I love this song....I taught all my students how to dance to this. It is the blend of all worlds as the dances come together to represent the love of all human beings. When I first choreographed it, it was not well-received....it was done with no dishonor to my Hawaiian culture. It was to express the beauty of how Hawaiians accept all walks of life! ~ Charmaine Lee
LOL im from hawaii xD my dad likes this song alot. Lol when i was 5 or 7 my grandma would sing this to me before she passed away im 15 know lol this songs so old lol. never knew it was a hawaii local thing or am i wrong idk lol
@dougcsamo As far as being 4th gen Japanese and NOT being upset at the "obvious racism" implied by the song..... It's the same reason why we can tease each other here in Hawai'i and NOT take offense at each others "teasing". Now compare that to being "slapped" on the head while I was in the US Army because it was Dec 7th, and it was supposed to be "Slap a Jap" day because of Pearl Harbor..... now THAT, I took offense at !!!! That came from a place of hatred, while our teasing is out of fun.
My comment was sarcastic because I was offended that the song seemed to reduce Japanese people to that crude stereotype. Unfortunately, sarcasm doesn't come off in type, as it does in person, so I understand how you perceived my comments.
To me, this song is as racist as Mickey Rooney's portrayal of Mr. Unioshi in "Breakfast at Tiffanys"
@dougcsamo My sincerest apologies! I realize now that you were being facetious. I think it was your reply to "hawaiiclayton" something to the effect of keep posting so he can "learn" how to write, also that comment of "...try using spell check" that made me feel you were attacking the "intelligence" of the people of Hawai'i! To make matters worse.... my name ALSO happens to be "Clayton".. Lol !! So that was a "double whammy" that I took personally! Lol !! Again, my sincerest apologies!
Obvioulsy a comment from someone who is still immature, but keep on speaking your mind because it is part of the growth process. Unless you're an American, then your comments would be typical for such. :)
Obviously a comment from someone where making racist jokes is acceptable... but keep posting that way you can learn to spell! (PS try using spell check).
@dougcsamo Thass rite! Eh, in Hawai'i we can mek any kine jokes we like, speak pidgin english if we like, we can tell Podagee joke, Japanee jokes, chinee jokes, Flip jokes, Ha'ole jokes we no care. Wat, dougcsamo... you wen Ha'ole eh? Can tell you know... I'm proud I live Hawai'i, da melting pot of da Pacific! We mek music teasing odda races (ie. Mr San Cho Lee). I can also choose to speak intelligently, if I choose to!I I got your "spell check", and your Tarzan and Frankentein right HERE!
@hawaiiclayton Don't you mean "Ha'ole" ?? I am an American also, but I would not make such a remark as dougcsamo did. That was an ignorant comment from an ignorant person who probably still think people in Hawaii are illiterate, speak like Tarzan, live in grass shacks with no running water or electricity, and the women wear grass skirts and coconuts for bras!! Lol. You know Mr. "dougcsamo"; Our I'olani Palace had electricity before the Whitehouse did!! How's that one!!
Respond to this video... I've been to Hawaii several times, I don't have any negative opinions of Hawaii and haven't expressed any, either, so I am completely confused by your attacks.
@dougcsamo I sincerely apologize for my comments. This song came out when I was in high school, and Liz Damon and the Orient Express was a local group here in Hawaii. When you made the comment of Japanese people talking like Tarzan or Frankenstein, I took offense because I am Japanese (4th generation here in Hawai'i), and it upset me that you would lump ALL Japanese people as talking like that!
@dougcsamo That comment about "racist joke" sparked my ire because, here in Hawaii, we always tease each other (different nationalities that make up the population in Hawai'i). That Tarzan/Frankenstein remark, though directed towards Japanese people, I felt was insulting because of my Japanese ancestry. I was born and raised here in Hawai'i, therefore, that comment was also directed towards the people of Japanese ancestry here in Hawai'i, which in turn insulted the people of Hawai'i.
I think only in Hawaii this song was played on the airwaves here. Kool song from Bacharach and a local girl from Hawaii and her group. Sounds innocent and cute.
Yes, I remember hearing this in the early 70's while stationed in Schofield Barracks, HI. It's too bad it never left the Island. It probably would have made a huge hit like her other hit "1900 Yesterday."
@Odor1o1 This song made me a little sad because I'd never heard Liz Damon sing anything but 1900 Yesterday. To me, she sounds like Karen Carpenter. Just made me miss Karen because she meant a lot to my wife and me.
@Azishome I totally agree!! I LOVED The Carpenters!! Yes, Liz Damon's voice sounds remarkably like Karen Carpenter's voice!! I miss her too!! Sad that she's no longer with us! I wonder what happened to Liz Damon?
@clayludicrous I've tried to run down Miss Liz, but it's difficult to follow a time line on her. Some accounts have her moving to Las Vegas, but I can't tell if that was permanent or not. Wherever she is, I hope she's happy and content. Thanks for your observation. Nice to meet you.
@Azishome Ever since I stumbled onto this link... I keep listening to it and I STILL hear Karen Carpenter in my mind!!! I think Liz Damon had the voice that was the CLOSEST sounding to Karen's don't you think?
@clayludicrous Yes. You're right. Really amazing how much she sounds like Miss Karen. By the way--and I realize I'm intruding here--I've read about the comments you've traded with some people. I appreciate and encourage you to be glad about who you are and where your family has come from. (I liked your Pidgin comment, too.) I am American Indian--I don't accept the Native American thing. My great-great-grandfather was the last traditional leader of our tribe. Again, great to know you.
@Odor1o1 yea my dads from hawaii were japanese lol like my dads 3rd generation here XD he said hew loves this song sinceh e was like high school or somefin xD

ハーパースビザールのバージョンが有名ですが、この曲は誰がカバーしてもいいですね。
日本でもピチカートや高野寛がカバーしていましたが、改めて心にしみます。
