The thing is -THEY WERE and ARE the best PUNK/New Wave/Rock band ever! I was fortunate enough to see them in the early 80s and met them and did an interview published in local paper
So lovely to see the late great George Melly present this documentary on The Stranglers, who in my not very humble opinion were one of the greatest British bands of all time - musically and lyrically. The Stranglers lyrics were far in advance of any punk band of the time, full of fascinating obscure slang and poetic turns of phrase and even references to Japanese martial arts and literature. The Stranglers with Hugh Cornwell were fantastic and still inspire me after all these years.
strange little girl was at their peak -- all albums (except no more heroes which is a bit primitve to me) from 77 to 82 are phantastic, then came the weak "feline", but aural sculpture and dreamtime were beautiful albums and genuine stranglers -- 10 was no stranglers album to me anymore -- but until then they were just phenomenal!
@TheNaomiengland i guess you saw these pictures of the guitar player - typical thin man fat willie, no body hair, dense black pubic bush -- the bass player was seen in the bath tub toying with a girl, if we saw the same book xD
I believe the critic was Jon Savage. The bitter little creep completely omitted the Stranglers from BBC programme on punk a few years back. The email site was completely bombarded by complaints about the matter. I mean, the Slits had a feature and they missed these guys out. Its scandalous. Talk about trying to rewrite history.
@johnanthonyp that makes sense....i remember the punk episode of sounds of the 70s when stranglers were shown on it, then few years later when repeated they had been wiped out completely from the episode i had watched
@jonblazeinc Well, thank you jon. I will champion these unsung heroes til the day I die. Without these guys there would have been no Joy Division or New Order for the priviiged middle classes to fawn over. That bass sound was hugely copied by lesser artists. They were massively influential albeit uncredited.
Some guy i know told me that years ago he was paid to evict some squatters from a house in a nearby village who happened to be a rock group, when they got into the house they found mattresses and needles. He also said thank god they weren't in because one of them was a karate expert, i wonder who that group were? ;O). I'm from Godalming by the way.
