R.I.P Dale. You are missed by millions. Great job by the safety crew for getting to dale as fast as they could to help him. Racing will never be the same without him.
@MurphyMonster la dee do dah HOLY CRAP! whoa.. missed him! OMG Dont fall on me, don't fall on me, AWW MAN, Dude, whyd you spin in front of me, I'll go this way. FINALLY IM FREE. lol
I FLAT SPOTTED THE TIRES, BUT I MADE IT THROUGH. that was schrader saying that.
You know, looking at the carnage of this accident, being accustomed to what we see today with the COT, to me it looks like we're lucky Stewart and Martin weren't injured or worse. You can really see how these older car's cockpits weren't as strong as the ones today.
I know people think - and I can totally understand why - that if Dale Earnhardt had been caught up in the Big One, then he'd still be alive today. Well yeah, maybe. But that's like saying if Dale, at the age of 49 and after completing a great Indian Summer, had hung it up at the end of the previous season, then he'd still be alive. And it rules out the tragic but plausible possibility that, say, in October 2004, Dale might get caught up in a traffic accident and be fatally wounded. Sorry, but..
@trainz34 - This is racing. You can't place blame when racing at such high speeds. Every driver knows the risk they're taking every time they get behind the wheel. I remember thinking how ironic it was that no one was killed in the 'Big One', yet Dale Sr. was killed in what appeared to be a much smaller accident. Although it wasn't 'smaller', it was direct impact with the concrete barrier at around 200 mph!
Settle down im joking. I know all about racing and its dangers. Earnhardt shoud not have cut off Marlin like he did on the final lap. No one is to blame.
@Weezy10580 I would hate to say good comes out of death (and it never does), but if Dale Earnhardt had never been killed, there would be no such thing as "safer barriers" and the CoT that we know today. "Safe measures" as we know it wouldn't have been taken to protect these drivers. Someone else would've had to go through the same thing that happened on this day and much later than 2001 for NASCAR to figure out what was needed to be done. Dale died to help protect the lives of the drivers today.
phxracing42 is right Dale slammed that wall doing 200 and at that time they didn't have a neck to head brace that u put between your helmet/head and your shoulder. it took 4 NASCAR drivers deaths for NASCAR to make this a rule! fail!!
I like Stewart and I have a video game on this and it has this crash u have to get out of and u r the number 4 car and u are in 22 or 23 not in 12 or 14 place.
@DanielSong39 the differnece between stewart and earnhardts crash are when stewart flipped he was slowly losing energy and it was being taken away each time he flipped until he stopped....with earnhardt all that energy just stopped and earnhardt flung foward in the car....he went from 200 to 50 in an instant..stewart keep slowing down slower
my only wish is to get in a time machine and tell dale Earnhardt: "Hey, with around 25 or 26 to go, you'll see a car fly and then a BIG wreck.... yeah.... please get in that wreck.".......
This was the worst day in nascar for many people and many reasons. This crash ruined a lot of people's chances and Dale's Death....... I absolutely hate the new cars of tommorrow they sorta ruined nascar for me but I do like the new rules but the should go back to the old cars but try to make them safer
its amazing to think that if Dale Sr.'s car was just an inch further to the right that he would have been involved in this wreck, and we'd all be looking at a completely different NASCAR ......
I have to say, it's nice seeing the grandstands jam packed. I hope this year's (2001) 500 comes close. I know in the last July race the backstretch grandstand was completely empty.
I was 17 years old and a senior in high school when me and my Dad went to this race. We sat in the Lund tower (as always some of the best seats you can see the whole track and watch the boys get three wide on turn 2) and this wreck was right in front of us I mean i got hit in the face with a small peice from of the cars and while Tony was upside down in the air the #3 drove right under him... This was amazing to see right infront of your face, still wish that Dale Sr wrecked in this pile up
People who watch auto-racing of any kind to see accidents don't know the first thing about racing. I watch racing to watch competition, plus I am Stewart fan so seeing this wasn't the best day to be a fan of the old #20.
I never want to see anyone injured or killed in any sport.
@THEPARTYGUY6767 he drove the 22 until 2003, and then in 04 he drove the #0 car. i dont know who he drove for from 05-06, but he drove the 4 in 07. after the team shut down, he was left without a ride
Dale Sr.'s crash has obviously overshadowed this one, but in terms of how many cars were involved and how damaged the cars were afterward, this is one of the biggest Big Ones ever at Daytona
I don't know if many people have ever thought of this, or if they have and haven't bothered to post it, or they have posted it, and I just never knew. Anyway...

