I would never have liked this game, I have never liked RPG's where you click and the action is completed automatically, I like having full control of my actions, and thus having more control in what you do, and also in Bethesda's fallout 3 in some cases you need skill to kill an enemy, granted vats takes out that element of skill, but I didn't use that feature much, since I used the sniper most of the time to pick enemies off at a distance, and killed the rest as they came closer...
Honestly, I'm kinda glad that Bethseda bought the rights to FO3. Much more action, adventure, mods, options and of course, violence! Yay! But that's my opinion.

If i had any 1 wish i could have that was Fallout related... i'd wish for this to be released. I want a Co-op Fallout, FO3 like, or FO1/2 like, all of them were great games.
New Vegas was pretty good because the story is from Van Buren and Chris Avellone's company made the game instead of bethesda. Much of the Van Buren plot is there except the focus is taken off of Legion and put mostly on NCR and House. Fallout 3 just felt like bethesda was trying to fit an elder scrolls formula into a fallout mold, very akward.
van buren looks like it would have been really good game. fallout new vegas kicks ass but fallout 2 is the best. van buren would have prolly kicked fo3s ass, the fo3 fan boys that never played the originals of corse hate them because of graphics but fallout 2 had some amazing story and features. the cancled fallout 3 looks like it would have been really good

i dunno guys.. i remember playing f1 and f2 and it was just soo special. like no other game i've ever played. this series actually made me a fan of RPG's. and to be honest when f3 came out i was little dissapointed. but after a played it a little bit it got me so bad i couldnt turn off my xbox. I know its a letdown going from f1,2 style to shooter stile. but cmon! bethesda did quite a good job maintaining this athmosphere in the game! music, creatures, fractions, HUMOR, wierdness....

FO3 was Bethesda's testing game - it was set in DC in order to have Bethesda test FO without affecting the story. According to the FO:NV FAQ, people who worked on the originals will be on it as well. The main quarrel is that while players of the old FO games are too unwilling to try out something new, modern fanboys are ignorant of how the old gameplay worked, judge it by its cover, and are ungrateful of what Black Isle did to start the FO series. I think a middleground should be reached.

Bethesda was going for a hybrid between the RPG and FPS styles. A purely RPG game you must admit lacks the excitement of an FPS game and an FPS game lacks the intricuit storyline complexity and character/playstyle options of an RPG. They where clearly trying to merge the action filled combat of an FPS with the complex story and character build options of an RPG. I think they did a relatively good job of it too. Apparently so does obsidian the company working with them on fallout: new vegas.
I have all the Fallout games. Love them all, even Tactics. ^^ Oh! Don't have that one on the old xbox though. Either way... would have loved to see Van Buren released.

Well, you´re right black isle did what they could but if you take a look at modern gamers you will see: Mostly all that counts is the graphic.
Today nearly nobody want to play games wich are 2 years old because they look "crappy".
Look at the old Fallout games and tell me the graphic rocks (story, open-endedness etc. is nothing for modern gamers, the game needs to be simple in every way: Go everywhere and shoot anything)
Actually I dont think its so much because of the graphics issue but rather a gameplay issue. Looking at the older fallout games its obvious that the combat had a total lack of adrenalin stimulating action. Oh look I clicked on this guy bringing up a screen asking me where to aim... I told it to hit his face with my flame thrower... it did it yay! It just lacked the excitement which comes along with FPS style combat. When it comes to fighting FPS game play is king.
@kurisu925 You just made yourself sound like an idiot. Fallout was an RPG series. Combat isn't what defines a good RPG even if it can have a good system. (I liked Fallout 1 & 2's combat much harder then pausing the game and then shooting through VATS and taking 1/10th the damage whenever using it.
@Sephlyn Yea it was an RPG that used turn based combat while fallout 3 is an RPG that uses FPS style combat. Dumb ass I was talking about the combat style because it is the key difference between the games... It is the source of all the dumb ass arguments about which is better the old ones or fallout 3. And it is the reason why all such arguments are invalid. The games are not similar enough in game play to be compared with out a major bias being involved.
Actually, there were a lot of problems with the writing, story, and atmosphere in Fallout 3. They completely lost the Mad Max and spaghetti western portion of the atmosphere (opting to use the art-deco thing ad-nauseam- remember when it was done with subtlety in movies like Blade Runner and games like Fallout? Not anymore!) and the story took itself so god-damned seriously it was awful. I actually have friends who don't know that Fallout is a comedy because they only played 3.
Oh, and if the games can't be compared- or you and all the other "Fallout 3" fans have such a problem with the way Fallout was done- then why didn't Bethesda just MAKE ANOTHER GOD DAMNED GAME? Why the fuck is it assumed that if a game is good it needs a sequel- even if that sequel has nothing to do with it! Why couldn't Bethesda created their own god-damned IP? Holy shit, no one asked George Lucas- "Please! Please do a Star Wars sequel- just don't make it science fiction this time!"

