I had nevere even heard of this lady before finding her on You Tube on Whats My Line. I would sooner see these clips of her, than any of this X Factor , Master Chef in the Jungle on Ice or any other rubbish that portrays for entertainment in the UK today.
Ms. Francis is such a great sport! Very talented, yet very unassuming and self-deprecating. She sounded rather badly, but both she and the audience had a good laugh. Nice lady!
@shoredude2 The title character in her play, Evalyn Dally, is a former professional trombonist. Arlene was known for putting a good deal of preparation into her stage work, and in this case, it involved learning the trombone. The song that she learned for the show was the jazz standard "After You've Gone." You can see the woman who gave her trombone lessons in the WML "Jazz Trombonist" clip, which, I might add, is hilarious!!!
@mhb659221 Yes, she plays Cole Porter's "Night And Day" in this clip - it was a one-off, just for IGAS. For "Mrs. Dally," she also had to learn "After You've Gone."
Norman Paris, the leader of the combo that played on IGAS for many years, was a fixture in the nightclub/supper club scene for many years. He was married to Dorothy Loudon, the Broadway musical actress. He and his trio also appeared on Arlene's "Home" show, and there is footage of them performing on that program here on YT.
Cole Porter's "Night and Day" will never be the same again! The trombone is a rather difficult instrument to play. Unlike other wind instruments, the trombone does not have keys or valves - you have to put the slide in the precise position to get the right note.
I just saw a clip of What's My Line where they had the lady who taught her how to play the trombone. I guess the two shows crossed over from time to time because the same people show up.
AWESOME! Thank you so much for re-uploading this! Wonderful job! Laughing with her of course, not at her, Arlene is so freaking funny! Thank you thank you thank you!
She's an incredibly good sport here, consistent with the personal warmth she exhibited throughout her career. Whan an angel!
