  • The best war plane ever...

  • love the sound of the merlin engine

  • Comment removed

  • She's looking beautiful! Hopefully we'll see her at Duxford Flying Legends in 2012!

  • History channel had a show on about the Luftwaffe. They would train anti-aircraft targeting on captured aircraft like Lancasters, Mustangs, etc. An ex-Luftwaffe pilot stated the Mustang was the greatest plane he ever flew...

  • Awesome! My late father was an Eight Air Force P51 crew chief during WWII and he would have loved this video. A truly magnificent aircraft.

  • @geopapas1 Nice to hear that! It is the Queen of the skies! Have a nice day!

  • nice color

  • @The7Magier Thanks!!!

  • I thought I might stir up the "whistling death" debate a bit. You've all heard the questions and opinions about what causes the Mustang to whistle on a high speed pass. So, what does everyone think? I noticed that the whistle is apparently absent from this particular Mustang. So is it the gun ports, the supercharger or the radiator ducts on the bottom of the fuselage? Personally I think the supercharger is out because otherwise every Mustang would whistle on every pass, would it not?

  • @brettt777 I love P-51!

  • @brettt777 I'm wondering the same thing. I also thought it was the supercharger that made that sound. Could it be that some of the newer Mustangs doesn’t have the supercharger. I mean, do all restored Mustangs have the RR Merlin with supercharger? Or do they take the SC out to save the engine.

  • @hermodpeter Well, I haven't had the pleasure of getting hands on with alot of Mustangs but the few that I have seen are all P-51D's and have the Packard built Merlin and they all have the supercharger. That's why I tend to believe the whistle is from the cooling ducts on the bottom of the fuselage. SOmetimes the whistle isn't there. Well, sometimes the ducts may not be open all the way or whatever. But the supercharger is always on although I believe it can change speeds...?

  • @brettt777 I live in Sweden, and in the early 90s I attended the Aviation college of Sweden in Västerås . Located near the school was Västerås flying museum. And they had at that time an P-51D callsign “Gul-Kalle” “Yellow-Kilo” . This one never made that whistling sound. I don’t remember it this one did or didn’t have a SC. It did however have an original RR Merlin. A couple of years later then I did my military service at the F-4 Wing at Frösön near Östersund 94-95.

  • @hermodpeter At one time we had a couple of visitors from Norway. An A-26, Dc3 and a P-51D named “Old Crow”. This one did have that sound every time it flew. At one time the pilot did one hell of a low pass a couple of meter from our heads. Damn, it whistled a lot.. Very nice I might add.

  • @hermodpeter Also, there are other planes that make a similar noise like the F-4U Corsair. It obviously doesn't have the same engine or supercharger, but it does have radiator cooling ducts at the wing roots. As for the gun port theory, I suppose that's plausible but I have seen reports from actual P-51 pilots that say they have flown planes with the gun ports covered over and they still hear the whistle. So, IMO the noise comes from the cooling ducts. But hey, what do I know?

  • @brettt777By the sound of it, more than me. :-) I think you got a point there. In normal aerodynamics protruding antennas or flaps or panels can create vortexes and can produce some kind of whistling sounds. And you got some point there with the cooling ducts. Do the pilot set the ducts himself or is it automatic in some way. Could it be a coincidence that some make the “noise” and some don’t?

  • @hermodpeter Seems like if you fly the plane, you would get the same setting at some point on these cooling ducts and hence the same sound.

  • @hermodpeter I "think" the ducts on the Mustang are manualy controlled although I don't know for sure. There are some planes that have them controlled automatically. Either way, I would think the ducts would have to be adjusted on occasion depending on engine speed and load, altitude, etc. But again, I am no Mustang expert. As for the supercharger, I have never heard of a Merlin in a Mustang without one. I wouldn't think a front line fighter would be without one...

  • @hermodpeter But maybe some guys have removed them, as you said, to help the engine live longer. I would think that would be a problem at altitude though. If memory serves, I read somewhere that the first Mustangs that used the Alison engines weren't real good at altitude because they only had a single speed charger, where the Merlins have a dual speed unit

  • @brettt777 Precisely, the Allison engine was way underpowered. I think it only flew well if it stayed below 3000 meter or something like that. But what a plane it became the in received the RR Merlin. Some airworthy Messerschmitts share the whistle sound like the G model. I never heard it in person though, only in movie clips. I really would like to know for sure. Anybody who knows an old Mustang driver?

  • I'll take a super jug.P-48 Thank You

  • @JensCM54 Welcome

  • Love the stroboscopic effect of the propellor turning around in direction when the pilot throttles up and down.

  • @SprecheDeutsch Yeah, it is really cool!

  • @AgentMorris94 Thank you very much for watching!

  • A wonderful video of a nicely restored P-51 in a great setting. One of the best run-up segments I have seen and heard. But the best for me was to actually fly in three of these, and get stick time. The vibration and thunderous roar of that Merlin, even from inside the cockpit with a headset on, is magnificent and awesome, almost beyond words. Not ashamed to say I had tears in my eyes after each of my three flights.

  • @fbenenati Thank you very much for watching! I would love to fly once in such a plane... WOW! I can understand your emotions! That must have been a great experience to sit inside!

  • It's pretty loud, the beautiful sound of paradise. P-51 is my favourite machine. This enginecheck is breathtaking... Thank you....
