  • this wasn't the big one

  • Thanks for reply

  • @4:00 he told stewart something 14. irony

  • 17 CARS

  • @HANKHILLization It was officially 19.

  • if only dale had been caught up in that wreck...

  • @V8power923 youre right. He could of survived this wreck and for some reason not survive that wreck

  • "shit were in this." nobody caught that at the very end? kinda surprised!

  • I love crashing!!! Boom!

  • Nascar sucks now they want to do away with the 2 car dango and go back to this crap.

  • Mark Martin is in it.

  • R.I.P Dale. You are missed by millions. Great job by the safety crew for getting to dale as fast as they could to help him. Racing will never be the same without him.

  • I remember watching this race and thought all the drivers were dead or injured so bad they would not be able to race anymore.

  • Who else misses the old NASCAR theme song?

  • @Navohk i do

  • @Navohk I agree, that old theme was Awesome.

  • 8:40 Watch the yellow car. He dodges Burton, goes under Stewart, and then dodges the other way to miss Gordon and Martin. Schraders such a badass.

  • @MurphyMonster Schrader is a BADASS. I never saw that

  • @MurphyMonster la dee do dah HOLY CRAP! whoa.. missed him! OMG Dont fall on me, don't fall on me, AWW MAN, Dude, whyd you spin in front of me, I'll go this way. FINALLY IM FREE. lol

I FLAT SPOTTED THE TIRES, BUT I MADE IT THROUGH. that was schrader saying that.

  • You know, looking at the carnage of this accident, being accustomed to what we see today with the COT, to me it looks like we're lucky Stewart and Martin weren't injured or worse. You can really see how these older car's cockpits weren't as strong as the ones today.

  • I wish Dale Sr. was in that crash... He still might be alive today

  • I know people think - and I can totally understand why - that if Dale Earnhardt had been caught up in the Big One, then he'd still be alive today. Well yeah, maybe. But that's like saying if Dale, at the age of 49 and after completing a great Indian Summer, had hung it up at the end of the previous season, then he'd still be alive. And it rules out the tragic but plausible possibility that, say, in October 2004, Dale might get caught up in a traffic accident and be fatally wounded. Sorry, but..

  • 1:54 your welcome :)

  • @XimbetterthanuXx what do you mean by that

  • @terp4life59 skip to the crash

  • WHY COULDNT DALE EARNHARDT BLOW A ENGINE OR SOMETHING?

  • If only Dale got into this wreck, if he would have he would still be alive today.

  • @MovieCriticCinema but he couldve died in this.

  • @5markmartinfan1212 but nobody died in this crash.

  • if only dale was in this wreck... maybe he could still be here.

  • who said "i made it through"at 4:11

  • @KerrCo1 Sounds like K. Shrader..u can see him at the top of the track gettin by the 4

  • @Weezy10580 whats that supposed to mean? he almost saved his life

  • @Dalejr88rox If Robby wouldnt have caused that monster wreck the circumstances would have been different at the end.

Ironic that moron Robby ends up at RCR

  • @Dalejr88rox Because Weezy thinks if the Big One didnt happen Sr wouldnt have died and no offense but Marlin Shouldve been involved here too. :(

  • No it was Sterling Marlins fault.

  • @trainz34 Robby caused the big one, drivers would have been in totally different spots if the wreck never happened.

  • @trainz34 - This is racing. You can't place blame when racing at such high speeds. Every driver knows the risk they're taking every time they get behind the wheel. I remember thinking how ironic it was that no one was killed in the 'Big One', yet Dale Sr. was killed in what appeared to be a much smaller accident. Although it wasn't 'smaller', it was direct impact with the concrete barrier at around 200 mph!

  • Settle down im joking. I know all about racing and its dangers. Earnhardt shoud not have cut off Marlin like he did on the final lap. No one is to blame.

  • @Weezy10580 I would hate to say good comes out of death (and it never does), but if Dale Earnhardt had never been killed, there would be no such thing as "safer barriers" and the CoT that we know today. "Safe measures" as we know it wouldn't have been taken to protect these drivers. Someone else would've had to go through the same thing that happened on this day and much later than 2001 for NASCAR to figure out what was needed to be done. Dale died to help protect the lives of the drivers today.

  • @Weezy10580 he lost control of his car and hit Schrader so its not Gordons fault. It might be Sterling?

  • @Weezy10580 it wasnt eve robby that he spun off the bumper of and it's not their fault either!

  • @Chihuahuaman2 You're an idiot.