Also, none of that addresses my point. If you're going to remove 60% of the black comedy, the gameplay, and 60% of the atmosphere- then why not just develop your own god-damned game?
@EatMyPwn They kept the dark humor they just didn't put it into the dialogue as much. Didn't you see the skeleton with its head stuck on a light above a care that was between two ramps with a crashed motorcycle on one side down in the sewer? The game was full of things like that. I think they got the atmosphere about as right as they could. I mean switching from 2d to 3d makes it a little hard to keep the game having the exact same atmosphere.
When people can't tell that Fallout is supposed to be funny, then too much of the humor is missing. And I don't mean in that "Fargo" kind of way- people who genuinely understand black humor just don't see nearly as much of it in Fallout 3.
Secondly, the switch to 3D doesn't mean that the ground has to look like monster skin and complete over-saturation of the art-deco theme. Don't get me wrong- I love art-deco in science fiction, but it's just flat out unsubtle in Fallout 3.
@EatMyPwn What do you mean they cant tell? Ever sneak up on a couple of super mutants to hear what they say to eachother? Hell one time I was sneaking in the sub way and noticed there where two super mutants in the next room and a deactivated robot in the room I was in. So I activated the robot hoping to see it shoot at the mutants... nope it whent and asked for thier tickets they made fun of it some got bored and smashed it.

Yeah, Fallout 2 is nice aswell, I havn't finished it yet. I just think that Fallout 2 contains too many "easter eggs", even though they're funny. Just makes the game unserious, compared to Fallout 1.

Sure the earlier games were fun, but i personally think that Bethesda Studios did a great job of recreating the Fallout franchise, even though its a first person rpg, not a birds eye view. I think that the first person is actually even better, since bird's eye view was getting boring, and not very modern
they turned it into FPS. I wouldn't have minded if it were new groundbreaking game engine but they used an old one from Oblivion. So for me it's essentially like Oblivion with a Fallout mod. Hence, Bethesda fucked it up for me. I'm a purist. I prefer if they stick to the same playing style (3rd person RPG/Turn based strategy) but maybe with a better game engine.
I completely agree. They took gave us a game with wooden characters with stiff voices and emotions, a blank, colorless landscape. If they had made it anything like vampire the masquerade, I would have been thrilled, but Fallout 3 is just a dull action game to me.

Bethesda was going for a hybrid between the RPG and FPS styles. A purely RPG game you must admit lacks the excitement of an FPS game and an FPS game lacks the intricuit storyline complexity and character/playstyle options of an RPG. They where clearly trying to merge the action filled combat of an FPS with the complex story and character build options of an RPG. I think they did a relatively good job of it too. Apparently so does obsidian the company working with them on fallout: new vegas.

