appreciating this beautiful hymn, you have to tear down music the blesses Christians far wiser & more knowledgable than you will ever be, given your stubborn idolatry & malice.

Your smug arrogant nonsense will bring you pain. It will not bless your friends & family. You seem to have no grace in your life.

  • Coming from a fool like yourself that is the nicest thing you could say.

  • The irony is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

  • I did say only good things about this hymn and only replied to your perverted and sarcastic "I like funeral music remark when you FIRST commented to me. Maybe you should not show your world loving ways to everyone when you don't want to be rebuked. Of course a fool has no delight in correction. I have been corrected that is why I listen to this music. You are the one not receiving correction thinking any music that calls itself "Christian" is. You are blind on purpose.

  • "I did say only good things about this hymn..."

    Untrue.

You implied that others forms of Christian music exalt "the flesh" rather "the spirit." We got the hint.

    "You are blind on purpose."

You don't know enough about me to make that judgment.

  • "Maybe you should not show your world loving ways to everyone when you don't want to be rebuked."

"World-loving ways"? You don't know enough about me to make that judgment.

Oh. You think anyone who likes different kinds of music loves the world? Interestingly, there is no Scriptural basis for that claim.

"I have been corrected that is why I listen to this music."

Corrected by a blind leader of the blind? The Law yields only death.

  • That is what the children of Israel said concerning manna. They displeased the Lord then just like you are doing now. Yes when it comes from God it is good, the problem is you can't tell what good is. I'll bet anything you are a new version reader too.

  • "I'll bet anything you are a new version reader too."

Hmph. I read new *translations* -- if they are careful translations of the best manuscripts. Any diligent student of the Word should. Newer translations have been produced utitlizing many times more manuscript evidence that was available in 1611.

That probably doesn't matter to you because you can't tell what good is. You're too busy idolizing the fossilized remains of rural 1940s cultural.

  • It is quite disheartening to hear you two bickering like this. I love this song (among quite a few other sacred numbers, namely from SoundForth) for its truth and how it glorifies God and came to this particular video expecting something a bit better. What a shock to see this topic up for debate AGAIN. The worst thing about the whole issue is the division it creates.

  • what a beautiful conservative hymn :)

Satan has confused many christians' minds; they need to be reached with the fact that their "music" is only pleasing them, not God.

We need to choose music that glorifies God and NOT man :)

The bible says to sing praise to the Lord.

It does not say, choose music that you enjoy :P

anyways, I love conservative music and I abhor any other kind.

thanks for this video. Keep up the good work.

  • Thank you for your comment . . . I'm certainly thankful for the Mercy of God!

  • This is an amazing song! i do not understand your argument that "We need to choose music that glorifies God and NOT man :)" I would say that this also glorifies man. Either all music glorifies man to a certain extent or none of it does. The simple fact that music is performed draws attention to Man.

  • Yeah, I love funeral music, too.

  • Thanks a lot!

  • I think very few are prepared to give up the world's music for this kind of depth. I liked the world's music like most, but this song represents a purity in words and music that, to me, expose the secular rhthms for their attention to the flesh.

  • She stood like one lost in thought, and the band, supposing her embarrassed, played the prelude over a second and a third time. Then with clasped hands she stepped forward and sang with deep emotion:

"Depth of mercy, can there be

    Mercy still reserved for me?"

This put a sudden stop to the performance; not a few were impressed, though many scoffed. The change in her life was as permanent as it was singular. Soon after she became the wife of a minister of the Gospel

  • Reading and re-reading the hymn led her to give her heart to God and to resolve to leave the stage. The manager of the theater pleaded with her to continue to take the leading part in a play which she had made famous in other cities, and finally he persuaded her to appear at the theater. As the curtain rose the orchestra began to play the accompaniment to the song which she was expected to sing.

  • That's a very good testimony. :)

  • An actress in a town in England, while passing along the street, heard singing in a house. Out of curiosity she looked in through the open door and saw a number of people sitting together singing this hymn. She listened to the song, and afterwards to a simple but earnest prayer. When she went away the hymn had so impressed her that she procured a copy of a book containing it.

  • ah...what a beauty! never thought i would find this hymn on youtube... ah....... do you know the story behind this song? if not, just sing this while reading this:

  • Thank you to whoever placed this video on here. This is the language of a broken sinner, an inside look at our thoughts. I wonder how strange this must seem to someone who hasn't humbled themselves before their God.

  • isn't this a wonderful hymn brother? doesn't this beat any of the pop sold to us "christian" by any artist in our day and age... any! i learned this song while i was in the pop movement, yes i was there... cademon call butchered it and i knew they didn't come up with the lyrics. Come to find out this was not theirs and that it came from a man who KNEW God intimately- Charles Wesley
