  • I had and still have the Bondi blue *side note Matt didn't pronounce the name right......just saying* it cost me about $2500 at the time which was a lor of money for a PC but it was worth it EXCEPT for the video card that let the iMac down. But it was still better than using windows

  • My strawberry iMac G3 won't stay powered on anymore :*(

  • there had to be that blue, the shame!

  • Only one top comment? Here's my chance...90's FTW

  • @KnoxSUX No, just no.

  • why would you NOT want to be in the 90s? best decade ever!

  • As much as I like Apple, I have to disagree. Steve didn't necessarily save Apple and the iMac G3 wasn't the product to save it. Microsoft lent an enormous amount of money to the dying company. The iPod was the really savior of Mac as it gave an incentive to get a iMac.

    Just a little thought.

  • @DsiWiiReview I think you misunderstand the Microsoft deal. They didn't "lend" money, they bought preferred stock (which benefited Microsoft more than Apple). The benefit for Apple was that Microsoft committed to continuing to develop software for the Mac (which was crucial to the platform staying viable). As for what saved Apple, it was absolutely the iMac. Just look at the annual profit figures before and after its introduction.

  • @MattsMacintosh Ok, thanks for informing me unlike the retard fanboys. I like both sides but I hate the conflict. Both have there advantages and disadvantages.

  • @DsiWiiReview Do you even know who got microsoft to make a deal with apple? .... Steve. It was one of the first things he did after he came back i.e. improve relations with Microsoft. Please don't make blatant statements if you know nothing about the subject.

  • @DsiWiiReview The MS money was actually quite small in the grand scheme of things, and probably would only have kept apple going for a month or so.

Jobs cut out the waste projects and focused on a 4 computer strategy. Consumer desktop, Consumer Laptop, "Pro" Desktop, and "Pro" Laptop.

He also killed the clone Macs as the MS model doesn't work for Apple. He got people from NeXT working on the OS evolving NextStep into OS X. That with decent advertising and well designed products saved Apple.

  • El monitor de la MAC parece un televisor XD

  • I have a purple one. It was great.

Until I realized CPUs had gone all the way to 2 ghz and RAM had goe farther than 128 MB

    ._.

  • its pronounced "bond-eye" man dont insult us haha

  • I have almost the same one running 10.3.9.

It still works but really hurts your eye's using it at 1024x768.

    Although 800x600 works just fine.

I also noticed the screen will remain black when using it at a to low temperature, but that's with all those tube monitors right?

  • I wish apple died in the 90s

  • @mrturret01 agree with you

  • @TheFR3SHINATOR

    Why?

  • @Alantgv I dont really like apple, overpriced products, they do not invent the things that go into their products (A5 chip by Samsung, Retina screen by LG and 8mp camera by Sony) and take the companies that make products for them to court. Why do you like Apple?

  • @TheFR3SHINATOR

Becouse their design is amazing, its unlike anything else in the industry.

  • @Alantgv I did not really like this design, this is my personal opinion but i think every apple prouct past 2005 looks really nice.

  • @mrturret01

    Why?

  • @mrturret01 i agree 100%

  • @mrturret01 like you :D

  • what's the background music?

  • If the iMac's colour was really based off of Bondi Beach's water, it would be vomit green.

  • I remember using one in computer class back when I was in elementary school

  • @Tiffany92592 i had the same computer in middle school. haha!

  • looks like my oold tv

  • It sure was heavy...

  • lalws your videos' intros were really corny :D

  • The G3 was the last time I used a Mac.

    Brings back memories.

  • @BigBobsh2o I use a PC Hackintosh.

  • @maw88ify

If you have Linux and Windows what's the point of a Hackintosh? Isn't 2 operating systems enough? Whenever I watch videos about OS X it just reminds me of Linux. The desktop is a cross between Gnome 2 and KDE with a dock included with some window effects. Plus some of the icons look almost identical.

  • @BigBobsh2o You are correct Mac OS is a lot like Linux , but with less desktop effects , and less customizable. Most Mac terminal commands are also the same as Linux, and BSD. Mac OS is also a lot like Windows , but with way less software, less games, and less viruses. The only reason I have it is because I like learning about all OSes. Mac OS Lion also drop support for most of their software that is older than five years old, and this means they have even less software now.

