I haven't heard about the rebate, nor the $250,000 number, but I do know many small business owners file their business income as their personal income. As a result, we will shrink the amount of money these small business owners can reinvest in their business. That means, among many other arguments against this raise in taxes, fewer people can be hired and the economy will hurt. The top 10% of earners in our population pay 80% of the personal taxes. Should they pay more?

Raising taxes is not the answer, never will be, more responsibility is.

Good point. On the one hand, this "bailout" is socialism because taxpayers and the government have a stake in banks. On the other hand, the bailout is only a loan which banks must repay within five years to avoid stiffer rates and/or fees; I'm not sure which. The idea behind the bailout is to get us through a very tough patch and return to capitalism, albeit with greater regulation. Essentially, I agree with short term intervention to prevent catastrophe which will allow long term growth.

The windfall profits tax she used looked at what oil prices should be based on inflation from a base rate created during Carter's Admin. The reserves belong to you and I as taxpayers and companies had not earned the abnormally huge $/barrel profits from our resources. The profits were a result of the economic upcycle.

After 9/11 I did a lot of research about that region of the world and realized how long and deep tensions ran. Their governments were not functioning properly and were potential threats to the region and us. Ramadi is in Anbar. So is Fallujah. I have read reports from civilians and military men and women in the province. Is it possible that things have changed since your last tour? Is it possible that while you were in Anbar along the Syrian border you may not have seen other things happening in one of the largest regions in Iraq? I would say the exact opposite is true. I don't know about you, but I am not rich. Lucky for me there are rich people out there who will give me a job...and a paycheck. If that rich guy gets taxed more, then he isn't giving me anymore jobs. I don't disagree that millions will receive a tax break under Obama, but I do know that taxing the wealthy will indirectly cut into my pockets..and yours...and anyone else who is not self employed.

...and if you do own a small business and your business happens to earn over $250,000, well you will be directly affected. The answer is not to cut taxes for the masses and expect the wealthy to pick up the tab, the answer is to cut spending. That is the fundamental difference between Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin. The dems wanna get in our pockets and spend more, McCain wants to reign in spending and cut taxes for everyone. It just makes more sense.

No, the truth is McCain wants to give 4.4% in tax cuts to people making 2.87 million a year, and 0.5% in tax to people like me in the middle class.

As opposed to Obama's plan of encouraging inflation and unemployment as a result of his tax hike during the worst financial crisis experienced in 70 something years? As opposed to congressional democratic leaders' plan to create an additional stimulus package aimed at small businesses? Don't get it twisted, you and I want the same result on a lot of issues we just have different means to an end. You want more govt. intervention, I don't.

Good point. On the one hand, this "bailout" is socialism because taxpayers and the government have a stake in banks. On the other hand, the bailout is only a loan which banks must repay within five years to avoid stiffer rates and/or fees; I'm not sure which. The idea behind the bailout is to get us through a very tough patch and return to capitalism, albeit with greater regulation. Essentially, I agree with short term intervention to prevent catastrophe which will allow long term growth.

I would call that appropriate. I believe the crude oil price rose to such high levels because the futures market for crude saw an influx of stipulators driving up the price. The windfall profits tax she used looked at what oil prices should be based on inflation from a base rate created during Carter's Admin. The reserves belong to you and I as taxpayers and companies had not earned the abnormally huge $/barrel profits from our resources. The profits were a result of the economic upcycle.

Im not rich either, and I guess you just have a lot more optimism than I do for the people up top that are, because lucky is the last word I would use to describe the job market for folks like me (hard-working college graduates with above average GPAs who struggle to find a decent-paying job) because unemployment levels are sky high and people are being laid off like never before. Jobs are being sent overseas for cheap labor and the corporate hot shots reap the benefits.

Folks like me, however, dont see a dime. And as for what you said about how taxing the wealthy will indirectly cut into my pockets, I would say the exact opposite is true. Under McCains plan, folks like me would see an average of -$320 in tax cuts, compared to -$1050 under Obamas plan. Given the choice, Ill take the latter and MORE THAN TRIPLE what McCain proposes. I understand the point you were trying to make, but you are obviously just more optimistic about the people I find corrupt.

Im not going to support McCains policy on the whim that some rich person will take a liking to me and offer me a great job. Im willing to risk an INDIRECT cut into my pockets if it means I get a more than triple DIRECT cut to my taxes. It just makes more sense.

And by your math alone you will get a mere $730 more under Obama. That same check will also go to people that did not pay in to the tax pool.
Now you complain about a decent paying job, but I am certain that your annual review will yield a higher raise then the $730 check you receive. Obama will give you that check, but also tax your boss. Because of that $700k increase he now outsourced your job and you are left with your vote and $730!
With an above average GPA I would expect more from you.

