.. Man has been getter better in tiny steps for hundreds of thousands of years by realizing and acting on evolved predispositions that are (at some level) hard-wired .. to love and help each other and find some human happiness and betterment .. by ourselves
Joe Henry is good but doesn't know everything. When one disregards superstitions and myths and the sometimes creepy dogma of the Bible (stone and kill kids who talk back to parents? Jesus says to condemn forever those who can't believe in god due to intelligent skepticism?) One can really evolve and love..
Love this song, first saw it on TCM. I had to find it. It was my introduction to Joe Henry. Wonderful bass work here too. Plays it like its a Stratocaster.Anyone know the bassist's name?
@GoofyBCN Please forgive my son, as the name Marvin is an inside joke.My son, gbfootball04 has grown up since his comment here, and may one day claim his family heritage of performing music, and not spoofing it. But I doubt it. Again appologies for an inside joke that was posted.
Love this song, reminds me of my husband that has left this world and has gone to another world, God only knows, hope he is there in his peace. Very moving, and soft.
You're welcome, gloriasant. I don't know why, but sometimes this song reminds me of another beautiful song: "Sunny sailor boy", by irish singer Luka Bloom (there's a nice video of this song, taken from a DVD called "The Man is Alive").
Isn't it amazing how such awesome talent is ignored by the polluted music mainstream.
Alas I digress, you can't force feed music of this quality to a musically handicapped public...they prefer to eat the musical equivlent of unhealthy fast food!!!
Darkness settles on the ground Leaves the day stumbling blind Coming to a quiet close And maybe just in time We almost lost the heart to know How to keep our best in mind We almost lost the heart to know How to keep our best in min Time has turned an angry face Throws a dark eye back to sea What will pass for mercy now We practice unforgivingly As if might and will make right Or either one will make us free As if might and will make right Or either one will make us free
Lovers laugh and cross this way Weaving out and into the street It seems we never were so young Or it was never quite so sweet But the world is always beautiful When its seen in full retreat The worst of life is beautiful As it slips away in full retreat God only knows that we can we do No more or less than hell allow God only knows that we mean well God knows that we just dont know how But Ill try to be your light in love And pray that is enough for now
This dude is awesome. I've only head "Civilians" but there are some fantastic songs on there. I'm definately gonna have to look at his older catalogue. I wish I could get a good video of "Our Song."
One of our greatest living songwriters. For those of you who only know who this guy was because of Grey's Anatomy, you need to go find the album Scar right now and listen to Richard Pryor Addresses A Tearful Nation with Brad Mehldau and Ornette Coleman.
I'm just curious - for those of you here, when did you start listening to him? I remember looking him up on YouTube about a year ago and there were like 2 videos, now there seems to be a ton of fans (which is good!) Is it just because his song was on Grey's?
god this is so amazing, it makes me think of my Girlfriend. and then it makes me cry in happynes, so GR8!! fav song and it will be that for the next 10.0000000 years to come
I saw him alive in Alicante(Spain) and i can only say one thing this song alive is just glory, something magical, so dificult to explain with words, thx for the video and for the lyric.
God only knows that we can we do No more or less than he'll allow God only knows that we mean well God knows that we just don't know how But I'll try to be your light in love And pray that is enough for now I'll try to be your light in love And pray that is enough for now I'll pray that is enough for now I'll pray that is enough for now I'll pray that is enough for now I'll pray that is enough for now

He should play and sing this song at next year's Oscars for the Memoriam segment. Then everybody will talking about Joe Henry the next morning.

I second that.

TCM used this song on their 2008 remembrance of film industry people who died. Very moving and the best of the last several years.

Time has turned an angry face
Throws a dark eye back to sea
What will pass for mercy now
We practice unforgivingly
As if might and will make right
Or either one will make us free
As if might and will make right
Or either one will make us free