  • @maw88ify

Seriously it doesn't support softare from 5 years ago? That's horrible. It really makes me wonder why people even bother with Macs. I bet if I had a copy of Office 2000 or something from the early 2000's I could run it fine on Windows 7. Heck I think you can run Office 2000 or other older programs on Linux with Wine.

  • Comment removed

  • @BigBobsh2o yeah and I can do the same with OS X Idiot, you can run Wine on that :P,

  • I remember my aunt had one of these when I was a kid. I suppose it was because my hands were smaller, but the mouse was super comfortable. Small hands work best on the hockey puck mouse. She also had one of the third party mice, but I preffered the puck due to it's abnormal shape.

  • so i think this guy deals with mac not sure lol

  • Not to mention, the iMac also created enough revenue so Apple could have and then they did use finical ability to create the iPod in 2001, did you know Matt?

  • I love macs but i think their mice until today are a big failure. I know they look good but unusuable thats for sure.

  • There's also the same computer but in an orange color! Are those ones rare?

  • @Vectrex4Life Those ones were the "version 1.2" of the first generation of the iMac that had the slot loading DVD drive instead of the tray loading like this one and they came in various colors

  • Would you be willing to sell any of your original Macs?

  • one of my dreams is get apple se, imac g3 and mac cube. :) I already have imac g4, mac g5, imac normal and imac mid 2011.

  • where did you get all your apple products?

  • Great computer.

But if the screen/computer gets broken since they are together there is not much you can do about it.

  • yay i´ve one :D

  • I found one on ebay for $25.00. should I buy it? :)

  • Traditional shapes and sizes of mouses, I hate those aftermarket mouses, they're just junk.

  • Hay Matt, What do you think is the LOWEST ram you can use in this?

  • g3 had 4gb of ram which now flash drives have more than that XD but back then it was boss D; G3 appears in SNSD oh video XD

  • @louietheduke no the ram cap was 512 mb the hard drive maxed out at 13 gb on the expensive model

  • I got this but a real mouse

  • Matt I've recently got an iMac G3 and really want to use it but every time I turn it on the screen turns white and says failed to boot. Do you know what's wrong with my iMac?

  • i wanna see cube's review.

  • Please review the Macintosh LC

  • I have this same one and I am using it right now.

  • LOL Going back in time...that finally explains where Apple get their new tech,

  • Can this PC run Mac OS 10?

  • @skatepartner it can run osx but the max is 10.4 tiger

  • @TheiPodTouchTips Actually the G3 can run OS X Tiger Server as its max Maybe Leopard if you upgrade the RAM

  • @skatepartner Up to 10.4 tiger.

  • Does the iMac g3 need something to start like a CD

  • The plural of mouse is not "mouses"

  • sometimes you remind me of bill nye the science guy. SUBSCRIBED

  • g3 unsx (imac) looks rouv (epic)

  • Does the two headphone inputs mean that it's mono?

  • My favourite iMac was the iMac G4. It just looks fucking awesome!!!

  • the first technical iMac was the 1984 macintosh

  • What was the review after the official macintosh

  • @MattsMacintosh Why do you think Mac OS 8 and 9.1 were behind for it's time?

  • Review both plz if possible =)

  • I still have the logic board for this system... I just need to get a Monitor.

  • This was more of an overview of it's history and significance rather than a review. I am dissapointed :(

  • cube

  • Still remember, it was my first mac machine

  • My favorite Macintosh computer was the "iMac G3". Every time i think about the "iMac G3", it takes me back to 1999 & 2000.

  • Love your videos, they are really interesting, but please buy a new tripod! When you moved the camera from down to up(keyboard to logo) in the end, my moviemaking-heart broke into pieces :)

  • Rest in Peace Jobs =/

You will be missed from Sweden.

