  • absolutely necessary

  • This plucks my heartstrings. It's so beautiful, I thank you Joe!

  • Very nice video

    Thanks dear friend

    Juanita

  • Well, we know that there are 9 people out there with no taste in music whatsoever...

  • @teamangel1 Heath Ledger is who led me here.

  • Joe Henry is good but doesn't know everything. When one disregards superstitions and myths and the sometimes creepy dogma of the Bible (stone and kill kids who talk back to parents? Jesus says to condemn forever those who can't believe in god due to intelligent skepticism?) One can really evolve and love..

  • mikeczzz, thanks again. through mr. piltch , i have found holly cole. world wide web indeed. could be a busy music day.

  • many thanks mikeczzz. as a stumbling bassist for twenty five years, i'm in awe when i see a master. thanks again.

  • Love this song, first saw it on TCM. I had to find it. It was my introduction to Joe Henry. Wonderful bass work here too. Plays it like its a Stratocaster.Anyone know the bassist's name?

  • The bass player is David Piltch.

  • @bensdadfrank the bassists name is Marvin

  • @gbfootball04 No it's not, is David Piltch

  • @GoofyBCN no its not stupid

  • @GoofyBCN Please forgive my son, as the name Marvin is an inside joke.My son, gbfootball04 has grown up since his comment here, and may one day claim his family heritage of performing music, and not spoofing it. But I doubt it. Again appologies for an inside joke that was posted.

  • @bensdadfrank I did too....In Memoriam? It's reminded me of Heath Ledger ever since.

  • beautiful song

  • Joe Henry is one of the best.

  • I don't care.. Its really good. Its struck.

  • Such a moving song, beautiful..

  • Love this song, reminds me of my husband that has left this world and has gone to another world, God only knows, hope he is there in his peace. Very moving, and soft.

  • May he listen and enjoy this tender and beautiful song from there and be forever in peace, gloriasant.

  • Thank you I appreciate your reply.

  • You're welcome, gloriasant. I don't know why, but sometimes this song reminds me of another beautiful song: "Sunny sailor boy", by irish singer Luka Bloom (there's a nice video of this song, taken from a DVD called "The Man is Alive").

  • Beautifully moving.

  • He should play and sing this song at next year's Oscars for the Memoriam segment. Then everybody will talking about Joe Henry the next morning.

  • I second that.

  • TCM used this song on their 2008 remembrance of film industry people who died. Very moving and the best of the last several years.

  • This appears to have been recorded in Ann Arbor at the Ark,, I guess a year or so ago.. I went to that show..

  • One of the most emotionally powerful songs ever made. Saddens me how it's almost unknown by the bubblegum music fed masses..

  • Isn't it amazing how such awesome talent is ignored by the polluted music mainstream.

Alas I digress, you can't force feed music of this quality to a musically handicapped public...they prefer to eat the musical equivlent of unhealthy fast food!!!

  • New Joe Henry Album drops on August 18th!!!

  • Did you get yours yet?

    ~C

  • hey chris, no harm no foul! it takes a music lover to appreciate another music lover! you rock, take good care, suzy

  • golly no sexystudlychris, I figured you'd understand since we both love music. See: Frank Zappa

  • lol no harm done suzy baby, I just write stupid harmless jokes for a laugh.

i'm a joker, and like to stay up beat

    you rock girl.

    xoxo =)

  • Thanks for posting this !

  • lovely.

  • I was looking for "Stop" from "Scar". I am surprised it isn't on YT anywhere. What a shame.

  • That's right, and the drummer is the great Jay Bellerose. He's been playing w/ Plant/Krauss for a few years.....produced by T-Bone B.

  • I believe the bass player is David Piltch.

  • who is this bassist?

  • Civilians is the best album I've heard for a few years--feels like Astral Weeks, interlocked, meditative, pulled out of a deep, spiritual place....

  • Can someone musically talented try ti figure out chords for this song and write them down here?????PLS :(

  • this is a guess on guitar, can't be as precise as the piano. someone with more talent: please correct!

    Cm Bb Gm

    Darkness settles on the ground

    Bb F

    Leaves the day stumbling blind

    And maybe just in time

  • thx seem good to me.

  • He does remiind me a lot of Tom Waits.Wonderful.

  • Darkness settles on the ground Leaves the day stumbling blind Coming to a quiet close And maybe just in time We almost lost the heart to know How to keep our best in mind We almost lost the heart to know How to keep our best in min Time has turned an angry face Throws a dark eye back to sea What will pass for mercy now We practice unforgivingly As if might and will make right Or either one will make us free As if might and will make right Or either one will make us free
  • Thank you for posting the lyrics. What a beautiful and haunting song.

  • Lovers laugh and cross this way Weaving out and into the street It seems we never were so young Or it was never quite so sweet But the world is always beautiful When its seen in full retreat The worst of life is beautiful As it slips away in full retreat God only knows that we can we do No more or less than hell allow God only knows that we mean well God knows that we just dont know how But Ill try to be your light in love And pray that is enough for now
  • This song blows me away.

  • Wonderful. Beautiful song and superb performance by a true under-appreciated artist.

  • I heard this song on TCM and I was entranced for 5 minutes.

  • there is no learning in that.

  • This dude is awesome. I've only head "Civilians" but there are some fantastic songs on there. I'm definately gonna have to look at his older catalogue. I wish I could get a good video of "Our Song."

  • Simply GREAT. He's one of my favourite artists with T.Waits and Vinicio Capossela.

  • One of our greatest living songwriters. For those of you who only know who this guy was because of Grey's Anatomy, you need to go find the album Scar right now and listen to Richard Pryor Addresses A Tearful Nation with Brad Mehldau and Ornette Coleman.

  • When I listening to this great song almost made me sad !

  • Thanks for it, nedmost, és un directe molt bo i commovedor :)

  • I'm just curious - for those of you here, when did you start listening to him? I remember looking him up on YouTube about a year ago and there were like 2 videos, now there seems to be a ton of fans (which is good!) Is it just because his song was on Grey's?

  • well for me yes it was because it was on grey's lol... is it just me or dose he remind you of damian rice in a weird way?

  • yeah a bit like damien rice with tom waits

  • Nah, it's because of his duet with Loudon Wainwright on "You can't fail me now." Awesome version.

  • god this is so amazing, it makes me think of my Girlfriend. and then it makes me cry in happynes, so GR8!! fav song and it will be that for the next 10.0000000 years to come

  • I saw him alive in Alicante(Spain) and i can only say one thing this song alive is just glory, something magical, so dificult to explain with words, thx for the video and for the lyric.

  • I'M a fan!!!!

  • you are so kind, I will never forget this tnx :D
