In that situation, it isn't stealing. The members just want to know how the song flows & the words in order to sing it. I do feel that the artists, musicians, & production team are losing money in the process. At my church, usually someone has the CD that the song is on. So, they bring it to choir practice & put it in the CD player. The choir begins to learn & sing it from there. If you need outside help in learning it, you write down the words, look up the words, or find the song for yourself.
I appreciate you sharing this topic. Imagine if 1 popular song is emailed to every praise team member and band member across the country, just to learn for Sunday. How many $0.99 sales are lost???
Possible solution: With today's forms of media distribution (ie -iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody etc.), it's pretty easy to purchase 1 or 2 songs that your choir/ praise team may minister, without purchasing an entire CD. I think as ministry workers/ leaders, we should lead by example, sow seeds and support.
We actually have a day set aside for choir rehearsal. Any song that we have is listened to on that day and practiced on that day. So what you leave with is a cd of yourself practicing and singing the song. Because ministry is business, Gods business at that. We do the best we can to professionally conduct the content we use and share.
my question to the praise leader or music minister would be what does the artist whose songs you are downloading, burning to CD's, MP3's think of what you are doing. Bootleg is copy right infrigment which is a violation of law, I believe it is a federal offense, and your intent or ignorance of the law doesn't release you from the liability of the law.
Well I know that artist want their songs sung in churches wanting it to touch others. I see it kind of pormoting their music where others in the church might like it and want to buy the cd because that was their jam.
If the artists, producers, etc. are in the business for the money only, then they have the wrong motive, like the mone changers in the temple. Also when worship music is introduced to the congregation people go and buy the CD or download the single from itunes,so the exposure is a good thing for everybody concerned.
Would you say there is a difference between copying One or Two song versus copying the WHOLE CD? I sometimes use limewire, but I NEVER copy the Whole CD, only the song I want and If I want the whole CD I'll buy it. I'd rather not wasting money on a cd that only has One song that I like.
If nobody buys the record. It IS stealing!!! And alot of times. The praise leader/choir director is getting the song off limewire and then distributing it to the choir and musicians. So no one paid for the song. And in the Black church this is very prevelant. We are good for copying somebody's CD. Remember we used to ask somebody to make a tape for us. lol. And back in the day you would record the song off the radio onto tape. Hahaha! That was stealing too.
I know that it would seem that way but really any form of copying of material is illegal unless stated otherwise. I think that is legal to print out the words to songs on the internet. My niece is always working in little programs at her school. If they are going to learn a song, their teachers make paper copies of the songs and most of the time, she comes here to youtube to see how the original singer sings the song. Why van't the members of the church or praise group do the same?
my worship leader gives me money to download songs for her to listen to and teach us. now i don't see anything wrong with making copies of a song or songs for the choir to listen to to learn. a lot of folks dont know how to use itunes or limewire or whatever! idk, if im wrong im sorry but its not like im selling these cds for a profit. give me a better solution and i'll look into changing it!
Hey all I actually wanted to point everyone to a link that to me answers this question.
I do believe its illegal yes theres no one making profit but most people who download music everyday aren't making profit they do it because they know its free and free is better to majority of people than paying. The solution Itunes usually has every single for 99 cent. So I'm not sure what 99 cent would be out of anyone's pocket.
But if we take note on how we steward our money anyway 99 cent shouldn't be a complaint from anyone in the ministry. But also even if we have SAINTS that's strickly just use it for that purpose what do we say to those that now play that particular song on MP3's or IPOD meaning they downloaded their e-mail file and rock out to it on a daily basis? I have artist friends I don't think its right:( Here's the link. Illbehonest on youtube and look for Do we obey the Copyright Laws video
I think that it is illegal. I know that copying the song is for a good reason but it is illegal. The solution in my opinion is to listen to the song together or share the cd with members, They can learn the song together or write out the words to the song.
I used to think about that! Honestly, I don't believe it's stealing because it all depends on your motive. You're exactly right. The entire praise team isn't gonna buy 1 song lol. Artists are losing money though, period, because churches all around the world are singing the songs of different mainstream artists that they just heard on tv or the radio. In that case, NOBODY bought the cd/track. I hope that made sense cause I was just typing as I watched this vid lol.
i dont think thats stealing. thats like if u photocopy a chapter from a book. u own it, and u can copy it as much as u want. plus, they're not selling it, so they aren't making money from it. I agree with u. If anything, it's advertisement for the artist. People will hear the song and way want to buy the cd for themselves.