  • rip Steve Jobs

  • Had these in kindergarten thru the 4 grade. It was not only the first I used but the first one I got on the internet with :D I also remeber how we got the thick moniter with the guts of the conputer in the moniter Macs. I went back to my elementary school last year and they're still using some of these guy sin the class rooms. :D

  • in 1st grade i used one like that

  • should i get a mac pro or this g3? just kidding xD

  • My school had these back in the day and I loved the iMac. I thought they were super cool looking.

  • @Terd2402 Yeah! my school have a few of them left.

  • @Terd2402 Mine too. I really wanted it not really knowing what it was, but even then, I could tell Macs were different. Who knew that it would save the company back then. I really miss stepping into computer labs and seeing what new Macs the school bought for the new year.

  • So, we had these in school and the Hockey Puck mouse was my favorite part! haha! Oh well!

  • I freakin´love this computer. I have one in the kitchen to listen to some music as I cook. And I really like the mouse, in fact, I´ve swapped mouses and I use this puck thing on my iMac and the Mighty Mouse on the Bondy Blue :D

    Great video, by the way!!

  • @Pai3000 i have 2 of them in our garage

  • @jde2k10

Lucky. I love these things. If you're not using them, I'll buy em. :D

  • @Donzieja no i gave them to my litle bro and sis

  • @jde2k10

    Dammit, lol. :D

  • I actually need 1000000 stocks from 90's ..... i'll pay if you get 'em!

  • you really say Cathode Ray Tube not CRT?

  • I like the mouse!!!!

  • Matt you look like my wierdo pervert geography teacher, Mr Dixon but like 25 years younger, No offence

  • Im thinking of giving a 2002 model 1GB of RAM and a better hard drive putting lunix on it and making it a web server, would that be a good idea? its a smaller site and almost no flash, would you recomend this?

  • BON - DIE, awsome review

  • Hey Matt, ive got the exactly imac like you. mine has got some issiues with the USB devices. Am I able to change them?

    Please respond!

  • That mouse was made for kids, that's why its so small. Big Corp's Motto "Get them when they are young"

  • I remember how badly I wanted one of these at that time, just based on the look of them. They looked like the future to me, really slick. They look hideous to me now lol. Especially that stupid round mouse. But I replace the mighty mouse even today. Apple doesn't make a good mouse.

  • @derekeverett Haha ikr. I look back at the old G3 iMacs and G3 Clam style iBooks, and I wonder what was the design team on back then. The special edition G3 iMacs are still cool looking, imo.

  • It really is an amazing machine. I can run Unreal and SiN at 28 fps, Quake 3 Arena at 22 fps and Aliens Vs. Predator Gold at 18 fps.

One thing that wasnt menchioned in the video is the OS 9 ram handling. Rarely when os 9 would run out of memory or there was a small error, it would stop the program and gracefully return to the desktop; mostly it would lock up, and you would need to restart. I increased the ram of my iMac to 512mb, and jacked up the perferred memory usage of all my applications

  • I'm watching this in 2011....... that's some prehistoric machinery!

  • @cmarshall1018 It's the Macally mouse.

  • how do you get such clean looking vintage macs?

  • dude your awesome

  • G4 Cube!

  • G4 iMac!!! I love the design so much!

  • this makes me wish i wasnt born in 1996. :(

  • My school had these when.

  • LOOK A BOAT ANCHOR lol

  • I love that mouse!!!

  • should i get an emac?

  • I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That is one cool iMac!

  • g4 cube

  • bony beady? its bondi

  • dude, it's BOND-I as in i-Mac.

    you sound ridiculous!

  • i remember having tons of these in my elementary school. i miss the old days

  • bondi blue + microsoft financial support = apple survival

    wierd huh

  • i would like to see someone pimp it out with 8gb of RAM a Core-I7 and a 1TB- HDD

  • Can I upgrade this to a Intel Celeron? Lol

  • @Tabby266

You can put a celeron motherboard in the case, but the actual iMac motherboard would not be compatible with it.

  • @Donzieja So I would basically have to gut it to upgrade the proccesor?

  • @Tabby266

Unfortunately, yes. And you're better off just getting a 15 inch lcd display to put where the monitor is. You can still use the speakers and ports if you're handy enough, just gotta re-route some of the circuitry.

