i remember this from a looong time ago, anyone here remember the name of the enemy's gun? that big huge gun that sent it's laser to wherever yamato battleship was?
NOT SO FUN FACT: Iscandar the name of the planet is the way Alexander the Great was called in Persian (middle east) and Central and South Asia (Indias and the rest)
FUN FACT: The man who sings this opening, Isao Sasaki, also does the voice of the narrator in the 2010 live-action film! He also played Hajime Saito in Yamato 2 and Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, as well as Daisuke Shima in Final Yamato.
@CCharmanderK I still think they should've brought him back to do the theme song. I didn't like the Alfee version in Rebirth, and "love lives" sounded like it was done for award bait. Isao Sasaki's rendition will always be the best though.
I just now revisited this page and I think I may have been the one to accidentally flagged this. I was trying to embed it to my FB and I accidentally pressed the button. I even tried getting YouTube to unflag it. Sorry everyone.... ^^;;;;;;
For a majority of animation fans, it is this epic saga (1974-83) that began the golden age of animé. What followed were Galaxy Express 999 (1979-81), everything Gundam from the original series (1979) to Char's Counterattack (1988), the original Macross (1982-87), Vampire Hunter D (1985) and Dirty Pair (1985), and many other classics. To most people, the golden age ended with 'Akira' (1988), which erased all doubts about the power of animé.
It's not lost on us westerners, the significance of raising a ship that was originally sunk because it was sent on a suicide, desperate last-ditch mission from the seabed, so it can be sent on a similar mission.... Across the galaxy.
I think that we in the U.S. missed a lot of the intended significance behind the series, but it was still awesome. Perhaps to us we wouldn't understand the pride that the Japanese people put into the Yamato. It was a good show for the era, even though (I feel now) that the english voice acting, script and editing gave us an inferior product. It's a much better show in the original format with subtitles.
Whoever flagged this one deserves the title of : " The Great Moron". There is nothing wrong with it. Also, 5 stars to Yamato. Will the retard (if he has the guts) who flagged it come forward ? Long live Yamato. ErikRcosmictiger1960
Why is support for the Japanese war efforts in the first half of the twentieth century any more inappropriate than the films, books, plays, and songs created in support of wars of aggression by anyone? Bah, nevermind. This is not the place for discussion of history, unless you want to be called a faggot.
I am, good chap. It's not cool to say such a loss of life "doesn't matter". Millions of men died on both sides for what they believed was right, you can't just dismiss that without being a complete faggot.
xntr has a small point, but that kind of knee-jerk reaction is inappropriate considering the tone and theme of the series. Basically, it's racism with an extraordinarily flimsy veneer of pariotism.
The stories of this anime and the lyrics of its theme song are supposed to be highly based on the historical fact that the real (naval) battleship Yamato departed to Okinawa on oneway suicidal voyage to fight with US Navy, some months before Japan's defeat in WWII.
So, some might think this anime and its song glorify Imperial Japanese Navy, and hate it.
Well, that works as an argument until you see promos for Otokotachi no Yamato.
While I'm not going to defend Uchuu Senkan Yamato's occasionally blatant statements regarding the war, but at least it was an anime.
Otokotachi no Yamato is a live-action film, for which a nearly complete replica was constructed, and focused on the men who were sent on that suicide mission to Okinawa. So why aren't promos for that film flagged as inappropriate?
@EdealSjesn There have been some horrible western translations of anime series;"Star Blazers" was not one of them.Griffen-Bacal handled this franchise with respect, and in some ways they improved upon it.I'll take Eddie Allen's interpretation of Leader Desslok over Masado Ibu's monitone Lord Deslar.I also prefer Avatar over Okita.And isn't it odd that the 2010 Yamato film makes reference to Gamilons, not 'Gamilusions' as they did in the original series.Both shows were good in their own way.