@ all Your meaning is that Fallout 3 is sooo cool, but my meaning is that Fallout 3 is complete bullshit between Fallout 1 and 2. Fallout 1 and 2 are milestones in the computer game history. As this games were published, there are no game which was nearly matchable. Fallout 3 is a general First Person Shooter with RPG-Elements. What would you say if youre loving game series changes into another genre? I hate Bethesda for what they have done, but i hate EA too, for killing Command and Conquer! :)

I Hated Fallout 2 just because of its confusing gameplay ( just didn´t know how to use the VATS) O.o

This was meant to be fallout 3 long before the one we have now but they never got to finish it. Then bethesda wanted to make one and got the rights to. That fallout 3 is the one we see now. Well, you´re right black isle did what they could but if you take a look at modern gamers you will see: Mostly all that counts is the graphic.
Today nearly nobody want to play games wich are 2 years old because they look "crappy".
Look at the old Fallout games and tell me the graphic rocks (story, open-endedness etc. is nothing for modern gamers, the game needs to be simple in every way: Go everywhere and shoot anything)

Actually I dont think its so much because of the graphics issue but rather a gameplay issue. Looking at the older fallout games its obvious that the combat had a total lack of adrenalin stimulating action. Oh look I clicked on this guy bringing up a screen asking me where to aim... I told it to hit his face with my flame thrower... it did it yay! It just lacked the excitement which comes along with FPS style combat. When it comes to fighting FPS game play is king.

@kurisu925 You just made yourself sound like an idiot. Fallout was an RPG series. Combat isn't what defines a good RPG even if it can have a good system. (I liked Fallout 1 & 2's combat much harder then pausing the game and then shooting through VATS and taking 1/10th the damage whenever using it.

Dumb ass I was talking about the combat style because it is the key difference between the games... It is the source of all the dumb ass arguments about which is better the old ones or fallout 3. And it is the reason why all such arguments are invalid. The games are not similar enough in game play to be compared with out a major bias being involved.

Actually, there were a lot of problems with the writing, story, and atmosphere in Fallout 3. They completely lost the Mad Max and spaghetti western portion of the atmosphere (opting to use the art-deco thing ad-nauseam- remember when it was done with subtlety in movies like Blade Runner and games like Fallout? Not anymore!) and the story took itself so god-damned seriously it was awful. I actually have friends who don't know that Fallout is a comedy because they only played 3.

No, they didn't. And even if they did- does that change the fact that they took it too seriously? The Star Wars prequels could have had the same exact "basic plot-line" they did and still have been awesome- but they weren't. Because the dialogue and details were lame.
Also, none of that addresses my point. If you're going to remove 60% of the black comedy, the gameplay, and 60% of the atmosphere- then why not just develop your own god-damned game?

@EatMyPwn They kept the dark humor they just didn't put it into the dialogue as much. Didn't you see the skeleton with its head stuck on a light above a care that was between two ramps with a crashed motorcycle on one side down in the sewer? The game was full of things like that. I think they got the atmosphere about as right as they could. I mean switching from 2d to 3d makes it a little hard to keep the game having the exact same atmosphere.

When people can't tell that Fallout is supposed to be funny, then too much of the humor is missing. And I don't mean in that "Fargo" kind of way- people who genuinely understand black humor just don't see nearly as much of it in Fallout 3.
Secondly, the switch to 3D doesn't mean that the ground has to look like monster skin and complete over-saturation of the art-deco theme. Don't get me wrong- I love art-deco in science fiction, but it's just flat out unsubtle in Fallout 3.

Hell one time I was sneaking in the sub way and noticed there where two super mutants in the next room and a deactivated robot in the room I was in. So I activated the robot hoping to see it shoot at the mutants... nope it whent and asked for thier tickets they made fun of it some got bored and smashed it.

Sure the earlier games were fun, but i personally think that Bethesda Studios did a great job of recreating the Fallout franchise, even though its a first person rpg, not a birds eye view. I think that the first person is actually even better, since bird's eye view was getting boring, and not very modern

they turned it into FPS. I wouldn't have minded if it were new groundbreaking game engine but they used an old one from Oblivion. So for me it's essentially like Oblivion with a Fallout mod. Hence, Bethesda fucked it up for me. I'm a purist. I prefer if they stick to the same playing style (3rd person RPG/Turn based strategy) but maybe with a better game engine.

I completely agree. They took gave us a game with wooden characters with stiff voices and emotions, a blank, colorless landscape. If they had made it anything like vampire the masquerade, I would have been thrilled, but Fallout 3 is just a dull action game to me.
