This was one of the very first 45's I ever bought as a kid.. was 11 when this came out.. RIP Gerry.. You still resonate thru my musical tastes and today's music is so lame compared to the 70s.
flashes and bits of this songs melody and lyrics have been stuck in my hear for years as i've searched for it. thank you youtube and skytrax for letting me find this wonderful song.
Gerry was sooo gifted. He had such restraint on some songs that you just want to "belt out". I bought "City to City" the day it hit my local record store and never stopped appreciating the soul in his voice, that never would have been, were it not for the struggles he had. Despair births blues and is translated by the soul in the voice. I luv ya Gerry. Thank You for sharing your soul.
Just an observation, this is a pure playback, I'll guive an exeption to the Volcals maybe
and also there are more instruments Like acoustic guitar, the violins , percusion, beside the Sax, the Solo guitar , the Drums , the Bass and the Synth that you see here which aren't even synchronized (pretending playing live- like the drummer so obviouse.
Every Sat night 30 years ago I would offer to clear up our local hall after the disco if they played this song. The DJ would put this on for me 2 or 3 times while I danced and brushed the floor......We are now married and this is one of our songs. Thanks for the memories Gerry, RIP. X
This great song, and the wonderful 'Days Gone Down' are two of the songs that I remember from my youth ( now sadly gone).......thanks Gerry, and may you rest in peace now...
I listened to Gerry's City To City as a 14 year old, and every year I'd pull it out for one or two go-rounds: LP, then cassette, now iPod. Each year it grew on me, as I grew as a person. Then, Gerry died, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. A lost innocence--I thought he'd always be there. Although I never listened to him as I did, for instance, The Eagles or Aerosmith, he was always there. Until now. So now, I have spent hours researching this man. His indelible music. All the best and most talented people seem to die young and yet leave so much enjoyment behind for us all... They have problems - it's not their fault, yet I guess there will always be someone to criticise them...
all his songs were so talented musically and lyrically. Baker st was one that meant a lot to me at the time but now on reflection this is what i really remember when i think of him now. rip gerry thanks 4 all you gave us.
@leonaofficial I understand prolific as a synonym for successful and productiv a.o., that's what I went with anyway. That he was that is hardly debatable. I'm a bit sad that in my case Rafferty is a case of van Gogh-syndrome, being discovered and cherished by me only after his untimely death. Interesting also how he died in such a similar selfinflicted way as vG, not from a bullet wound but from an internal injury before his time nonetheless, by way of alcohol.
I came to listen to this song because it was used in a Doctor Who Confidential episode. Coincidentally both Gerry's daughter and one of the 10th Doctor's companions were named Martha!
@45rpmSINGLES It means he was a prolific songwriter and that he lived from '47 to '11, I bet Gerry was not exactly prolific at age 5. No one likes a smartass.
Raphael Ravenscroft was on sax, Liam Genocky on drums, bass guitar Gary Taylor, electric Piano and Synth: Tommy Eyre, Guitars: Hugh Burns, Percussion: Frank Ricotti, and Vocals/Acoustic Guitar: Gerry!! Perfect combination!!
my very favorite Rafferty song and top 5 all-time songs. The guitar riffs, the piano, the sax, all just meld perfectly. Rest In Peace Gerry and thanks for the memories.
Great great video, more people should check out other tunes besides Baker street. So much good stuff to enjoy. Thanks for posting. RIP Gerry. another great musician gone.
Magical video this , to see Gerry and the Band performing a Wonderful song. I love the lyrics especially " you`ve gotta die a little everyday to try and stay awake "
Gerry created memorable songs that stand the test of time. Baker Street still played regularly on radio and in tv adverts 30 plus years after the original recording.
He was a great talent and it is such a pity he did not derive the pleasure from that he should have. I hope he has now found peace.
This song has been on my IPod for years. I have always loved this and Days Gone Down from the great year of 1979. Gerry Rafferty.....thank you for your songs. RIP.

@eightiesguy62 You're right! I thought so too late last night as I listened over & over again! He does have an Irish/Scottish accent that comes through a bit in some of his songs. He was amazing though and unique in his own right!♥ Loved him for many years, just can't believe we keep losing the great ones so young♥ Peace♥
@msstevie1951 Yes he was very unique and was a great singer/songwriter...overlooked by many but was a real talent! ...I loved his song "Baker Street" the best of all of them....so much great music from the 70's!

This is FANTASTIC! It's so rare you see Gerry actually LIVE in person. He was quite shy in the 70's 80's and it was rare you saw him on T.V. or in any LIVE type of performances. Thanks again for posting and PLEASE post more live performances of one of the greatest singer and songwriters of the modern age. Thanks again!

Out on the street I was talkin’ to a man
He said "there’s so much of this life of mine that I don’t understand"
You shouldn’t worry yes that ain’t no crime
Cause if you get it wrong you’ll get it right next time (next time).
You need direction, yeah you need a name
When you’re standing in the crossroads every highway looks the same
After a while you can recognize the signs
So if you get it wrong you’ll get it right next time (next time).
leonaofficial 1 year ago 6
@leonaofficial Life is a liar yeah life is a cheat
It?ll lead you on and pull the ground from underneath your feet
No use complainin?, don?t you worry, don?t you whine
Cause if you get it wrong you?ll get it right next time (next time).
You gotta grow, you gotta learn by your mistakes
You gotta die a little everyday just to try to stay awake
When you believe there?s no mountain you can climb
And if you get it wrong you?ll get it right next time (next time).

smooth melody, the clarity is awsome, what a gem

Rafferty sounds like he's singing with three voices at the same time. That is truly a gift.

Hi skytrax1,
do you know if this recording was done by the BRT in Belgium?
I can vaguely remember seeing this on television years and years ago.

My all-time favorite song - I'm overjoyed that someone found a clean copy of the video. You've made my day!