  • @Weezy10580 how?

  • @Weezy10580 you cant blame robby. he got loose

  • @Weezy10580 you obviously know nothing about racing drafting aerodynamics and physics

and dont you ever blame an accidental death on an innocent man

  • @Weezy10580 it was sterlin marlin

  • phxracing42 is right Dale slammed that wall doing 200 and at that time they didn't have a neck to head brace that u put between your helmet/head and your shoulder. it took 4 NASCAR drivers deaths for NASCAR to make this a rule! fail!!

  • I like Stewart and I have a video game on this and it has this crash u have to get out of and u r the number 4 car and u are in 22 or 23 not in 12 or 14 place.

  • i remember this....... its shocking that he took a blow worse Earnhardt Sr and he survived

  • they didnt mention jeff's name this whole crash im surprised

  • tony Stewart is the best daytona driver

  • is it just me or back then every time bobby crashed he got set on fire.

  • i dont think that this is the big one the big one is sr dy- nvm you now what i mean

  • DW speaking over Mike Joy, what else is new?

  • Why couldnt Dale sr. blow his engine on lap 45

  • damn i miss seeing dale sr up there on the leader boards..

  • @wrestlingfan65 I was just thinking that too =(

  • This was not the "big one" of this race, the "big one" in this race was the last lap wreck where Dale Sr. died!

  • @DFDSFUEIFH no well yes and no big one for nascar not big one for the race

  • @darkfang776 That's what I meant. LOL.

  • Comment removed

  • obviously he didn't because Dale died.

  • Stewart's crash looked worse than Earnhardt's. He, too, went straight into the wall at full speed and did a few backflips on top of that...

  • @DanielSong39 the differnece between stewart and earnhardts crash are when stewart flipped he was slowly losing energy and it was being taken away each time he flipped until he stopped....with earnhardt all that energy just stopped and earnhardt flung foward in the car....he went from 200 to 50 in an instant..stewart keep slowing down slower

  • 15-8-3 fuck yeah

  • 0:52 What Hood?

  • 1:51 mar...mar...mar..martin

  • 4:08 - 4:17 , i'm pretty sure thats not stewarts radio ..... XD

  • I had no idea viagra sponsored Mark Martin back in 2001 D: I only have memories from 2005 and so on lol .

  • @jraybay yep, i think that was the first year he had Viagra as his sponsor

  • The race Dale Earnhardt died

  • my only wish is to get in a time machine and tell dale Earnhardt: "Hey, with around 25 or 26 to go, you'll see a car fly and then a BIG wreck.... yeah.... please get in that wreck.".......

  • "yep, im flying, this can not be good"

  • massive

  • I HATE KEVIN HARVICK

  • @stinngs120 i hate him also! i like to call him Kevin "Carwreck"....

  • Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's....Tony Stewart?

    O_o

  • if only Sr. was collected in this wreck, he wouldn't have been in position he was at the end of the race.

  • This was the worst day in nascar for many people and many reasons. This crash ruined a lot of people's chances and Dale's Death....... I absolutely hate the new cars of tommorrow they sorta ruined nascar for me but I do like the new rules but the should go back to the old cars but try to make them safer

  • man how come this doesn't happen anymore....the good days of nascar

  • @brent31795 your an idiot, as fun as it was to watch wrecks, the good days of nascar were dangerous

  • #5 TERRY Labonte not Bobby 5:10

  • during the red flag sr told richard that if nascar didnt do something to the cars someone is gonna get killed.....

  • @TheMagiclaker32 yeah i saw that on "The Day"

  • @TheMagiclaker32 Ironic

  • the 4 and the 20 car ... huh huh

  • WTF? Is that a Peugeot? 5:00

  • its amazing to think that if Dale Sr.'s car was just an inch further to the right that he would have been involved in this wreck, and we'd all be looking at a completely different NASCAR ......

  • Tony got a dislocated shoulder from this. He actually went to the same hospital as Dale Sr.

  • I have to say, it's nice seeing the grandstands jam packed. I hope this year's (2001) 500 comes close. I know in the last July race the backstretch grandstand was completely empty.

  • This was 10 years ago today

  • I was 17 years old and a senior in high school when me and my Dad went to this race. We sat in the Lund tower (as always some of the best seats you can see the whole track and watch the boys get three wide on turn 2) and this wreck was right in front of us I mean i got hit in the face with a small peice from of the cars and while Tony was upside down in the air the #3 drove right under him... This was amazing to see right infront of your face, still wish that Dale Sr wrecked in this pile up

  • 7:50 - 8:00 that wasn't enough to save Dale a few laps later =(

  • People who watch auto-racing of any kind to see accidents don't know the first thing about racing. I watch racing to watch competition, plus I am Stewart fan so seeing this wasn't the best day to be a fan of the old #20.

