I love the end when Tails comes through the transporter after Robotnik and is just shrugging his shoulders like.. "i don't know what's going on either".
First boss wasn't too bad Sky High was a bitch and the others were easy but the final boss I only get one hit before I have to get into the tubes to avoid projectiles. The emeralds are easy to get when you know where they are except for Sky High where you have to use the glider (tho I think there's a spring near it to reach it just in case you fuck up the glider)
this game seems like a prequel to sonic 1 beacause tails wasant in sonic one but in this game it shows him geeting kiddnaped thats why hes noit in sonic 1 and later in the game you end up in green hill zone hmmm....

I never managed to obtain all the emeralds and get to the final zone. On one or two occasions I "somehow" made it to the end of the Scrambled Egg Zone and got the bad ending. Getting that far was good enough for me.
I remember beating this game when I was a child, but there were one or two emeralds I just couldn't quite get. When I saw Tails in the sky in the bad ending, I put 2 and 2 together and figured he died. I can't remember whether I cried or not, but I definitely felt a massive stabbing pain in my gut. I felt ROBBED. After all that work, too... this game was quite challenging.

The main reason the final boss is hard is because it's utterly unpredictable. There are times I've fought it and it has flooded the screen with projectiles, and sometimes he decides to combine attacks. One thing he didn't do often in the video was spam his lightning attack, which really doesn't give you all that long to get out of the chamber.
Whilst into the tube lets you avoid them, it's noticing them in time that's the problem.
@ACESpark Hey, I have a video of the final boss battle. My way of beating the final boss is much harder, and it took me over 100 tries just to do that trick right. I'll send a video response.

i don't see a ring counter on the screen. Is it assumed that for the final boss sonic has no rings and can't take one hit? If so this boss fight looks incredibly hard and frustrating. Also do you control when Sonic gets released from the floor/ceiling valves? And if you do if you don't push any buttons he just stays in the pipes forever or does the game eventually force you out. Very fascinating/impressive final boss fight for the primitive master system/game gear I must say.

when you think about the concept of the first boss... Why the fuck would robotnik continue to fire on the boss? after 2-3 friendly fire hits you think he'd realize he's fucking up.

@RETRODANIEL360 Yes. You had to collect all the Chaos Emeralds through the other levels. Once you had 5 of them, Silver Sonic would drop the 6th one and you'll enter the final Zone.

I honestly think that this version of Sonic 2 is by far more difficult than the Genesis/Mega Drive version. In that game, at least you had rings for a majority of the boss fights with the exception of Silver Sonic and the final boss. In this game, in all boss acts, there are no rings. You just gotta fight the boss and hope for the best. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who went through HELL against the boss in the Underground Zone!!

Sonic 1 GG. Try 19:43 for the whole game *with* the Chaos Emeralds. And before you say prove it, I can't. It was when the GG first came out (before the internet came out!). Once I'd finished it the first time I just got the idea 'I wonder how *fast* I can do it'? Then I spent two years practicing. Didn't quite realise how sad that was at the time, it just kinda happened. I could see entire levels in my head and had the button presses memorised. GG long gone now - no chance of recreation.
This was the first game I ever played, and man I'm glad it didn't turn me off of video games. I am certainly not saying this is a bad game, I love it, it's just so damn freakin' hard. I really can't believe I had the patience to finish it.
Man, looking at this really reminds me of how much I loved this game. So colorful, the graphics are damn good, a final boss that is actually damn tough, and tails is sooooo cute.

I always LOVED the Green Hill music in this game, and when I found out that the Japanese version of Sonic CD had a soundtrack largely based on that theme (its intro, title theme, speed shoes, etc) I was totally delighted!
Fantastic boss run! This was always the single hardest game in the Sonic series for me.
@GoldKnightProduction I know. Kind of doesn't make sense. Either it's a case of Sonic remembering being in those places before with Tails, or....they were GOING to have Tails in this game as well, but last-minute constraints, or difficulties programming his abilities, or the moon not being in the seventh house....this game came out the way it did!
@reniisgod The idea methinks is that they're super-robots. This was the first game where they had an idea that maybe Robotnik would create super-robots, rather than always taking on Sonic directly. This was the first game to do this (later Gamegear games, as well as the Act-1 boss in Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles, follow this pattern)
Holy crap I remember this from like 17 years ago I need to go check if my GameGear still works. Moments later, and damn, LCD's faulty. I'll have to repair that because this just hit me with a massive wave of nostalgia.

This is a different port of the game. Neither this game or the Genesis/Megadrive version share the same storyline.
The Sonic 1 game on Master System didn't have the same level design and layout as the GEN/MD version, either.

I honestly think that this version of Sonic 2 is by far more difficult than the Genesis/Mega Drive version. In that game, at least you had rings for a majority of the boss fights with the exception of Silver Sonic and the final boss. In this game, in all boss acts, there are no rings. You just gotta fight the boss and hope for the best. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who went through HELL against the boss in the Underground Zone!!

Sonic 1 GG. Try 19:43 for the whole game *with* the Chaos Emeralds. And before you say prove it, I can't. It was when the GG first came out (before the internet came out!). Once I'd finished it the first time I just got the idea 'I wonder how *fast* I can do it'? Then I spent two years practicing. Didn't quite realise how sad that was at the time, it just kinda happened. I could see entire levels in my head and had the button presses memorised. GG long gone now - no chance of recreation.

The final boss... what a nightmare during the old days.
I had so many lives (9+) when I got to this boss, and I end up having only 1 life left after I finally killed him.

This was the first game I ever played, and man I'm glad it didn't turn me off of video games. I am certainly not saying this is a bad game, I love it, it's just so damn freakin' hard. I really can't believe I had the patience to finish it.
Man, looking at this really reminds me of how much I loved this game. So colorful, the graphics are damn good, a final boss that is actually damn tough, and tails is sooooo cute.

@ChrisGamer13 Nah. The first boss on the Game Gear was a pain in the rear as the bombs bounced at different heights. The Master System version wasn't so bad as the bombs bounced at the same height.

I always LOVED the Green Hill music in this game, and when I found out that the Japanese version of Sonic CD had a soundtrack largely based on that theme (its intro, title theme, speed shoes, etc) I was totally delighted!
Fantastic boss run! This was always the single hardest game in the Sonic series for me.

Either it's a case of Sonic remembering being in those places before with Tails, or....they were GOING to have Tails in this game as well, but last-minute constraints, or difficulties programming his abilities, or the moon not being in the seventh house....this game came out the way it did!

@reniisgod The idea methinks is that they're super-robots. This was the first game where they had an idea that maybe Robotnik would create super-robots, rather than always taking on Sonic directly. This was the first game to do this (later Gamegear games, as well as the Act-1 boss in Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles, follow this pattern)