i loved dale sr, but he did drive extremely dirty, and only got away with it because he had his own persona. i dont think thats fair. petty didnt race like that.
with that being said.... whatever happened to Steve Park?
@555MARCUS666 park got realeased from dei in 03, and drove for rcr for the rest of the season. he was released (i think) from them, and went to the truck in 05. he then drove the camping world (now k&n pro series) and then he raced daytona in cup this year. he raced a truck race or 2 this year, and there are more plans for him in the 36 car this year
@Dalejr88rox What i wanna know is what ever happened to Sterling Marlin...I know he had to have hated him self after bump/rubbing Dale leading to the wreck???
@555MARCUS666 lol AGREED But rubbing is racing. Think about this-Dale did alote of wrecking but when ppl wrecked him he didn bitc23 he just walked away all cool and let it go...I think rubbing and bumping is ok but when you wreck some one just to wreck them thats when something needs to be done...My self i hate NaPcar I race sprints and IMCAs-I dont care what you give me ill never run pavement-These days its all about poultices- Part of racing is recovering when you get bumped out of line.
@555MARCUS666 too right, you couldnt of said it better but for me I always hated Dale Sr, when i was first watching nascar I was a Gordon fan and I still am today.
Dale Sr. was not dirty. he only recked someone on purpose 1 time. I drive jus lik him at the tracks i drive at. He belave in stickin his front bumper in where there was an openin and held it there.
Dale Sr. was not dirty. he only recked someone on purpose 1 time. I drive jus lik him at the tracks i drive at. He belave in stickin his front bumper in where there was an openin and held it there. And Park had a bad head ingery in a race
@555MARCUS666 I think with Dale Earnhardt, it's easy to have a skewed opinion because Nascar didn't showcase drivers off the track the way we see it today. Steve Park honestly was never the same after a BIG impact crash took him out of Nascar for due to a severe head injury, also in 2001. It was a Busch Series race where his steering wheel came off his car and lapped car careened him. It was during a caution I think or he might not be alive today. But like I said, never quite the same.
@nascar08freak park got released from dei in 03, and drove for rcr for the rest of the season. he was released (i think) from them, and went to the truck in 05. he then drove the camping world (now k&n pro series) and then he raced daytona in cup this year. he raced a truck race or 2 this year, and there are more plans for him in the 36 car this year
I remember seeing this wreck and thinking Tony Stewart coulda died looking at the way he flew around....after seeing that I didn't think much about what happened on the final lap, but we all know what happened there.
What if.... Dale Sr. did NOT escape the crash and he was involved in it. He would be with us today and retired maybe a 8 or 9 time champion. Something to think about.
marlin(40) bumped into sr.(3) and sr. slid into rusty wallace(2) and thats what made him go up into the wall wich killed him i was there and asked my dad if sr. was okay, and we were listening to the announcements... and they said he was legally dead and i started to cry we are the only ones in the world (possibly) with that whole race on tape. and now with my 72 AMP ENERGY cans i am a proud dale jr.(88) fan
Starting at 8:40, there's a brighter colored car near the wall behind the wreck that somehow makes it through with cars rolling in front of him and alongside him.
He spikes the brakes hard to miss the car flipping in front of him, then turns hard to the wall to miss the cars slamming into eachother on his left side, then brakes again to miss the car slamming the wall in front of him and finally guns it to make it out without a scratch. Really amazing driving.
this wasn't the big one

Its weird, look how close Sr. was getting into this wreck. Odd to think that had he gotten involved he could be alive today.

Can you imagine landing and taking off at the airport, and seeing Tony Stewart at a higher altitude than you are.

I remember seeing this wreck and thinking Tony Stewart coulda died looking at the way he flew around....after seeing that I didn't think much about what happened on the final lap, but we all know what happened there.

I'm not trying to be mean, but if Dale Earnhardt was involved in the big one, he wouldn't of died.

What if.... Dale Sr. did NOT escape the crash and he was involved in it. He would be with us today and retired maybe a 8 or 9 time champion. Something to think about.

Its so wierd how Stewart flipped so many times and yet there was, technically a small amount of damage,at least, for what happened to him. wierd!

marlin(40) bumped into sr.(3) and sr. slid into rusty wallace(2) and thats what made him go up into the wall wich killed him i was there and asked my dad if sr. was okay, and we were listening to the announcements... and they said he was legally dead and i started to cry we are the only ones in the world (possibly) with that whole race on tape. and now with my 72 AMP ENERGY cans i am a proud dale jr.(88) fan

Who was driving that yellow car that made an amazing escape through the wreck at 8:44? Was it Schrader?
ShotgunDolphin 1 year ago
@ShotgunDolphin
Drpepper687 1 year ago
@ShotgunDolphin That was Schrader. Bright yellow 38 mnm's car. Simply amazing.
