WOW!! Was that Patina Renea Miller singing the lead in White Boys?? Bloody amazing in every single way!! Once a musical is this old, and the soundtrack album with Ms Nell Carter singing this is so engrained in your head, it's nearly impossible for someone to surpass it. But someone has! I couldn't believe my ears!! Ms Miller has made this her own song. And what a voice!!!
I once saw Nell Carter in Aint Misbehavin'. That should be Patina's next show!!
Yeah, but that was reorchestrated and changed to showcase those actresses' voices since it was a concert. Don't get me wrong, they're fantastic, but this is going back to how the songs were orginally written and presented.
Yeah, although it wasn't changed THAT much. There was some harmonies added at the top and before the key change, but the song kept the same structure. They keys are even the same. Those concert girls just sang all over it. Really the girls here are sort of doing the same thing. There's the main melody they're singing and riffing all over. I just prefer the concert version. it's high time the show is reorchestrated. To me the orig. sounds antiquated.
Well, the original orchestrations are from '67/'68 so it totally makes sense they're somewhat dated. That being said, I personally love the revival's orchestrations, which have been changed somewhat from the originals, although not drastically. Having the show still set in '67, I just feel like the orchestrations are appropriate. Have you heard the cast recordings of the more recent European productions? There's some crazy orchestrations in those.
I think "updating" the orchestrations defeats the point of a show specifically written to present the viewpoint of the counter-culture movement of the 60s. It is inexorably tied to that period, and full of *very* specific references (lyrical, cultural, and musical) to the late 1960s. What makes it an enduring piece of art is that in so specifically examining that viewpoint, "Hair" becomes timeless by addresses universal themes of self-expression, belonging, and rebellion against authority.
That's just how the songs were written in the original production of Hair. The two backup singers in "White Boys" actually have more of a part than you can hear in this video, though, their mics weren't really turned up.
Okay, the middle singer with red curly hair during the musical really seems like she feels the message as a character. Her face almost cries during the ending song I LOVE THAT. It transmits the seriousness of the message. And PATINA tore it up last night Tuesday, I want to go again tonight because she is amazing. Also Allison Case is my personal hero because her Frank Mills makes me cry its so good!
Patina Miller definitely made white boys sound more delicious than black boys. That sister can siiiiiing!! :D

Ok this is pretty good, but nothing tops the Concert version recording that was a couple of years ago. I still haven't found anything to top that.

Hm. Why were there three soloists for "Black Boys" and only one soloist for "White Boys?" That was odd.
And it was odd to hear the "Black Boys" girls singing higher than the "White Boys" girls.

ok the first black singer is AMAHZING!! I'm really obsessed with the second, 'white boys are so pre-heeee-iiity...'
