Doomsday was horrible. I think where the majority of post-apocalyptic films go wrong is that they typically attempt to recreate Mad Max in some form. Beyond Thunderdome pushed the series into complete and utter camp and walked a VERY fine line between rubbish and epic win (ultimately settling on the epic win side IF ONLY for "TWO GO IN. ONE COME OUT!")
Why aren't there more realistic dystopian films like Children of Men or The Road? Hollywood almost ALWAYS fucks up the apocalypse.
All the tattoos and mohawks is kind of plausible when you consider that they are all modern revivals of tribal thingiemummies. It's kind of like reverting to primitive society.
I agree with you about the laziness of filmmakers. The moment I see something not explained I'm taken out of the flick. I then understand it's made for 14 year old's who don't even think to question, 'why?"
You've got a great vibe. So...how much coffee DO you drink? :)
@uhfofie Damn...then you must have been a whirling dervish in the old days. NEVER DO COCAINE! You just might spontaneously combust...and that could get messy.
Yeah, why does the future always look like a leather bar in Hollywood? It's always so hokey.
You earned yourself a subscriber with those Matrix comments. The rave in the cave pissed me off to no end.
Heres something that has always pissed me off in action movies. The men are always sociopath murderers who dig muscle cars and women always have something to prove. Aslo, this fixation with one liners. I kid you not, the entirety of the "Fast and Furious" franchise is made up of one liners.
I was thinking the same things, some of these movies are just too outlandish, it's unbelieveable. I definitely hated how horrible the second and third matrix movies turned out, because the first was so good. Perhaps the only worse movie sin is the episodes I, II, and III to Star Wars. I can spew quotes from IV, V, and VI, but not a single from the prequels. Except maybe something Jar Jar says... Ugh.
Speaking of survivors, have you seen waterworld? And if so, what do you think of those survivors?
As I said, I think the similarities between escape from NY, road warrior and doomsday did not happen coincidentally but on purpose, as for example the two soldiers are named after the directors of those movies...
And don't get me wrong I think the island is a really good movie, but it could have been event better if they had spent a little more time and done those unrealistcs scenes better.
hahaha...fave'd. It's so funny that you mentioned mad max. It was on the other day and there's a scene where all the motorcyle guys are standing around and one of them is drinking a milkshake. He get's pissed at the dude next to him so he slurps up some in a straw and then spews pink milkshake all over his face. I was thinkin "a post apocolyptic world has strawberry milkshakes?". Yea, most mainstream movies blow. It seems like the only good films anymore are independent.
true for sure, although i am kinda ticked of that no one can make a friken happy ending anymore . . . i mean i respect the fact that not every movie needs to have one, but i feel it would be nice to have one every once in a while.
I totally agree, the small - or not so small - unrealistic details ruin movies. Did you watch "The Island"? It could have been far better if they had paid more attention to those details.
It's interesting that you mentioned Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior).
Imo Doomsday, to some degree, is a homage to the Mad Max movies and other movies like Escape from New York. Did you notice that two of the soldiers were named Miller and Carpenter?
its funny you mention "the island" i fucking love that movie, but i do agree that it can get pretty ridiculous at some times . . .( like scarlet johanson being a mother of a five year old! gimme a break, she's like my age ) yeah it is easy to pick up on the similarities between escape from NY, road warrior and doomsday, but i kinda forgive the the people that made escape from ny and road warrior, just because it was the 70's/80's and they didn't know any better.
well, if the film tried to be realistic, the survivors would live say like the Amish people; the majority of them would be farmers or fishermen, and mostly concerned with making ends meet. Although live expectancy would probably be around 35 years in lack of modern healthcare, the people would not be very sexy (unless you are have a very strange taste.)
Pan's Labyrinth is one of my all time favs! I have a buddy who does the whole Hollywood seen and so we did the red carpet shin dig when that first opened up over here and it was an Amazing movie!
In 10 years it'll look like shit because of the puppets and animation, but for now it was great!
Haha...hey I wanna go to that Zion night club! That looked like a pretty carnally fun place to be.
Ah really though...movies are less about artistic expression and more about appeasing demographics and moving a product aren't they? Do you ever watch really old movies? What do you think of those?
honestly i hate it when people try to go too artsy with their movies, like for instance: i really liked no country for old men, but its like no one can just make a fucking happy ending anymore, and woody harrelson did not need to even be in that movie! and that new movie about bob dylan, way too artsy, i think terry gilliam has just the right amount of artsyness. and i haven't really watched too many movies from before the 70's
I have a homework assignment for you then. I want you to go rent Metropolis. it's from 1927, so you may need to go to the library, but it'd be interesting to see what you think. I would love to see how your opinion of movies pre 1960 plays out against movies of the more modern era.
lol, i haven't thought about "cats" for a while. im not really into the whole play scene, although i thoroughly respect it. i pay a lot of attention to the cinematography and verbalization of films, i enjoy movies with a good message and true to life feel. have you ever seen the french movie "amelie"? it is a beautiful movie, kinda on the chick-flicky side, but lovely none the less.
Down in fuckin' Zion. You crack me up :D

Inglorius Basterds is a great film...directed by the great Tarantino. It does have a happy ending.

Apparently, during apocalyptic times, it's time to bust out the spikes and The Ramones, The Misfits, The Dead Kennedy's & other punk cd's & attire.

Did you watch "unbreakable?"
ThePoliticalJunkie 3 years ago
you mean the m. night shyamalan movie? of course i did, i fucking hate m. night, but in comparison to his other movies it was not too bad.
uhfofie 3 years ago
Haha...I thought the artistic framing of that movie was probably my fav of all time. That kind of artsy is fascinating to watch and I admire it.
I think what I mean by artsy more is the interpretation: the ability to make you think:
A Beautiful Mind, is a good modern example of giving us a new perception through art. I think that's the kind of artistic expression lacking.
If movies were plays, I like Phantom because it is deep and thoughtful, but most productions are Cats because it sells.

I can also highly recommend "amelie" and I'm a guy ;).
Concearning Metropolis: They recently found a copy in South America that is belived to be the original full-length version!
Pan's labyrinth is also a really good movie.
I did not like "unbreakable" this much either.
