Woody was buried with a set of post hole diggers in Union Cemetery.

Woody died in his sleep, in his own bed. That day, he was scheduled to give a talk to a group of 5th graders. Since he couldn't make it, Archie Griffin filled in for him.

Woody & Ann are buried in Union Cemetary,just north of the OSU campus.Whenever I visit,their headstone looks like an OhioState giftshop:scarlet & grey banners, buckeyes, etc. A fine tribute to a man who has been gone for 24 years now.

People would sometimesask Ann Hayesif shewas ever going todivorceWoody.Her reply was"Woody & Ihave been married for many tears...and *neither* of us haveever mentioned theword 'divorce'" (pause)  *Murder* on *many* occasions,but never divorce!"

After OSU'slast touchdown in the1968 50-14 rout of Michigan,the PAT team ran abroken play which degenerated intoan unsuccessful2point attempt.After the game,reporters asked himwhy he'd gone for two.Woody didn't want to embarass the PAT team, so he said "Because they wouldn't let me go for three!"

A lot of people don't know about Woody's service during WW2. He enlisted in the US Navy 7 months before Pearl Harbor.He could havespent thewar at Great Lakes,but he volunteered for sea duty.By VJ Day,he was Lieutenant Commander Hayes, the skipper of the destroyer escort USS Rinehart.

In the early 1970s Bo Schembechler had aserious heart attack.Woody sent him a real "Dutch uncle" letter, telling him to do exactly what the doctors said. The next

year Woody had a serious heart attack. Bo sent Woody's letter back to Woody

along with a note which read "A very wise man once sent me this latter-I hope

you'll follow his advice"

Woody was the first Big Ten coach to hire a black assistant,as well as the first to start a black quarterback.He was also the first head coach in the country to allow players to drink water during practices (on the advice of his team physician, Dr. Robert Murphy). No telling how many lives he saved.

Just North of the OSU campus is the Woody Hayes Atheletic Facility-quite possibly the best in the country. It did not cost the taxpayers of Ohio a single cent- all paid for by Woody's friends after he died-a great tribute to a great man.

People who badmouth Woody are those did not know him.The last eight years of his life, while it was not *illegal* to hold a charitiable event in central Ohio without Woody being in attendance, it simply wasn't done.

I never knew a man who cared less about money and more about people than Woody Hayes.

I remember watching the '78 Gator Bowl, it was a tough game for OSU and they were mounting a late drive for what would have been a winning field goal, when Bauman intercepted Schlichter's pass. I recall being utterly shocked when Hayes slugged him, Hayes being the head coach and all...and as far as I know, he never apologized for it. In truth, he was simply an angry, profane, rotten human being. It's amazing that in the last 30 years, sportsmanship has only gotten worse. Man of honor? Please..

Hayes might have been a great x's & o's coach, but he was a shitty human being. there's more than enough proof of his lousy disposition. , Leonard Downie, Jr., a former editor of The Washington Post (a student at Ohio State in the 1960s) spoke of witnessing Hayes scream at a player to take off his helmet and punching him.
