I found this video by surfing for African singing. I LOVE the women's clothing and head wraps. And I LOVE the dancing. I think it's great for people around the world to see videos of different African countries and through those videos become aware that there are so many different wonderful cultures within that continent and within those specific countries. What is the song about? What language is it in? Would someone please share something about the singer?
iam senegalese the same origin of this singer. like in the tittle her name is kiné laam. she is very famouis in senegal and sings traditional songs. the tittle " gewel laa" means iam a griot.. in the senegalse tradition "gewel" is those people who sing and who talk in order to save the african history. owing to the gewel poplle know african culture and tradition beause in the past africans people ont write they only talk.
in this song she talks about the family of one here friend. .
In the USA some people are more familiar with the French word "griot" for these musicians/historians. I learned a while ago that "jali" (jeli) means the same thing in Mali. I'm glad to learn the Senegalese word "gewel".
Usually books & pages such as Wikipedia make it seem like only men were/are these singers/musicians/oral historians. From your comment I've learned that isn't true.
Thank you so much for sharing some of your culture!! I want 2 learn more.
@7senegalese I found the video Baaba Maal: Niiwa. Thank you!!
I've heard Baaba Maal before, but didn't know about that video. I like his singing and also like the clothing & the women's traditional hairstyles shown in that video. I'll write a comment on that video & add it to this video & others on my online site of YouTube music/dance gems. Google Jambalayah. Thanks, again, my friend!
