no. pironi was shatteringly fast - he destroyed everyone he was team mates with...it's just that he met villeneuve...and were there team orders at imola? would we say in this age that he did what he had to to win? they both effectively lost their lives to taking massive risks...i think villeneuve senna would have been the craziest team in the history of the sport

@rendlesham , there were team orders that year in Imola. Pironi was told to stay in his position and not try to pass Gilles, but he ignored orders.

I think Enzo Ferrari misjudged integrity of DP, only saw that he was fast, was fooled by this weasel. He should have fired Prickoni at the moment he had Imola trophy in hands. So many regrets... besides, I'm french, and I feel it's a true burden to know that prickoni is too, he spoiled our (already rather pathetic) reputation.

Incredibly intense, fast and brave, Gilles remains and will remain in our dearest memories. We'll never see a driver like him ever again. Well, Lazerpod, I consider Prickoni is partially responsible for GV's death. He betrayed him in Imola. GV was furious and worse, deeply disgusted and distracted, it led him to take even more risks than usual (which proved to be impossible as the guy was already impersonating the extreme). Compare with 79 when Scheckter was n°1, then code of honour has been respected by... GV.

I agree to a certain point minastronasse, yes, he double crossed Gilles, but Villeneuve was betrayed by his own naive trusting self. In a way, Pironi was acting naturally, being selfish. They were 2 different animals. Gilles was open and honest, and Didier was the complete opposite. One event that happened early in 82 that should have flicked a switch in Gilles's head, is when Pironi got married to Catherine, he wasn't invited, and Gilles didn't click at that oversight...I sure would have.
