Istanbul has almost 16 million inhabitants (excluding illegals)
Turkey has the 2nd strongest army wihtin NATO and is the only power that can rival the USA in the Middle-East (according to Foreign Policy magazine) and it will be the most powerful nation in Europe by 2050 (alhtough Turkey is not in Europe). Turkey now has the 16th largest economy of the world and the aim is to reach top 10 before 2023 (100th birthday of the Republic). Turkey's population will exceed that of Germany in a decade.
@070388OG Thanks, that's not too low of a score! It was a Freshman (High School) project. This was the first time I had ever learned basically anything about another country, slightly in depth, at least.
The moon and the star have nothing to do with Islam. When conquering Istanbul Sultan Fatih saw a moon and a star in the red blood of our soldiers. That's the reason why the flag is red an has a moon and a star.

The Ottoman flag was indeed a red flag with a moon and a star. But the star was different.
Ataturk wanted to change the flag, but when he saw the moon and the star shining on the blood of his soldiers he decided this would be the new flag.

Alot of people are today hypocrits. They say they believe in Allah, they sometimes do their prayers. But deep in their heart they don't care. That's what being modern is.
I believe in Allah deep within my heart, I don't do any prayers but I'm looking forward to learn it. That's what being a human is :D
@FatihMedia I beg to differ. I mean, I think your sentiment about religion is correct. Being human isn't about worshiping a deity that may or may not be somewhere. I am agnostic and don't tend to follow blindly. I think that being human is all about loving one another and making the world better. I think that if you need or want a deity to hide behind, then go for it. I am not looking for a debate over whose god could punch out the other, because I don't think that's what religion should be.

That is when it was declared a Republic. However, the Treaty of Lausanne was July 24, 1923.