I never want to see anyone injured or killed in any sport.

  • I think you all need to realize that Tony could have been killed as well, that's pretty scary, Tony didn't need another car to hit him.

  • maybe if dale would have got caught up in that wreck, he would still be alive today

  • Tony Stewart wanted his car to go fast, but I don't think that he wanted it to fly!

  • 9:14 "Shit we're in this!"

  • Wow, Tony Stewart was way up in the air. This wreck was crazy.

  • @ThreeRiversRC what exactly did hes spotter say after 3wide inside and before the camera cut out ?

  • i thought Kevin LePage drove the 4 car.

  • what ever happend to ward burton

  • @THEPARTYGUY6767 he drove the 22 until 2003, and then in 04 he drove the #0 car. i dont know who he drove for from 05-06, but he drove the 4 in 07. after the team shut down, he was left without a ride

  • i wish Dale had been in that wreck then one of america's hero's would still be with us

  • Fire under Labonte's hood? WHAT HOOD?

  • @Pabig93 thats what i was thinking like can u not see there's no hood there lol

  • Why do people like this? Dale died! R.I.P.

  • thumbs up if robby gordon and michael waltrip should quit nascar and go to demolition derby?

  • i wish sr was involved in this crash ;( rip dale

  • i always thought this wreck was at las vegas on the front stretch

  • OOH

  • Dale Sr.'s crash has obviously overshadowed this one, but in terms of how many cars were involved and how damaged the cars were afterward, this is one of the biggest Big Ones ever at Daytona

  • kinda erie at 6:33 ......RIP Dale

  • I don't know if many people have ever thought of this, or if they have and haven't bothered to post it, or they have posted it, and I just never knew. Anyway...

There was some intense wind down the backstretch that day. If I'm correct, Stewart was a lap down at this time too. That wind was probably what flipped the car over at a possible lower speed than most flips occur at.

Just a thought. Could be wrong.

  • Good old nascar

I remember watching this when i was 6

  • HOLY BALLS! I can remember this being the biggest wreck i'd ever seen, and the turmoil that happened during the red flag...something about Sterling Marlin getting out of his car and trying to pull the fender out from rubbing against the tire or w/e. Awesome race, with a sad result.

  • @KSE828 I've seen only one bigger wreck that took out half the field at talladega a year after this

  • @KSE828 the thing with sterling was 2002

  • @Dalejr88rox close enough.

  • @Dalejr88rox I saw the 20 fliped over

  • Mike: There's Fire Underneath the Hood Of Bobby Labonte's Car

    Me: What Hood?

  • If Dale got involved, Martin would FINALLY get his 500 (2007, almost but Kevin Harvick inched him)

  • That was the same race where Dale Sr. was killed?

  • 2:33 Mark is through the wreck and he hit the grass and lost it

  • @ 0:31 it's the big one.

  • i loved dale sr, but he did drive extremely dirty, and only got away with it because he had his own persona. i dont think thats fair. petty didnt race like that.

with that being said.... whatever happened to Steve Park?

  • @555MARCUS666 park got realeased from dei in 03, and drove for rcr for the rest of the season. he was released (i think) from them, and went to the truck in 05. he then drove the camping world (now k&n pro series) and then he raced daytona in cup this year. he raced a truck race or 2 this year, and there are more plans for him in the 36 car this year

  • @Dalejr88rox What i wanna know is what ever happened to Sterling Marlin...I know he had to have hated him self after bump/rubbing Dale leading to the wreck???

  • @Dalejr88rox Also he ALWAYS got injuries, like Darlington 2001.

  • @Dalejr88rox he did pretty good finished 13th at daytona last race

  • @555MARCUS666 lol AGREED But rubbing is racing. Think about this-Dale did alote of wrecking but when ppl wrecked him he didn bitc23 he just walked away all cool and let it go...I think rubbing and bumping is ok but when you wreck some one just to wreck them thats when something needs to be done...My self i hate NaPcar I race sprints and IMCAs-I dont care what you give me ill never run pavement-These days its all about poultices- Part of racing is recovering when you get bumped out of line.

  • @555MARCUS666 too right, you couldnt of said it better but for me I always hated Dale Sr, when i was first watching nascar I was a Gordon fan and I still am today.

