He was so handsome. I read an article how he suffered so much pain after his surgery. They did not have the technology back then like we have today. It's so sad. May he RIP!
I love rudolph valentino he was a beautiful man. Had great eyes, smile, perfect everything. Too bad he died so young, I heard he died of a perforated ulcer .
He had it all. There are over 6 billion people on the planet now, none that I have seen come close and there are many others that feel the same way!!! Clone this man! Cloning would probably not work. Rudy's personality and mannerisms were part of his charm. He was a fantasic actor!!
The actual official version is that Rudolph's father travelled extensively with the circus. It is strongly rumoured that Rudolph's father was really a Romani Gypsy, but because of the intense racial prejudice, Rudolph claimed to be Italian. After leaving the circus and settling in a permanent location, his father worked as a Vet, mainly with horses. Valentino was an excellent horseman and dancer. Italians do it better but Romani do it best!
@SirCliffRichards On this point, it's interesting that that Vlad fellow who looks a lot like Rudy and appeared in a Sheik costume at one of his memorial services is Romanian, Russian, or from somewhere in that vicinity of the world. I've also read that Rudy might be a descendant of one of those naughty Popes who had children several centuries ago. I read his father was an animal disease researcher and died of anthrax or something. Anyway, Rudy's fantastic whatever his background.
@SaffronBlonde Yes, he also sang "El Relicaro", the theme song for "Blood and Sand". You can hear it on The Rudolph Valentino Society's webpage. It is in Spanish, and much longer than "Kashmiri Song".
You must give him credit. He "had it". And he "had it" in the days before plastic surgery and cosmetic trickery that today's men have. He even taught himself to dance - without years of professional dance instruction. That is why he was so famous., he was a real natural. Noone since has equaled his fame and for years they sought a replacement which they never found
@jewelcat9 I read that one of the studios tried to make his brother, Alberto, into an actor, and that he underwent 7 cosmetic surgeries. Apparently Alberto did do some bit parts, but he didn't have what Rudy had. When you look at photos of Alberto before and after, his nose is much smaller. In the "Swanson and Valentino" video, his nose looks awful. He discusses Rudy's death. It's worth seeing--it might give you an idea about what Rudy's voice sounded like. Alberto was not as handsome.
my great grandfather was a friend a Valentino's, according to my father, and according to the story, Valentino was bigger than life. Supposedly, he would blow George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and any of today's heartthrobs out of the water. He was really handsome, kind, sensitive, and very intelligent, according to information passed down. And no, he was not gay, he was just very passionate and romantic.
I agree. I've seen more movies than I can count, both old and new, and I've seen plenty of leading men, and fine as they all are, I swear, not one of them can touch Valentino.
I think the men of his day who thought he was "effeminate" had a very limited idea of what a man is. Rudy was sensitive and beautiful, and Italian men are more open with their feelings, and to some macho American dopes that spelled "gay." It was REALLY dumb.
Yes, he was ahead of his time. He showed that a man can be both virile and sensitive, beautiful and strong. It wasn't understood back then -- remember that jackass who called him a "pink powder puff?"
It was the other side of the coin - women who were strong and independent (like "Moran of the Lady Letty") were considered "too mannish." Boy, people sure had a lot of evolving to do in those days.
...Maybe much of it was out of jealousy....They were so quick to judge...He made them feel uneasy because he didn't live a sterotype...The ladies as well were ridiculed..Lillian /Gish never married,,,She must have created a scandal..LOL!!..She looked as delicate as a flower yet extremely
strong and sure of herself..That is frightening to some when women are on their own and make it on their own...
Looks like Lillian was ahead of her time, too. People who are ahead of their time are always made to suffer for it and are appreciated only later on in retrospect.Yes, I agree that the negative reaction was, deep down, sometimes just jealousy of the person's courage.
Anyone with a new vision and the courage to carry it through are always questioned..and the acceptance can take years...Most people tend to follow whatever they are told to follow...yet there's always someone willing to
I have a couple of questions about the "pink powder puff" incident. I hear the author who wrote that insult didn't sign his name (coward) and also did not show up at the boxing ring after Rudy challenged him to a fight. Did he ever reveal his identity, and did he ever apologize? Just wondering.
I'VE FOUND RUDY'S TALKING VOICE!!!! (Just search for rudolph valentino in Google videos and select the interview done with the author of 'Dark Lover', I think it is under ARTINQUIRY. You will hear his voice at the very end!) I'm quite sure it is his voice! I don't think that they would fake it.
Leslie Flint did nto CHANNEL Valentino. Since Lelsie had the very rare gift of "independent direct voice" mediumship, Valentino's voice came through directly in the room.Leslie's lips did not move-in fact he was tied down and practically gagged while being tested for his ability(and no one EVER found fraud-thank you very much-with his gift. It's hard to explain how it worked, but if you take a look at Leslie Flint website, you can get a great deal of into and listen to more communication.Enjoy!
I visited that website but they don't have a recording of Rudy speaking. Is there somewhere else I can find one? (I listened to the Marilyn Monroe one and it sounded very fake, like a man doing a bad impersonation of her. I'm not denying Flint's gift, but that's how it sounded. I have no definite opinion on this sort of thing.)
Ok I am a HUGE fan of old hollywood. However, I really don't understand the attraction of valentino. I'm not knocking him whatsoever. I just don't personally see anything "special" about him.. I am honestly not trying to take praise away from the man you all seem to love. Just thought I would voice my honest opinion.
wow! i got the lyrics because i couldn't understand what he was saying, but only thefirst half was the same. i couldn't understand the secong half! fabuous song anyways. a treasure to be kept forever!
I went to visit Rudolph Valentino's crypt today, for the first time...it was so strange, what a short life he had. And like Norman Mailer said in his book: 1926--the year Valentino died--Marilyn Monroe was born: from one legend to another...
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my clip of silent movie star tobacco cards. They include: Rudolph Valentino, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Tom Mix, Jackie Coogan, Harold Lloyd and many more.
Anazing to see how loved Rudy still is after all those years! I thought I was the only crazy woman who thought he is absolutely adorable! Great tribute to a great star!
Gorgeous! Thank you. What a legend! He had a fascinatingly mobile and rather androgynous face. Was he perhaps bisexual? I know he was married. But it may have been a Rock-Hudson kind of studio marriage. Thank you!
It seems like the most truthful thing is that him being "gay" or "bisexual" was a false rumor made up by jealous men of the day cus he was known as the sexiest man of his time. Notice when somebody questioned his manliness he would get pissed off & challenge them to a boxing duel or something.
Thank you, polaris007, that sounds plausible. I was incidentally reading yesterday that people in the 1930s and 1940s also use to say that George Bernard Shaw (a notorious womaniser) was "gay" -- also, no doubt, out of envy for his enormous financial and theatrical success.
When gay people are eventually recognised as a ordinary and normal part of society, people will no longer use the word "gay" as a potential liable.
Ok I love this slide show, and I love your "MY Space" Rudy tribute too. I am a huge Rudy Fan like you, & would'nt mind being a Rudy Friend on your "My Space" I will contact you!! Rudy,Rudy the sexiest man ever ever!!!

Ignoring the recording technology of the time, his singing voice has a stage quality.
I mean not a great singer, but an actors voice..sweet, a little soulful. Thanks for sharing this window into the past.

Men have been so boxed in as to what they're to look like or their behavor.Sometimes I think it's worse these days,,because of the
overwhelming pressure on men to actually not be too attractive..too nice...too emotional...
There are so many sterotypes and rediculoous ah! demands...now..Rudy is an individual..His own person...and beautiful..
