I remember laying on the carpet of my bedroom tears streaming down my cheeks and this song had a calming beauty for me. Yet 15 years later I find that same soothing feeling when I hear it once more
'If you listen to the song “Asleep,” and you think about those pretty weather days that make you remember things, and you think about the prettiest eyes you’ve known, and you cry, and the person holds you back, then I think you will see the photograph.'
I think this song affects me more than any other, it accompanies a very difficult period of my life and at the time i felt more than anything that i just wanted to go to sleep and never wake up.
@colourfulkarolina I have. In my opinion it wasn't good. I personally think that this song has more meaning in its self than the book did, so i get annoyed when on all the videos for this song all the comments are about the book or Charlie rather than about the music or the band. But I'm not trying to be rude I'm just stating what i think
@PitbeastA Fair enough. I just thought you were one of those really ignorant fools that made horrible comments about things they haven't tried yet, but since you did then that's your opinion and people should respect you for it.
@PitbeastA Thank you! I could not agree with you more. The song deserves to have comments on the song itself (or at least the band) instead of some overrated book.
@PitbeastA the book isn't dumb. you should be happy The Smiths are getting more fans before of your so-called "dumb" book. I loved the book, you should read it and I bet you'll have your opinion changed.
'If you listen to the song “Asleep,” and you think about those pretty weather days that make you remember things, and you think about the prettiest eyes you’ve known, and you cry, and the person holds you back, then I think you will see the photograph.'
I don't care about whatever controversy this may cause, but I heard Emily Browning's cover of this. I felt like I needed to find the original artist's version. This is really good honestly. I prefer her version, but this is the inspiration so I must give it credit. If you haven't already done it, go watch Sucker Punch!!!
Oh my. I get on here because I want to know what this song sounds like because I read about it in Perks of Being a Wallflower and here I see everybody talking about it. The song it beautiful! I should probably be thankful to SHepen Chbosky for that. I'm also going to try to read a few books Charlie talks about in the book!
I've sung this to my daughter from the first day she came home from hospital - it her lullaby - she's now 7 and singers it perfectly with me. I alternated with The Chauffeur (Duran Duran) & MLK (U2); but they fell early and left the imperious Morrisey as our favorite....What Book?
@TheScoreygoalgoal So why do people keep quoting it? Comment on the song, not on a book that has NOTHING to do with the music, the lyrics, or anything to do with the song.
People complain about no one having good taste in music anymore, and then when someone is introduced to good music, people complain about the way they were introduced to said music. Will people never be pleased. I guess that is just human nature.
~ I found this song by seeing it on one of my friends walls on Facebook. Yeah, it sounds petty. But since then I've been listening to nothing but the Smiths ever since, and I can honestly say. I'm hooked baby. -_-
@8scatterbrain8 don't, please don't. talk to someone, and if you feel like you don't have anyone i swear to god i will answer back if you want to talk or rant. it's not the answer, i promise. i know what it feels like. stay strong, xo
Good god people quit freaking about people saying they got here because of the book. The more people that know of this song and band the better, why does it matter how it happened?
I'm glad humans have birthdays. if it weren't my birthday, I would never meet charlie. I would never meet the smiths. and I would never feel this awesome feeling, in all honesty, of being infinite. I feel so human. but infinite.
@IThinkMyNamesTooLong Yeah well said, because we all know Looking for Alaska is an all around better book with exactly the same concept except for the fact that the main character isnt two years old with absolutely zero concept on what life should be.
I don't understand why everyone is so upset. Honestly, does the fact that someone found this song because of a book make them any lesser of a person? As if you were all the very first to ever hear a smiths song... You had to have heard it somewhere before too, or had someone tell you about it right? It's not like you were born with a full knowledge of the smiths and their entire works. The important thing is that we found it to begin with. So, please, get over yourselves.

@hesawallflower U literally took the words right out of my mouth... That's exactly what I tell people when they get offended because someone heard about a song on a show, a movie, or a book.. N I'm like "Well you have to have heard it somewhere it's not like you were born knowing the song or the singer." Some people can just be so CLOSED MINDED sometimes.
@hesawallflower Yes but people that found the song throught listening to the band tend not to tell the motherfucking world about where they found the song, why they like the song, and when they heard the song!
I, I miss you, José. Sing me to sleep, I don't want to wake up again and discover that you're not there. My life's ruined right now, at least make me sleep, there's no other way to relieve me from the pain.
I read this book three years ago, and it has like this place in my heart that cant be replaced by anything. its has helped me get through so much, just knowing im not the only one. i love this. <3
I was searching for some Smiths videos and i found this beautiful song. I read the comments here and then i discovered the Perks. I listen to it over and over again! Thanks youtube and thank you Charlie!
I think perhaps it doesn't matter whether you ended up here because you read about the song in a book, or you heard it on the radio, or your brother told you about it, or you caught a few lines from a car driving past with it's windows down. I think what matters is that you ended up here at all.
@scalperjack1 Dude quit bashing on people. People are entitled to their own opinion. I personally love the book, and have never read anything that has made me feel that way, but if you don't, you don't have to insult the book, or the people who like the book.
