It's actually so that marowak is not the mother of cubone but that kangaskhan is the mother of cubone. In the very first game of pokemon, marowak was supposed to evolve into kangaskhan. By some reason that i don't know they didn't want marowak to evolve into an kangaskhan anymore and took kangaskhan out of the "evolution line" and made it into a non-evolveable pokemon. The pokemon in kanghaskhans pouch is supposed to be an cubone without it's mother kangaskhans skull on.

@camwoodstock- no, she is not unfortunately... If you play the old Pokemon version games (yellow for an example) you'll notice that her dead spirit lurks around the ghost tower. When you run into it, she'll look like an unknown ghost, and you need a special scope to even identify her (since she's already dead).

Oh, before anyone says something about the Marowak in the game; don't forget that she was a Ghost in the game; it's possible that when she was killed, her head was skinned or something equally morbid. Or, perhaps in death, she took on the skull appearance to make her child feel more at home after having donned its mother's skull.

@SPAZmatik843 As to why it's impossible to find a Marowak w/o the skull: There's a possibility that after evolution, the skull fuses to Marowak's head, or perhaps the presence of the skull causes Marowak's own skull to emerge from the skin and be on the outside instead of the inside.

And we have no proof that a Marowak survives bringing her baby into the world, or lives long after. If so, the baby may have a survival instinct that causes it to get its mother's skull and wear it for protection.

This would mean that the mother and baby wouldn't be alive at the same time, and therefore wouldn't have skulls at the same time.

Of course watch there be an anime episode or something that completely rapes this theory by showing a mother Marowak and her baby XD.

Heres a funny fact. Male marowaks never evolve, but the females actually evolve into Kangaskhans to reproduce. After giving birth, they die and the baby wears its mothers skull over its head: Cubone. The cycle starts over. It is very rare for a Kangaskhan to live. That is why there are so few and why they are only seen with their children. When the mother does eventually die, the child becomes Cubone and puts the skull over its head. Continued Bellow.

However, the developers of the Pokemon Red/Blue decided to split the evolution from Marowak to Kangaskhan at the last minute. This created a new file called 'M also called MISSINGNO. (Missing Number) they placed the empty file on Cinnabar Island after talking with the old man in Viridian City. His only purpose is a training tutorial early in the game, and Cinnabar Island is one of the last areas you can go to.. So they assumed no one would go through a basic tutorial at such late stage in story.

Fast Creepypasta: Baby Kanghaskan is supposed to be a Cubone with it's dead mother's skull (Kanghaskan), and Kanghaskan is supposed to be Marowak, they added Kanghaskan to fill in one spot in the Pokèdex, that's why one glitch pokemon evolves into kanghaskan. Baby Kanghaskan going to be Adult Kanghaskan, gonna die and give the skull to Baby Kanghaskan, Baby Kanghaskan turns into Cubone

That other guy was partially true. They always had a Kangaskhan, but they were gonna add a baby evolution in the PokeDex. They never had the time, and instead of completely erasing it from the game, they just cut it off from the rest of it. That's why a MissingNO. or an M evolves into the Kanghaskhan if the game glitches. It's just the baby Kangaskhan they never added.

@BluestarFirestar89 I have a theory since on one of those pics marowak's skull looks kind of like mewtwo maybe dead pokemon get a connection with the legendary pokemon so then legendaries give them power to be ghosts then marowak removes it's skull right after death then mewtwo gives it the skull of a kanghaskan

Wouldn't that be odd to have Joey > Cubone > Marowak > Kangaskhan? And, by the way, Missingno. Appears also as a Aerodactyl and Kabutops skeleton. If you look at Aerodactyl's upper skull, you'll see it ressembles Cubone! That leaves us more mysteries. And what about Kabutops... ?

Nintendo didn't think it through properly. Bear in mind, this was before Breeding was introduced, so they could play around with the fragile story of Cubone wearing it's mother's skull for game plot. Then breeding came out and players found out that Cubone hatched with a skull and bone club, which did dissappoint some players, and the Marowak story became a bit... broken. But they still used it in the remakes of RBY.