  • @Tabby266

And by the way, if you can't stand the slow speed, I'd be willing to buy it. Lol, just a suggestion.

  • @Donzieja I dont own one, I was just thinking it would be a cheap alternative if the Dell in my brother's studio dies.

  • @Tabby266

Orly? Sorry.... really tired right now.

  • I have a nearly new, g3, with the, as much a it will go, upgrades, and I have to say, it works just fine. The max programs I can run is around 3-4, sometimes 5, but that's fine with me seeing as how I don't need to multitask as much with it anyways.

    :P

  • At 2:09 this guy says Mac OS 8/9 was behind the times? (Bondi iMac came with 8.5 or 8.6 I believe)... and that Apple realized this fact? It was almost Be OS or Copeland which really was Mac OS 9 but better.

I LOVED Mac OS 9 and it was way ahead of Windows, maybe not Be OS, on par at points, but Matt, you're too young to know what it was like. I find that annoying, even though you made this vid in '09, that statements seems really uninformed.

Mac OS 9 was speedy, simple, great, fast, etc. etc.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY IMAC!!!

  • Got to about 0:43 seconds into the video and thought "cannot be arsed waiting for the actual review to start..." ... then closed the window

  • Can you upgrade to OS 10

  • @CrashTest355 yes up to 10.3 i think

  • @Hellhelium11231995 10.3.9 Panther

  • @CrashTest355 ahhh yes the Panther!

  • Ha I also have a time machine and I will go back and give bill gates windows 7, it will be the more advanced than any mac!

    Apple will be destroyed forever!

  • @AaronM9552 sure you do...

  • In my town there is this old computer shop, and the other day I was in there and I saw a line of normal g3 imacs and a g4 imac, but there was one other that looked like a g3 with some differences, it was more square, the ports weren't recessed or under a flap and it was a little bigger, do you know what it was

  • @Person432483920 you might be talking about the emac.

  • In my town there is this old computer shop, and the other day I saw a line of normal g3 imacs and a g4 imac, but there was one other that looked like a g3 with some differences, it was more square, the ports weren't recessed or under a flap and it was a little bigger, do you know what it was

  • If it weren't for Steve Jobs, I wouldn't be typing this! D:

  • ahhh, i used to love these computers when i went to public school, but have never got enough money to buy a mac of my own :(

  • What year is this computer??

  • Do you have any old Performas?

  • my iMac actually still works! After 11 years.

  • I just got my first iMac a few weeks ago (after using a Macbook for four years), and now I'm really tempted to get one of these original iMacs as a collector's item. Do the original G3s support Airport cards, or is that only on the newer models?

  • Hey i want to get a 2nd hand 1998 imac G3, what is a good price (in USD) ?

  • How rare are the rev A iMac G3's

  • I remember when schools and cruise ships used to use these computers, they were awesome haha

  • Matt, should i buy one of these as a cheapo first mac? Should I upgrade it after i get it? What is that third-party mouse at 2:12? Please reply.

  • @cmarshall1018 I would not recommend this as an actual daily use computer. Its going to be extremely slow by today's standards, even with upgrades. I would say the G4 iMac is the oldest mac that you could still use today and not go crazy.

  • @MattsMacintosh thanks!

  • @MattsMacintosh what do you think is a good price for a iMac g4

  • @MattsMacintosh u sure

  • @MattsMacintosh I use a 600MHZ G3 iMac as my other everyday computer

  • @MattsMacintosh i bet i could handle the slowness. i didnt mean to bud in sorry

  • @MattsMacintosh Tbe 600MHZ is ok for that, just add more memory and OSX tiger

  • @cmarshall1018 You could probably use the iMac G5 though :)

  • @cmarshall1018 its an atplly mouse

  • What is the name of that background music at 1:02

  • @hypermonkey3 Yes, but you need a third-party application. (can't remember the name though). :)

  • my elementary skl had these. they were old and slow. at least there were new macs too.

  • I'm gonna buy an iMac G3 Blueberry

  • LOL

Its pronounced Bond-eye!! NOt bond-ee XD Sorry, Ive never heard someone say it like that. hehe

  • bought one for $10

  • What about the 2nd model of the G3?
