I always thought, Lou was Arnolds number 1 competitor to watch out for. Lou was an excellent challenge for Arnie. BUT, Arnold had something that I noticed a lot in the competitions he was in, Arnold had a very, very dispoportioned waist line. His skinny waist added the illusion of extra bulk and shape to Arnolds upper body... the man was damn near perfectly proportioned (his legs were a little under-develeped IMO).

Lou was much more massive than arnold and far stronger---(he came second in the world's strongest man contest). Ferrigno (offseason) outweighed Arnold by over 80 pounds. Arnold won as he always did by his superior symmetry and completeness of development. His only weakness was his his legs which were somewhat lean by Mr. Olympia standards.

Lou should have beat Arnold the last time Arnold competed for Mr. Olympia. The judges clearly gave Arnold the advantage being the 7 time Mr. Olympia in a row. Lou Ferrigno was chosen to be the incredible Hulk because he was bigger, stronger, and more well rounded and sculpted than Arnold. Lou Ferrigno is one of my favorite bodybuilders of all time and will forever be remembered as the man who got screwed by Arnolds fame.

Lou was bigger, Arnold was better. Arnold did have the benefit of living in California and Joe Weider taking him under his wing. Lou lived in NY, away from the mecca of bodybuilding, and under too much influence of his father. His hearing handicap probably detrimental his career also.

Strange how small Lou looked in some of his pre and post "Pumping Iron" photos. In the videos, he looks gigantic, but the pics outside the movie, he just looks bad. Way too many lagging points. Arnold was the best because he did two major things differently: 1. he always brought up his own physique weak spots into equality with his strong points. 2. he mentally was tougher than everyone else. Lou was good, but didn't have the mental toughness then. Nor did he have the balance Arnold had.

Lou looks better in some pictures, but at the 1975 Olympia he was not as good as Arnold. Proportionally smaller and his conditioning was nowhere near Arnold's or Serge Nubret's. Arnold said himself though that if he had Lou's genetics he would have been five times the bodybuilder that he was.