I guess I should point out that I'm not basing my vote solely on Obama's tax plan. Having said that, I'm sorry I don't meet your expectations, but I'm really not out to get your approval. The point I was making in my original comment was that the majority of Americans will receive greater tax cuts from Obama's plan. You can debate it any way you want, but the numbers speak for themselves. I would be more than happy to receive a "mere" $730 additional cut over that of what McCain proposes.

That is an aspect of the war that, in all honesty, I struggle with. Not necessarily spending "my tax money on our falling economy" but that a trillion dollars could be better spent (education, healthcare, etc). What I tell myself is that I believe the middle east can become a safe and incredible part of this world as well as a destination for vistors from the world over. I don't know if we will succeed, Dems are rallying, but I want to keep trying to help that region achieve peace and liberty.

Adam, I am not sure how old you are but I am only 25. I can't remember a time when the middle east was truly peaceful. After 9/11 I did a lot of research about that region of the world and realized how long and deep tensions ran. Their governments were not functioning properly and were potential threats to the region and us. As audacious as it may seem, President Bush believes that region can function better and align itself with the rest of the peaceful world.

That is true, you cannot force peace on people, but people will usually, when given the freedom to choose, choose peace over anarchy. The Anbar Awakening is evidence of that. Odierno and Petraeus are leveraging, with measured success, that movement. Maliki has been taking action against both Shia and Sunni outlaws. The Iraq government is generating a surplus and will be able to infuse that money into their infrastructure. We have countered an insurgency in record time, let's finish the job!

They are not choosing freedom, they are choosing Islamic Theocracy. Its nice that you mention Anbar. I lived there for a year. Most of my time was spent on the Syrian border. I could give a rats ass what the news or McCain are saying; we are not winning there. Anbar is the largest, and most dangerous of the provinces in Iraq. Al Qaim went through 3 mayors in almost 3 months. Because each was killed. This "Anbar Awakening" is BS.

I am extremely grateful for your service to our nation. I have not been to Anbar and don't discount what you experienced, but all my research points to a different truth today. I may be way off because I have not seen this for myself, but, based on the credibility of my sources, I am going to stand with my previous statement. Further, Iraq is not becoming an Islamic Theocracy...at least it hasn't during Bush's tenure and would not with McCain in the oval office, under Obama I am not so sure.

Have you ever noticed that there are no reporters that 'report' from Anbar? You may see the occasional reporter, but for the most part they are all stuck in the Green Zone. I would see reporter all the time while i was in Baghdad and while in Ramadi. But during the 7 months in Al Qaiam we saw none. You think that could have something to do with what get reporter? I would encourage you to find a copy of Iraqs constitution. Theocracy it is.

Ramadi is in Anbar. So is Fallujah. I have read reports from civilians and military men and women in the province. Is it possible that things have changed since your last tour? Is it possible that while you were in Anbar along the Syrian border you may not have seen other things happening in one of the largest regions in Iraq? As for the Iraq constitution, been there, read that, and I still contend that Iraq is not an Islamic Theocracy.

Im well aware that Ramadi is in Al Anbar. I lived in the orchard of the palace for 3 months, living out of a 13 ton tracked APC. Respectfully, you either didn't read it or you didn't understand it. Article 2:
The political system is republican, parliamentary, democratic and federal.
1. Islam is a main source for legislation.
-a. No law may contradict Islamic Standards

I pointed out Ramadi as being located in the al Anbar province because you said there were no reporters in Anbar, but then you stated you saw reporters all the time in Ramadi.
Read the Preamble
It is Article 1 (not 2) that states:
The Republic of Iraq is a(n)...independent federal state...Its system of government is republican..representative...Parliamentary...democratic.
You quoted Article 2 partially. Read B and C too.
Then define theocracy.
That is my understanding of this debate.

I think off the bat the preamble has a lot of religion in it; but so does our preamble to our Constitution. When you look at the overall message you see no Islamic Theocracy, you see a people who together have decided to honor the social contract that we honored in 1776 and are just now achieving. When I read the Constitution I read it with a sense of the overall message so that each piece fits in context and does its part to strike a lasting balance and create liberty in a strong nation.

I think at this moment, you could make both arguments based solely on the text of the Constitution IF you ignored the fact that they define themselves as a republic AND the turn of events since Petraeus. I even believe it would be possible for Iraq to become a Theocracy given the fragility of the situation. At this moment the course is not in that direction and we will know as time progresses whether progress will continue. We needed centuries, let's give them a few more years.
