First off, Messi is probably better, but I disagree with your arguments. Hagi had speed. Even he said that was the basis of his game - explosive short bursts and tempo change. Second, his passes were way better than Messi''s. He was a playmaker first and foremost.

Even in the 90s they said football had evolved so much that players like Hagi were obsolete... then he won the UEFA cup as an old man.

If someone looked at the Danish national team in the 90s (except the last rounds of the 98 WC) they might say M. Laudrup was no great player, if they didnt know how well he was doing for his clubs.

Its all down to playing in an environment that suits you. There were many reasons Hagi's stay at Barca flopped (some his fault, some not), but that does not justify a general statement like yours.

Achievements in football are dependent upon so many factors.

If anything, Hagi was not as versatile, and needed a certain role/ team playing style for him to truly shine. But, he was also very unlucky at key points in his career.

At his best he did stuff I have never seen anyone else do.

As for your list, I have the deepest respect for Pele and Maradona. I would not put Ronaldo alongside them. As for Messi... maybe in a few years.