  • @555MARCUS666

yea dale drove way to dirtty

then he died and everybody all the sudden loved him

    WTF?

  • Dale Sr. was not dirty. he only recked someone on purpose 1 time. I drive jus lik him at the tracks i drive at. He belave in stickin his front bumper in where there was an openin and held it there.

  • Dale Sr. was not dirty. he only recked someone on purpose 1 time. I drive jus lik him at the tracks i drive at. He belave in stickin his front bumper in where there was an openin and held it there. And Park had a bad head ingery in a race

  • @555MARCUS666 I think with Dale Earnhardt, it's easy to have a skewed opinion because Nascar didn't showcase drivers off the track the way we see it today. Steve Park honestly was never the same after a BIG impact crash took him out of Nascar for due to a severe head injury, also in 2001. It was a Busch Series race where his steering wheel came off his car and lapped car careened him. It was during a caution I think or he might not be alive today. But like I said, never quite the same.

  • @555MARCUS666 retired in 2002 i think

  • @nascar08freak park got released from dei in 03, and drove for rcr for the rest of the season. he was released (i think) from them, and went to the truck in 05. he then drove the camping world (now k&n pro series) and then he raced daytona in cup this year. he raced a truck race or 2 this year, and there are more plans for him in the 36 car this year

  • Its weird, look how close Sr. was getting into this wreck. Odd to think that had he gotten involved he could be alive today.

  • i always get tears in my eyes watching this race

  • Its weird how Dale Earnhardt Sr made it through this wreck but died it one little bumb=(

  • @Halo2sleker Not to mention ironic, too.

  • Comment removed

  • Can you imagine landing and taking off at the airport, and seeing Tony Stewart at a higher altitude than you are.

  • mark martens car looks like a smart car after that

  • 9:07 listen closely on Bill's radio for, "Shit, we're in this."

  • @MortifiedPenguin275 Yeah, I heard it. And yet, he got through unscathed.

  • if only Dale was involved in taht one, for he would possibly be still racing today, RIP Dale 1951-2001

  • too bad Dale didn't get caught in the big wreck and so he would've been out of the race :(

  • @BlueLightning48 But what if he got clipped and hit the wall headon? e_e

  • aside from the Dale Earnhardt thing, 2001 was my favourite season of NASCAr i've watched, i was born in 1996 so i haven't seen NASCAR that much.

  • I remember seeing this wreck and thinking Tony Stewart coulda died looking at the way he flew around....after seeing that I didn't think much about what happened on the final lap, but we all know what happened there.

  • At 2:20 is that an airport

  • @bigwill619

    Daytona Beach International Airport.

  • first memory of a Nascar race. Nearly 10 yrs strong a hardcore Nascar fan

  • I'm not trying to be mean, but if Dale Earnhardt was involved in the big one, he wouldn't of died.

  • LOL at 9:13 Bill Elliott's spotter " shit!!! we're in this"

  • What if.... Dale Sr. did NOT escape the crash and he was involved in it. He would be with us today and retired maybe a 8 or 9 time champion. Something to think about.

  • Its so wierd how Stewart flipped so many times and yet there was, technically a small amount of damage,at least, for what happened to him. wierd!

  • @noonecfcf it's God's Grace

  • marlin(40) bumped into sr.(3) and sr. slid into rusty wallace(2) and thats what made him go up into the wall wich killed him i was there and asked my dad if sr. was okay, and we were listening to the announcements... and they said he was legally dead and i started to cry we are the only ones in the world (possibly) with that whole race on tape. and now with my 72 AMP ENERGY cans i am a proud dale jr.(88) fan

  • 9:13

  • who knows if this big one never even happened dale sr would be still alive

  • @NASCARWWEclubpenguin YOUR RIGHT! WE NEED TO KILL ROBBY GORDON!

  • little did larry mac no that these cars are shit for safety

  • Who was driving that yellow car that made an amazing escape through the wreck at 8:44? Was it Schrader?

  • @ShotgunDolphin

Starting at 8:40, there's a brighter colored car near the wall behind the wreck that somehow makes it through with cars rolling in front of him and alongside him.

He spikes the brakes hard to miss the car flipping in front of him, then turns hard to the wall to miss the cars slamming into eachother on his left side, then brakes again to miss the car slamming the wall in front of him and finally guns it to make it out without a scratch. Really amazing driving.

  • @ShotgunDolphin That was Schrader. Bright yellow 38 mnm's car. Simply amazing.
