you dont think so? i think they have similar aspects like leading the chest and the angle flying into the pit is the same. bubka just has some more room to move on the pole than warmerdam did....givin bubka the ability to use a wider hand grip and keep his trail back ferther
Dutch was a real gentleman. He was the first to go over 15'. He was my pole vaulting coach when I was at Fresno State. If he had a pole like they have today he would still still be the champ. Any remember the man from wheaties (Rev. Richards). I jumped against him in one of the Fresno State relays. Dutch had the the bamboo pole in the locker room at Fresno State and often he would go out and practice with us. Lots of gret memories.
I was on a FSC track team as a thrower 1964- 65. Dutch was a real gent and very knowledgable on all the events. His ability to organize and administer all those giant meets was a wonder to me after I tried coaching at Roosevelt HS...glad to hear from an alumus and track guy from FSC.
Because the pole didn't bend you didn't need to have your bottom arm be the pressure arm and having the hands so close together makes it easier to swing.
RIP Gramps! Your bamboo pole record stands forever. -Gary W
